Kinks, The - Summer's Gone Lyrics

Looking in a window on a rainy day.
Thinking about good things that I just threw away.
Looking in the gutter, watching the trash go flowing by.
Thinking it's Summer, but there are only clouds in the sky.

When I think about what we wasted, makes me sad,
We never appreciated what we had.
Now I'm standing in a doorway with my overcoat on,
It really feels like Summer's gone.
So alone.
Summer's gone.

It should have been a laugh, it should have been fun,
When I think of all the things that we did last Summer.
Now I look back, it seems such a crime,
We couldn't appreciate it at the time.

Now I'm standing in a doorway, thinking of Summers gone by.
It ought to make me happy, but it just makes me want to cry.
I was riding in the car with my mum and dad,
He was drivin' the car, the kids were drivin' him mad.
Dad looked at us, then he looked at his wife,
He must have wondered where we all came from.
And then mum said, "Dad, you know it won't last for long,
Before you know it, Summer's gone."
So alone.
Summer's gone.

I really blew it all, when I think it through,
I really lost it all when I lost you.
Now I'm standing in a doorway with water in my shoes,
It really feels like, feels like Summers gone.
So alone.
Summer's gone.
Summer's gone, so alone.
Summer's gone.

Kinks, The Summer's Gone Comments
  1. A.... ....

It has been 6 years as of today (October 24, 2013) that I was fired and taken from my beloved. It also fell an a Thursday that year. This song will always reminded of the time we spent together.

"Writer - Paul Anka" my shiny metallic ass. The Kinks stopped doing covers in 1965. Furthermore, aside from Willesden Green, there never has been a song on any Kinks album NOT sung by one of the brothers. (Nobby Dalton, the bassist after Pete Quaife quit, was coerced into singing the above tune for his dead-on Elvis impersonation. Throughout the song, you can hear Dave whooping from sheer exhiliaration hearing Dalton's slow, twangy drawl. The bit about the "little...little semi-detached" - so British an expression, so American the vocal, is hysterical.)

I was fired from a job on October 24, 2013 & was taken away from my beloved. This song always reminds me of the whole experience. "I really blew it all when I think it through, I really lost it all when I lost you...." You will ALWAYS be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Another great underrated song off a definately underrated album from the most underrated band in rock history!
It seems that most Kinks songs get better with repeated listenings, especially after not hearing it for a bit.
Great song for today, being Oct 5th and in Maine with a really strong cool breeze; 'It really feels like summer's gone..'

  25. L.... D....

    always loved this song.....gstk

  26. R.... O....

"...& then mom said ; dad ,ya know it won't last for long...before you know it summer's gone...." very poignant

  27. S.... C....

    wonderful!!!! Thank you!!

  28. S.... H....

Underrated--absolutely. One of the best written songs of all time. The reminiscence of the car trip suggests ever so subtly the cause of the speaker's present tragedy. The son has inherited his father's coldness and, now an adult, has ruined his own happiness. Once you lose summer, it's gone for good, and even memories are no consolation.

  29. d.... ....

@cgargiulutube No problem. I'm just glad somebody is watching this.

  30. c.... ....

Awesome! Thanks SO much for posting this song. Love it! Another Great Underrated Kinks Song...
