Kool & The Gang - Fruitman Lyrics
Here comes the fruitman,
Bringing fruit from the land
Here come the fruitman,
Bringing vegetables from the land
The Fruitman always asks you
What can I, I do for you
I have watermelons, red ripe tomatoes
Apples and oranges, Idaho potatoes
So look and see what you see
I only bring things naturally
You know you gotta eat to live
So your body can give you more to give
So eat naturally, and you will see the difference
Here comes the fruitman,
Bringing fruit from the land
Here come the fruitman,
Bringing vegetables from the land
When you see the fruit truck come through
The Fruitman always asks you
What can I, I do for you
I have watermelons, red ripe tomatoes
Apples and oranges, Idaho potatoes
So look and see what you see
I only bring things naturally
You know you gotta eat to live
So your body can give you more to give
So eat naturally, and you will see the difference
Here comes the fruitman,
Bringing fruit from the land
Here come the fruitman,
Bringing vegetables from the land
So look and see what you see
I only bring things naturally
You know you gotta eat to live
So your body can give you more to give
So eat naturally, and you will see the difference

Kool & The Gang brought me here. Dilla came into the picture later on.
There is a Saturday morning cartoon break I've been searching for but can't find with this song playing of a little black fruit man riding around in a truck with fruits on the back. Do anyone know where I can find it, please. It use to come on right before or after a Fat Albert cartoon.
It's a work of genius. The soundtrack to our lives. Love it.
Word! tmat2018. Well said
The school of J Dilla in the building

Fruit Man - F.O.I
Yes Sir!!!
Yes!!!!!!
From the LP Light of worlds in my opinion their greatest LP.
I agree completely. Loved the samba rhythms of "Whiting H & G", the funk of "Higher Plane" and "Rhyme Time People", and of course the warm weather classic, the iconic "Summer Madness".
Agree 💯
I concur.
Their best album in spite of the commercial success they would attain over the following decades.
Like the rest of yall, the awesome J Dilla brought me here.
Thomas Canolio Nope! Part of my childhood...JD, though dope in his own right....this is the classic!
WOW! There's more talk about Dilla than Kool and the Gang in here! Dilla is dope, but give it a rest! On a lighter side, this song is as refreshing as that first drink of water after waking up in the morning. God is great!
"So, You gotta to eat to live (great book by Elijah Muhammad) so you can give more to give...."
-It just hit me how dope the message in this song is. I Iove it more now.
Marc P this message is totally dope...TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY❤️
This song is for the vegetarian and vegan people who live in the ghettos of America. I think this was to promote Black farmers to sell directly into urban areas that were and are called "food deserts".
You ever seen the Wire? Baltimore still has fruitmen, men with carts who bring produce into the inner city. Used to be a regular thing in a lot of urban areas, before zoning and permits forced many of them into abject homelessness.
I think Rick West lived next to PS 17 School, Jersey City...
From Jersey City..remember the fruit man com in' to the neighborhood
J Dilla know he made another classic comeback on this one
i bought the 45 kool and the gang their first single and consequently bought everything they did until the 80 s I met them once at manny's on 48th st in manhattan buying equipment for the band and was blown as a kid to see them in the flesh although they weren't too interested in talking to a kid back then but light of the worlds was clearly greatness
Pls set this to be available to play on mobile! I can't get it! Thanx
Thanks for that... Man, I used to blast this tune on my stereo!
Damm Real Soul Back In The Day!!!
thanks for the posting!
J Dilla did his thang on friutman...

