Knopfler, Mark - Silver Eagle Lyrics

It was so late and she’d be sleeping
He came through her home town
With the moonlight on the crossroads
And the green light shining down
And the bell at the railroad crossing
And the horn from far away
And his Silver Eagle passing
Half a mile from where she lay

At his feet a sea of faces
Make devotions with their love
Clap their hands and plead their cases
Call for blessings from above
Like the rolling waves forever massing
To crash and foam and creep away
And the Silver Eagle passing
Half a mile from where she lay

Road signs flow into the headlights
Whisper names and fall behind
He finds some honor in the darkness
Hopes for grace and peace of mind
And he thinks of how they’d lay together
He’d run his fingers through her hair
And he wonders if she’ll ever
Come to know that he was there

How can you ever pick your favourite ? each one becomes your favourite as you hear it. This one comes close though.

This song is actually about the great days of the 1950's era streamliner passenger trains here in America and how big corporate railroad companies killed the passenger train, and now Richard Anderson is trying to do the same thing at Amtrak. This is a song about days gone by.

Such a beautiful song, Mark's reflective voice as he muses on the present journey and the woman in the past. Words that bring images to mind and the loneliness of the night. The melancholy and the beauty in the evocative lyrics... he is just magic.

i'd like to hear Bruce Springsteen's version of this song one day.. it would be really interesting.

I'd rather not hear Springsteen defile anything Mark Knopfler has created.

Yes, he already destroyed Jersey girl.

The song is written inspired by his tour with Bob Dylan, where he used to ride the big Eagle tour buss . "clap their hands" etc. speaks of the shows . that's pretty much it.

  24. V.... L....
