I don't get the same sense of pain that is in Croce's version. I was hoping to hear it sung by someone with a better voice than his, but this isn't it.

This album blew me away.  It just goes to show what great arranging and orchestration can do.  Diana (or whoever wrote the arrangements - don't want to slight anyone) brings these songs to life as never before.  Most of these songs were written in the 70s and much of the substance at that time was overpowered by loud percussion, driving guitars or screaming vocalists.  She has removed the "noise" and allowed the elegance of the chord progressions and lyrics to shine through.  The piano embellishments are more from an "accompanist" standpoint, and allow for the emotion of the vocals to rise to the forefront.  I could have never imagined how fantastic some of these songs were in their original format until she "peeled away" the layers that obscured their hidden treasures and allowed us to appreciate them so much more completely.  Anyone who is not moved by listening to this album, well, "how insensitive" they are.

Great to see someone of Diana Krall's talent and prominence covering a Jim Croce song. Hope she can get behind the "Induct Croce in the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame' movement. Like to see more well-known singers covering Jim's music.
