This album was such a vocal triumph for Gene and Paul and along with the hard hitting metal sound of this album, it’s one of their best ever and still my favourite 80s KISS album by a mile.

Sounds so Creatures of the Night, the atmosphere in some Lick it Up songs is fantastic, dark, sinister, just after Creatures of the night. I love this album, I remember Christmas 1983 playing with Lego and listening to this.

I remember how excited I was waiting for this album to come out. I called the record store and ran down and got it the day it was released. I remember just staring at the album for hours, it was such a trip seeing them without the make-up. It was a good album too, Vinnie Vincent really helped the band and gave them a more heavy metal sound.

Vinnie might not be to everyone's taste as a lead player and I understand that but his songwriting is definitely up there with the best.

Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent fantastic duo from Rock authentic

According to an interview he did with Steve Rosen in1987, Vinnie did 6 takes of the solo and picked his favorite, then left the studio to go home. Gene later that night took parts from the six tracks and edited them together. Vinnie was not pleased and thought it was a joke. He cited this incident as one of the reasons he wanted to leave the band and go solo.

Well it came out fantastic, so Vinnie is a douche.

One of the most complicated relationships in rock: Vinnie Vincent and Kiss. They needed each other, but just never learned how to conduct their business. All of the songs that Vinnie wrote with Kiss are ALL kick ass. By the same token, Kiss put a dog leash on Vinnie so he wouldn't go overboard (think the musical masterbation knows as the VV Invasion). Talent wise they were a perfect match. Business wise they were a complete disaster.

Gene and Paul should have given Vinnie more flexibility. They would have created great music together.

Gene`s voice is badass

The pendulum was definitely swinging the other way with this release; gone were the primary colors of the disco era, gone was that which defined KISS in those glitter days – the makeup – which now seemed to belong to a more innocent era. Made heavier by that 6/4 bar thrown in at the head of each chorus line, then sealed with the ferocious way Simmons attacks the first word: “NOT for the innocent…” And when he sings the last line, “Let the beast run WILD…” I swear he’s turning into a werewolf.

Both Paul and Gene's voices were outstanding on this album but Gene really came into his own big time on Lick It Up. He sang instead of growling a la God Of Thunder, and he really showed his chops as a lead singer on what was pretty much a metal album from a band that isn't considered to be a metal band.

This isn't as much a KISS song, as it's more of a Gene Simmons song. My point being, Gene could sing alot of songs without the makeup on; but he could sing this wearing the makeup & it would still fit him perfectly.

This is such a good song. The whole album really is great. With Vinnie writing songs they did great stuff. After this Gene started to not care and Paul was left to go too far into commercial stuff.

The reason why this album is one of KISS' best non makeup albums is because its really a part 2 of Creatures. KISS went in the studio trying to top Creature and make the same kind of balls out album stripping the makeup. Fell short of Creatures in my opinion but still kick ass rock!

I feel the same way...Lick it Up and Creatures feel like sister records to me.

KISS was back in full gear with this classic from 1983. However, Vinnie Vincent, the brand new replacement for Ace Frehley, stuck out like a sore thumb in whatever the band did, and this prompted a lot of tension between Vincent, Simmons and Stanley; Carr had a neutral disposition. Vincent acted like a jerk, and, had he acted like a true musician, who knows where KISS might have gone with him after this. It's like Frank Zappa said, "Shut up and play your guitar."

There are two versions of the story, Paul and Gene say he tried to take over and Vinnie says he got screwed. The truth is probably a mixture of both, Vinnie wanted an equal cut for pretty much writing both Creatures and Lick It Up and Paul and Gene were most likely saying "No, we run the show."

Just imagine what they could have done together if they had collaborated with each other instead of having ego problems all of them except Carr.

The truth usually resides in the middle. Paul and Genes' biggest stated issue was he wouldn't sign a contract and didn't follow orders. I saw them in Baltimore with Vinnie, his solo went on and on! Great player and writer, apparently had the ARTIST personality! Huge ego and wacky! Additionally, most people don't remember his record label kicking him out of his band and renaming it Slaughter! Guess he rubbed them wrong as well? He lost when he sued KISS, they were smart to pay him and take out taxes without the contract. His Demons and Ego ruined an excellent player!

With all due respect, I partly disagree. Vinnie did not 'stick out like a sore thumb ' on his solos/songs on neither 'Creatures...', the album, nor the Creatures tour, and certainly not on 'Lick It Up' - the album. Now, to be fair, on the Lick It Up tour, apparently it was a different matter altogether...

In terms of getting back to platinum success, saleswises, this was The first album since 1979s Dynasty that went platinum, and got Kiss back to selling in the platinum/multi-platinum range. From what I have read, However, the last platinum album they had was 1989s Hot In The Shade, & even that album stalled at Gold for quite awhile. Any album that they've done since then has been Gold (500,000 copies) or less. Yet, we know that, all in all, Kiss has (somehow) managed to sell over 100,000,000 copies of their music. Gene & Paul must have done at least SOMETHING right!!! Just imagine if Peter Criss & Ace Frehley had stayed sober & stayed in the band-sales of Kiss' music could be double, maybe even triple what they are today!!!!!

+B D , I loved this song the first time i heard it , yes it has a great " f u " atitude , not sure why he was dissappointed but i think i may have heard the same thing but not sure , i'm not sure . the entire album is by far and i hate to say this because ACE was not part of it but it is by far the most consistent album kiss ever did , their is not one song that is a " throw away " , they are all excellent songs. V V , iwas just tooo good , way too good. excellent guitarist , writer . This entire album really gets very little respect and its sooo wrong . It is the " new Kss " for sure and in no one let down and for me at first as a kid I said " FUCK THIS " , NO PETER , NO ACE , NO KISS but this was not the case at all

The Elder sucked. That's why it was ripped by critics AND KISS FANS at the time, and was their worst selling album - period. I could see where the gay, "artsy" or ultra metrosexual types might like it....but it definitely hurt the band's image at the time....which is why the follow up album, Creatures of the Night, did so poorly sales wise despite having some great material on it and being one that Paul and Gene both liked and looked favorably upon.

span is on the disc. Sadly, just like they said about Vinnie (who as a
person was said to be questionable, I know) "he was too good to be in
Kiss, as was St. Clair." Kiss is hard rocks "Sex Pistols" where it meant
to sound stripped and raw. I get it, but I liked The Elder much more.

this song is simple but full of attitude;  this album is great  lots of gem on it.  say what you will but vinnie could write songs, and when in a band and a direction he could play killer solos;  on his own he played like shit with no attitude or feel but in kiss he shined

I've said it once and I'll say in again, 1982-1986 was the greatest era of Kiss.  The best guitarists, Eric Carr, and the songs were heavy and not rudimentary.  Let the hateful comments begin and I don't care

For me 1983-1987 was the greatest era. But maybe it has something to do with age? I was 9 when Lick It Up was released and 13 when Crazy Nights came out. Those years were awesome! But I would also mention Creatures Of The Night the year before. Flawless album!

KISS always makes songs better than the demo before it. This is so much heavier than the version with Paul. Both are good though.
