Kinks, The - Schooldays Lyrics

If ever you think about the happiest days of your life
Cast back your mind for a while
And remember the time when you were a child.
Don't think of things that make you sad,
Just remember all the good times that you had.

Do you remember only happy days,
Full of flaming Junes and summer holidays?
Or do you remember those stormy Novembers
As we walked in the wind and the rain?
Schooldays were such happy days
Now they seem so far away,
I remember and I'll always treasure.
Schooldays were the happiest days of your life
But we never appreciate the good times we have
Until it's too late.

I miss all the acquaintances we made
And I'd go back if I could only find a way,
Schooldays were the happiest days
Though at the time they filled me with dismay.
We only remember what we choose to remember.
When I was a schoolboy I loathed regulations and rules
I hated my textbooks and my school uniform,
'Cos it made me conform,
And teachers were always disobeyed,
But I'd go back if I could only find a way.

Schooldays were the happiest days,
Now they seem so far away.
I remember and I'll always treasure
Schooldays were the happiest days of your life
But we never appreciate the good times we have
Until it's too late.
Now I wish I hadn't strayed,
And I'd go back if I could only find a way.
Those schooldays.

I saw the Kinks perform live at Pinkpop in 1977, bought the album the very next day and have loved it ever since. And suddenly, some 40 years later, anybody in Holland knows this song because it was used as an intro to a rather silly sitcom set in a primary school....

I know what Ray is singing about, I went to school in the late 50's and early 60's in Hampshire.... any Englishman growing up around that time would feel the same... nostalgic and wistful memories of happier times coming out from post war Britain.

This song should be played at every High school reunion just for laughs. A real sarcastic ode to the old days but still a great song.I guess the Kinks were there the only band that could pull off this good stuff in 1975.BTW this record was a flop when it came out. Still sounds good to me after 40yrs

  28. D.... B....

  39. B.... C....

Thanks so much for posting this sweet song!
My schooldays were miserable, and I'd never go back unless I could keep all my adult knowledge. But it doesn't stop me from loving this song. It's clearly meant to be ironic (I also loved the Modern Lovers' anthem "I'm Straight", even when I did lots of drugs as a teenager.)
History has really under-rated the Kinks. I think their output has been uneven (some of their albums are terrible), but Ray, Dave, and the rest of them made some of the greatest songs in the world! This is one of them. I love the time signature, tempo, and clever but simple chord changes. Wonderful lyrics and passionate singing. The harmonies are strained just enough to show that passion. The ending "choir" chord is spine-tingling. Ray and Dave Davies both wrote great songs (Dave's "Strangers" is my favorite Kinks song).

  40. H.... D....

Definitely part of me - forever and ever!

  41. k.... ....

    great album..right after soap opera!!

  42. a.... ....

I am kicking myself for losing my copy of this album long ago. I haven't heard these songs in 30 years. Thanks for posting. And why don't classic rock stations ever play these songs?

    a.... ....

antmanbee 100. Classic rock stations just play the same shit over and over again. I'm especially am tired of Tom Petty. The Kinks need to kick his ass after school!

  43. a.... ....

the happiest days of our lives?

    a.... ....

    sounds like the band.

    a.... ....

i hear it, now that u mention it. good observation.

  44. R.... ....

I wish sometimes I could go back to school days, Class rooms Teachers, Lessons Running round the playground playing off ground touch Or skipping or having a sneaking smoke in the girls toilets scared to death of getting caught, Everything was so innocent, So different.