@Terri Jones All praises due to Allah Sister 🌟
My dad was a D.J. back in the day's so, I heard this song for the first time when I was about 6 years old and it stuck with me ... I'm 42 now. Ain't nothing like the old school
My Brother hip me to this LP back in 1974 and I have my copy till today and its one of my favorites with sides like "Rhyme Time People" "Higher Planes" the whole LP is dope and it has a positive message. Thanks Kool and the Gang for sharing your music with us.
The verse and chorus have a Randy Newman feel. Love this and Dilla's usage of it.
The song is nothing but about food but is GREAT!!
"Light of World" was one of my dad's favorite albums, in which I grew up listening to. This song gave some spiritual overtone to the album promoting healthy eating. This song is way ahead of its time.
the diff'reeence, the diff'reeence, the diff'reeence
DILLA IS THE GREATEST! MAKES YOU ENJOY THE ORIGINAL EVEN MORE!!!
Born late,sorry !
@Odawg96 I bought this LP as a 10th-grader in Philadelphia; "Fruitman" wasn't the party song on the album (Street Corner Symphony, Rhyme Tyme People, Higher Plane were), but if you had the album, you would dig deeper into it and every song was worth listening to. Remember, it was the fall of 1974 and everything you can recall since that time hadn't happened yet so it was the very latest thing. The anticipation of Kool & The Gang's fans waiting for this LP was remarkable at the time.
One of the greatest Bands next 2,EWF... I 'M 66 still have the,Lp
R.I.P. To Ricky West. He was a great talent for Kool & The Gang.
@LamontCJ J Dilla (R.I.P.) always picked great songs to sample from. His beats are classic.
This song brings back memories of being a teenager in San Diego, CA. Bell bottoms, tricked out vans, sunshine, pretty girls and Columbian Gold weed.
@BLINGINLIKE3PO It's pretty much looped man don't kid yourself.
Looping is ok. I don't see anything wrong with it to me it's like remixing. We all know Dilla had serious skills but c'mon he would even admit he just looped this shit and filtered it a bit.
interesting how we probably will not be able to sample ANYthing from today's music (quite simply, because today's music isn't sample-worthy).
We'd have to keep going back to the '60s, '70s and '80s to sample music.
U AND U WILL C THE DIFFERENCE...THINKIN BOUT SPRING & SUMMERS IN PHI & CMD WHEN FRUITMAN AND FISH TRUCKS WOULD SWING THRU AND OUR PARENTS WOULD OUT THERE, OR WOULD SEND US TO BUY UP HIS WHOLE TRUCK B4 THE NEIGHBROS GET THERE!!
Simply beautiful
probly Justin Bieber who clicked dislike
that one "Dislike" was probably born after 1990 something...
Thank you, Kool and the Gang. Same to you, Dilla.
@Sk8boixo why?
The diff'erence!
i love this. would you also post "HG Whiting"?
everytime i want to go back to the days of riding the big wheel in the basement; this cut does it. third grade 1974-75.
I use to listen to this over and over as a child. My dad have the 45. I bought Dilla's Donuts the day that came out and when I heard this...well it was curtains.
This song takes me back to third grade, riding my big wheel in the basement.
While I've always figured that this album was definitely filled NOI messages, I never have felt the impact of this particular song. I guess it's one of those "You had to be there" types of things. I was born in '74, so in this case, I've completely missed the context of the song. To me, this always sounded like something that would've been in a SESAME STREET clip from back in the day. Not tryin' to dis the song. It's cool, but I guess I would have to have been there.
How To Eat To Live
Eat rite
Do rite
Eat to live Mumz alwayz telin me to EAT GREEN veggiez ..peace
lol, you're an ignoramus.
dont be stupid
That my friend, is what made the legend of J-Dilla. The master of perception vs. deception...
DILLA LIVES!
ya'll are getting mad defensive, but he did just loop a couple parts. it's hardly "chopped to bits." he was still the man. but don't like his balls just b/c he's dead.
just listening to dilla will get u into this great classic music
I didn't mean to insult Dilla..I was just trying to explain his style. I'm not sure if he looped or chopped up stuff. either way, he was dope doin' what he did, and I love this song and the way Dilla used it. No disrespect intended...
James Yancy, aka Jay Dee or J Dilla did sampole this on the song "The Difference", from his album "Donuts". Basically, he just looped the bassline and the chorus "you'll see the difference".
Either way, I like it and I'm glad I got both this album from Kool & the Gang and J Dilla's Donuts...good music always last forever!!!
The fruit of Cocaine and Heroin was spoiled to the point where it caused death and incarceration to so so man BLACK MEN. Can you imagine if we...few men here commenting about this song....revitalized the song...brought the song back.......YOU WILL SEE THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE FRUIT MAN/......RIP honorable ELIJAH MUHAMMAD
I am sitting here thinking of this song and the power that it had over us young men back in the hood. It made us question something within us as far as what we were being fed. Not only what the food we ate, but also the spiritula food that we were being fed. This thought process was especially important when you consider that the fruit in a lot of big cites that was being consumed was drug.
I am a christian. But growin up in the hood of North Jersey, we went to Nation of Islam events. This song was played at a Savoiurs day in Paterson, NJ. It brings back the daysof the Shabazz steak and take...Fish sandwiches and Bean Pies....... I looked for this song for over 30 Years... Thanks for posting it. The words Never left my mind
Rick Rest the Keyboard player sings lead on this tune....i pulled an ex-girlfriend with this tune 20 years ago in my bedroom....Watermelons, Red ripe tomatoes, Apples & Oranges...Idaho Potatoes!! This guy is DOPE!!!
