Kinks, The - Sleepwalker Lyrics

Ev'rybody got problems, buddy. I got mine.
When midnight comes around, I start to lose my mind.
When the sun puts out the light,
I join the creatures of the night,
Oh yeah.

I'm a sleepwalker.
I'm a night stalker.
I'm a street walker.
I'm a night hawker.

Ev'rybody got secrets that they wanna hide.
When midnight comes along, I take a look inside.
Don't go talkin' in your sleep:
I might come in for a peep,
Oh yeah.'

I'm a sleepwalker.
I'm a night stalker.

When ev'rybody's fast asleep, I start to creep.
Through the shadows of the moonlight, I walk my beat.
Better close your window tight:
I might come in for a bite,
Oh yeah.

When the night time comes, I start to creep.
I prowl around when you're fast asleep.
I walk around on my tippy toes,
And I get into places that nobody knows.

I'm always around if you wanna meet.
You can find me on almost ev'ry street.
You'll always get me on the telephone.
I'll even come to your home if you're ever alone.

I'm a sleepwalker.
I'm a night stalker.
I'm a street walker.
I'm a night hawker.
[Repeat]

AH 40 YEARS AGO. I'D LIKE TO BE BACK THERE NOW! SEE IT WAS ALL ABOUT SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK N' ROLL. IN OCEAN BEACH IT WAS THE BLUEPRINT FOR BEING "REALLY FREE" AND ALOTTA THE MUSIC IS A GOOD ACCOMPANIMENT.

  27. M.... L....

On rock and rolls Mt. Rushmore

Happy Birthday today(February 3) to Dave Davies. Cheers!

  30. S.... F....

If they could have been controlled like the Beatles they would not have been sabotaged by the British m5

  31. D.... B....

this song only went to #48 on the pop charts in 1977!!!

    D.... B....

Could say go figure but Arista had recently signed and promoted this LP.

    D.... B....

But got LOTS of airtime on the AOR stations (Meaning LOTS of FM play, where I got to love it)

    D.... B....

    Love your pic!!

  32. M.... P....

    The Kinks are the Kings

  33. G.... T....

    Bump........

  34. J.... P....

The kinks American phase whilst not as awful as a lot of the AOR of the time is still pretty bad and at best very ordinary. No wonder we didn't bother with it in the uk. Their brilliance apart from the odd track was well behind them.

    J.... P....

1:02 1:49 says you are wrong....

    J.... P....

Joseph Preston I don’t really think so, sleepwalker, give the people what they want, misfits, and low budget were all very good. Apart from that I wouldn’t defend much after 1972, but still, the albums mentioned are pretty good, different then their past shit sure, but not bad by any means. I do see how you could find it bad from how drastically different it is from their other music.

    J.... P....

Still loads better than that punk and ska bullocks you lot were listening to at the time.

    J.... P....

Maybe you should have paid more attention to the lyrics on this album... the Kinks were speaking to your criticism

It's all because of that music
    That we're slowly driftin' apart.
But it's only there to dance to,
So you shouldn't take it to heart.

    Music, only juke box music.
Only music, only juke box music

  35. Y.... ....

This reminds me of Steve Miller Band's "Take the Money and Run." Love the kinks!

    Y.... ....

Steve Miller came out with that in late '76, then the Kinks came out with this in early 1977. So, no ripping off going on at least. Great times.

  36. A.... D....

I love those guys! Greetings from Brazil!

  37. L.... d....

Ray Davies is a Musical Genius. Wrote songs for the common person the working person. Songs that happen in every day life. Long Live The Kinks.

  38. E.... L....

My Favorite up tempo rock song, and Dave Davies plays so beautiful on this song.

    E.... L....

Erik Lawaetz Awesome guitar work for sure! Great tone

  39. L.... ....

The Old Grey Whistle Test live version of this (see the thumbnail to the right) is better than this studio recording; Dave Davies's guitaring is more pronounced on it.

  40. E.... L....

one of Ray Davies best song,i know you disagree........

  41. s.... ....

On this day in 1977 {April 29th} the Kinks appeared in concert at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada...
At the time the quartets' "Sleepwalker" was at #52 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the following week it would peak at #48 {for 1 week} and it spent 7 weeks on the Top 100...
Between 1964 and 1984 the quartet had twenty-four Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 and their two biggest hits both peaked at #6, "Tired of Waiting for You" for 2 weeks on April 18th, 1965 and "Coming Dancing" for 2 weeks on July 10th, 1983...
They just missed having four records peak at #6 when "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night" both peaked at #7...
Their fifth Top 10 record was "Lola", it reached #9 in 1970...

  42. R.... C....

So many gems over so many years. The fact that I can enjoy "You Really Got Me", "Mr Churchill Says", "20th Century Man" and "Come Dancing" says so much about the versatility and timelessness of this band. God save the Kinks, and congratulations to SIR Ray Davies.

  43. J.... B....

    God Save the Kinks!

    J.... B....

    L>O>L>A>?

