I just don't get it! I know i'm going to be unpopular for saying this, but I get the feeling The Knife are trying too hard to be arty with their new stuff. I question whether their latest album Shaking the Habitual really comes from the depths the heart or some desire to make a fancy modern art statement. Did they make that album for their people, for themselves, or the critics? I really believe that the greatest music, whether it's simple, complex or experimental, aims to be beautiful and/or naturally appealing in some way rather than just high art.

@ArchibaldClumpy I agree that some of the finest music can be the stuff that grows on you after a few listens, but if you force yourself to like it then are you being true to what your soul desires or just turning your perception upside-down?

@Thomes Maisling I think what you describe is the difference—whether it "grows on you" after a few listens, or if even after giving it a fighting chance you're still kind of pushing yourself to listen and consider it. :) Some of my favorite albums had no effect on me the first time around. Others never gave me that little hint of something tantalizing after a fair try and I eventually decided they weren't for me, at least at this point in my life.

I loved it from the first listen. I think they're not forcing anything so much expressing something from the part of their creative mind that is less accessible than the other parts of their creativity. As a Merzbow fan though i find this pretty accessible anyway.

i dig it. kind of basic experimental but i'm very glad they are kind of popular...the more people that can open their ears and minds to unfamiliar sounds and recognize that not all music has to be pretty, or even appealing to your ears to be good, the better.

What do you mean by basic experimental? It's an absurdist abstract noisescape, masterfully crafted. I love experimental music and this is right up there with some of the best.

You should listen to this song a few times over. this is an insatiably ground breaking record, and if you're open to music like this you'll respect it for what it actually is if you take some one on one time with the album. don't let the music nerds deter you from actually enjoying the fucking art (you assholes.)

As I listen to this, I imagine myself walking through some big city at the darkest hours of the night, all by myself, with just the skyline above, the glow of all the city's lights to serve as company and this song sounding from God knows where. Then, just in the minute 3:55, all lights of the city suddenly turn off, leaving all in darkness with no other sound more than those strumming chords. And, when the bass kicks in, all the buildings shake and start to crumble untill there is nothing left.
