yes cordite in the air? gunpowder smell? did he shoot her when she threatened to leave? did she have an affair??? mysterious song to say the least. kinda of sad, sad, presence to it. cordite , ringing sound in the air, smoke goes up the stairs. his heart beats loud in his ears???? sounds like the guy got caught up in a cheating woman and got burned and took matters in his own hands.....just my opinion.

I believe it's called a "mute" a device that fits into the bell of the trumpet (by hand) that dampens the sound and "mutes" it and softens the tone...

Kinda like booze & a pistol helps in the worst moments. Don't get me wrong - I think this is an awesome song, but it does nothing to inspire hope - it's more of a reinforcement of depression when one's heart is broken beyond repair when the love of your life has left (for good).

@Marty Howe In my opinion, as when you are happy and hear happy songs, just to confort yourself, you hear sad songs when you are sad or blue. For me it helps, just makes you touch the bottom and grow better!.
