Kinks, The - Phobia Lyrics

Everybody got something hidden
In a darkness deep inside
Everybody gotta fatal flaw
Everybody got something to hide
Take a look into my eyes
See the fear and silent cries - phobia
Deep inside, take another look at it - phobia
Everybody got a phobia
Take another look, what you got - phobia
There are alleyways of your psyche
That have gotta be analyzed
Psychological penetration
Of the fear you cannot hide
There's a key to a door to be opened
And I wanna take a look inside
And in the darkest shadow of your mind
What you gonna find?
Phobia

Out under a technicolor ray
It all disappears on a bright, sunny day
But even on a crowded street
Somebody you might meet
Might trigger a repeat of phobia
Strikes again, fear of fire and being buried alive
Dizzy heights, wire coat hangers
Things that crawl and go bump in the night - phobia
Fear of germs
Creepy crawlies that make you squirm - phobia
Images of long ago, memories that you hardly know
A minor childhood incident
Triggering something deep below
Spiders' webs and black cats
Cockroaches and sewer rats
Full moons and witches hats
Creepy crawlies, vampire bats - phobia
I'm talking about phobia

Crowded rooms, too many faces
Suffocation, open spaces
Everybody gotta weird sensation
That they wanna keep trapped inside
Maybe it's a sexual deviation
Hiding beneath a respectable guise
If you are of this persuasion
There is just one explanation - phobia
Started out a long time ago - phobia
When you were small you may have seen a sight
But you were too young to know - phobia
What you got - phobia
Everybody got phobia, what you got - phobia
Everybody got phobia, take another look, what you got?
Everybody got phobia, what you got?
Phobia

Kinks, The Phobia Comments

Wow listen to those 1980s drums and guitar riffs. It's almost like a parody of glam metal. You never can tell with Ray Davies is it an homage or parody? Damn shame him and Pete Townsend never made an album together. I guess Townsend and Ronnie Lanes is closest we get

    This was 1993.

An unheralded classic! This whole album is great, but this track is absolutely killer. Thanks for the video! :)

I love this song, it is quite thought provoking..... I made this video about a year ago, lol, but only just put it up. Whats your favourite Kinks album

+CanadianMaster1 You shouldn't have waited! This is an awesome video. Great job! There are so many different types of Kinks albums that it's hard for me to narrow it down. I would say Arthur, Word of Mouth and Phobia are all WAY up on my list. I also love Sleepwalker, Think Visual and UK Jive. But honestly, there has never been a bad Kinks album in my opinion. They're all great; it's just a matter of degree. :) What's your favorite one? Check out Ray's solo album Working Man's Cafe if you haven't heard it already. It's also phenomenal.

+glennpagemusic I have heard Rays solo albums.... quite cool. My favourite album would have to be Return To Waterloo.... technically a Kinks album as only Dave is absent. Word Of Mouth if it has to be an album that Dave is on..... my favourite song, Sold Me Out...... which is on both Return To Waterloo and Word Of Mouth.... do you know Sold Me Out?

+CanadianMaster1 Love "Return to Waterloo"; the whole second side is particularly great. Four killer songs in a row, and "Voices in the Dark" is among my favorites! I also love "Word of Mouth" and "Sold Me Out." WOM is the album that made me a Kinks fan for life. Blew my mind the first time I heard it!

+glennpagemusic Word of Mouth us a good song too.... do you remember that great ending, with the guitar and the smashing drums, and it speeds up slightly? That was good. Going Solo is a very bouncy tune too.... about his daughter walking out on him, and how he feels he let her down as a parent. I wonder if Dave Davies played on the three songs from Return to Waterloo that ended up on Word of Mouth.... Going Solo, Missing Persons and Sold Me Out.... as they are EXACTLY the same versions.... same recordings (Sold Me Out was edited down for Return To Waterloo, and slightly remixed, but still the same version) . Those three songs are credited as The Kinks on Word Of Mouth so I am really thinking Dave could have played on them.... I swear I can hear his voice on Sold Me Out, and he did say in his book "Kinked" that it was his favourite song on the album and said "when we recorded it... blah, blah, blah" He could be talking about the same recording. I also LOVE the song War Is Over.... flipping great tune about the war... not all lovey dovey like most war songs
