Knopfler, Mark - Sultans Of Swing Lyrics
You get a shiver in the dark
It's been raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Thank you goodnight now it's time to go home'
and he makes it fast with one more thing
'We are the Sultans of Swing'

Knopfler, Mark Sultans Of Swing Comments
at a latchkey kid back in the 80's I grew up on MTV and Dire Straights.
El Más Grande!!! Respeto Absoluto Maestro....🙏🏻
As a guitarist I watched my dad play guitar and was inspired. But there was always this one song he played. Later on as I was more experienced in guitar I could not explain it to him what that song was that made me wanna play, when I was 22 I heard this song on the radio and it was it! Crazy how a instrument can inspire someone and have that one distinct riff that connected them to the instrument of choice. Music is special.
Mark has real wicked quitar skills...
I don't like them.
I love them.
One of the most influential guitarist and musician as a whole. And on top of it all he's such a down to earth man. Mark is a great example.
Thank you for the amazing iconic music you have given us sir. This song is like the punch card, a key that unlocks some of the most precious memories for me.
This is what music should be!💪
One of the greatest music of all times! Its Just surreal! Mark knopfler is like a good old wine, Just get better with age!
Sounded like he was mixing a touch of Monlight Shadow with Sultans of Swing if you listen carefully.
A MELODY MASTER !....////
We are so fortunate to have empathetic songwriters.
What said his wife? 🤔 i cant understand it.
Excuse me . Im not an native speaker 🤣
She asked if he played the twiddling guitar part at the end
The part right at 3:31
Yes keep playin the Twidly bits!!!!!!!!
Mark is the best
Mark is a god!!!
It's a helluva gift we get for just listening.
Thank you
“They’re landmarks... they’re milestones in their lives” They are time capsules opening in the mind.
The blue suit and red Strat just... wow... classy!
Le meilleur guitariste au monde
Hey mark you stil have the same fender
Magical!
Mark never played the solo as how it was written, not even once, just improvisations. He's really good but can't say he's a guitar God without hearing him play like the original. Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, they all play their songs just pinpoint straight as how it was written, with little to no improvisations.
Can you imagine what he could do with " The Star Spangled Banner" ?
Another pig just went flying by !
Máximo respeito 👌
Love to just sit around and bullshit with this dude..
Esse cara toca né mesmo galera?
Prince will kick ass anytime on the guitar
Of course it is nice to have an evening with Mark, when he opens up and tell some tales about his career, his life and his songs - it is fun and interresting....but I prefer him playing the whole song, in general.
True, but there's plenty of videos of that. This is a nice change of pace. I've got a lot of time for anything Mark has to say.
The best guitar player ever!!
The best!!!
Mark knopfler .
We used to get naked to this song in the army.... SQUADRON!!!!
Thank you. Fresh Rose's! What a sweet smell!

This is the first song I remember hearing as a child. Must've been about 4 years old, it always stuck with me, especially the outro. Amazing song.

Got myself a vinyl player, my dad helped me set it up. And the first thing I played was Sultans of Swing
Mark Knopfler is just a god period
Milestones. So correct . i can remember where i was the first time i heard this.
What I would give to be able to play like that
This comment always cracks me up?
Why can YOU NOT play like that?
Did you even take lessons? and do you have any idea how many musicians DO play like that and are starving?
mickavellian so elderly
1:57 😍
a big fan of dire strait ,
Mark deserves credit as a shred guitarist and be up there with hendrix and slash cause he definitely innovates on the guitar
That one of those giving teast to life
too much talking👎... Just play the song damn
Spot on mark
What a performer and all round good guy and what a song
Lionel Messi lovitura libera:)
Let your fingers do the talking yellow pages
Grande! Bellissima canzone!
Mark Knopfler is for that guys that insist to say that there is a "right way" to play the guittar. Right way is for newbies. "Make it rock", is the only thing that matters for the Sultans of Swing.
they still let George hang around
@neal kelly Sure!!!
He was born to do it
This reminds me of comedy for drummers by Fred Armisen. One day, I'll learn guitar, but you guys can't keep time. ;-)
Absolute legend
"Old songs are landmarks for people and they use them..they use them to live with" Mark knopfler
what a soul 💜🙏
If old songs are landmarks Sultans is the Rocky Mountains (or insert your favorite massive landmark).

Peep the head shake at 3:19
My idol guiterist
Just look at his tone!!!!
Incredible, sweet tone!
I was 13 when my life in music permanently changed. From mainstream pop, I was introduced to this song with a crazy simple rhythm section and a crazy complex yet simple solo that would ring in my head for the next 25 years everytime I would look for inspiration in music, and inspiration later on in writing music.
That song is Sultans of Swing. It is a landmark of a song in my life because it was the song that laid the foundation for my journey into music production and the genre of heavy metal.
I absolutely love that song. And I'm sure people who hear it for the first time all these years later do as well.
Ive been watching the Live Aid concerts 1985,Absolutely EPIC!!! Bowie Heroes OMG!! U2 BAD and blooody sunday,Dire Straits,ERIC Clapton White Room JFK!!! truly amazing
hate the wooden lot in front rows, if you'd hit me with sultans I'd be up regardles
Wow....
Mark! you need a podcast! about whatever you want it to be!
Didn't know guitar can make me sit in one place
Thanks for helping fill our needs over the years...
Every time I have moved and found a new place to live, the first song I always play is "Sultans of swing". It's not really a home before. It's just as amazing as the first time I heard it in 1978 :)
I could listen to this guy all day long.