  44. j.... w....

great band (my favorite, seen them at least 15 times live) and this was an album that started them back to headliners in big arenas..when followed up by low budget..

  45. D.... H....

    who's watching the watchers !😎

  46. J.... B....

    Timeless rock +roll!!

  47. P.... M....

I'm such a huge fan...they are so underrated...I play this live in my band's every chance i get

  48. M.... B....

Boston dancer OWNED this...she was WICKED.......................

  49. B.... ....

The endless variety of music in the 70's was an era never to be repeated , so many great bands , I had forgot this tune till the sandwich shops radio reminded me , Saw the Kinks & Romantics together , one of the coolest shows I ever went to , besides the bands the crowd was in small groups all over the floor , not jam packed against each other , more like a party than a concert , vary cool .

  50. o.... ....

My third concert ever was Alice Cooper and The Kinks. at Anaheim Stadium, for this tour. A Rock and Roll fan for life, cemented by via The Kinks performance. You had to be there as a fan, and not just some jaded hack paid to write about it...

    o.... ....

    obbor4
Damn Cooper & The Kinks? What an awesome show. I've seen Alice a couple times- never got to see The Kinks.

  55. s.... ....

For us Third Shifters, this is right on

    s.... ....

I've worked third shift for a year but only think of the night stalker tv show when they sing

  56. D.... K....

do you sleep in your walk daily$

  57. M.... W....

    A great creeping tune!

  58. c.... ....

Easily one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Many bands borrowed/stole some of their sound. Steve Miller was just more blatant.

    c.... ....

Rick Aur Way to take a comment someone said about someone who doesn’t even know you and take it way too personally. Steve miller doesn’t even think of you as much as shit.

    c.... ....

    Ghost in you

    c.... ....

Steve Miller wrote the Joker in 1973 Sleepwalker was written in late 76 released in 77

    c.... ....

Deroga Tree I think maybe he’s referring to take the money and run because that song and this song share a similar drum intro but that song still came out a year earlier than sleepwalker AND if we’re playing this game take the money and run sounds very similar to sweet home Alabama in the chords during the verses which came out in 74 so in my opinion it’s all great!

    c.... ....

@New wave Sucks your knowledge of music puts it all in the proper orbit as far as i'm concerned ...."it's your saving grace" hahahaha

  59. P.... H....

Is there an extended version of this song ?   I thought they did a 12"  extended version of Sleepwalker ?

  60. T.... ....

    My favorite Kinks album!

  61. R.... M....

wow... the drummer plays the 'kata piss piss lick' in the intro... How cool!

    R.... M....

"piss lick" Can I lick your piss?

  62. M.... ....

    oh yeah!

  63. m.... ....

wow good tune, compared to their later shit ive been reviewing recently

  64. E.... T....

the Kinks can do no wrong...

    E.... T....

D Thomas Except that time they broke up

    E.... T....

Robbie Clark And except the time they made that song making fun of Jews.

  65. V.... C....

    Beautiful Kinks

  66. R.... K....

For both mentioned above or just Sleepwalker? Assuming sleep, absolutely. "Joining the creatures of the nite.....I'm a night stalker and streetwalker....Don't go talking in your sleep, I might come in for a peep.........When everyone's fast asleep, I start to creep....Better close your window tight, I might come in for a bite.....I might come to your home when you're ever alone...... I mean if you have something different, I am all ears. Don't know if Freddy Krueger was out yet.

  67. T.... P....

Did you really get that from the lyrics?

  68. M.... ....

ultravox wrote a song called sleepwalk after the kinks.

  69. R.... K....

What I loved about these guys was, in their day, protest and sardonic satire in tunes, took a subtle twist. Imagine calling their queen a whore (Victoria) (be they short, be they tall or small...Victoria loved them all....)---and this one---a song about a window peeper, classic Ray Davies.

  70. E.... S....

When the sun puts out the light...I believe.

  71. A.... P....

    more like mott the hoople

  72. E.... M....

The whole song sounds like The Steve Miller Band not just the drum intro.. Especially the vocals

    E.... M....

You mean Steve Miller Band sounds like the Kinks. SMB did some cool stuff but but the Kinks pre-date even Steve Miller.

  73. s.... ....

Thanks for this superior posting. Truly a forgotten kinks song

  74. d.... ....

    love this song

  75. H.... ....

SOUNDS LIKE "TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN " (DRUMINTRO) FROM THE STEVE MILLER BAND.
    I LOVE BOTH TRACKS.

  76. P.... ....

'When somebody puts out the light I join the creatures of the night...I'm a streetwalker'

  77. b.... ....

I came here from Rules of Engagement. lol

    b.... ....

ME TOO I HAD TO HEAR THE WHOLE SONG

  78. F.... ....

    Good Post! TY

  79. K.... O....

I LOVE them! Saw'em twice in 1977 and 1960, and Ray when he toured the show he did on MTV's first Unplugged

  80. C.... C....

    Thank you! Actual sound quality!
