Kinks, The - Nobody's Fool Lyrics

From the bright busy streets of the Charing Cross Road
To the dark little alleys in old Soho
From the smart noisy clubs where everybody goes
To the dark little streets that nobody knows

I couldn't care if the people don't notice me
They wouldn't know that I really exist
I'm nobody's shelter, I'm nobody's cover
I'm nobody's lover, and nobody's friend

I'm so use to lying and pretending
I'm nobody's fool and I'm nobody's friend

I can go for a walk on a crowded street
And see millions of faces staring at me
Some of them smiling, some of them glare
But most of them don't even know that I'm there

That's how I want to be 'cause no one belongs to me
I'm nobody's fool and I'm nobody's friend
Nobody pleads for me, nobody bleeds for me
I'm nobody's fool and I'm nobody's friend

I'm so use to lying and pretending
I'm nobody's fool and I'm nobody's friend

Kinks, The Nobody's Fool Comments
  1. N.... S....

    Profundamente conmovedor.

  2. j.... l....

I have been a Kinks fan since 1964 & this is the 1st time that I am listening to this wonderful song Thanks!🙂

  3. D.... O....

Someone compared it to Eleanor Rigby, but the song it really should be compared with is I Am a Rock. The songs share the same theme and make the same essential statement, but as much as I love and respect Paul Simon (which is a lot), I think this song is far superior. It makes IAAR sound like somebody's high school poem by comparison.

  4. t.... ....

What a little gem! Thanks for posting.

  5. d.... i....

This one is precious to me. First time hearing it.

  6. S.... L....

a song who discripe my own person quiet well.....

  7. M.... S....

I would be proud to have written a song like this. Ray Davies records a quick demo and never does anything else with it. He was such a great and prolific songwriter that he could do that sort of thing....

  8. c.... ....

second verse you've got "Nobody disease"? Sounds like Nobody notices, yea?

  9. B.... L....

A truly great Ray song. Beautiful...

  10. K.... C....

I like dave Davies version...but dave will not aknolege this track.

  11. m.... ....

The theme tune too budgie starring Adam faith

  12. c.... ....

    It is a demo !!

  13. J.... S....

This needs to be produced better. Piano is too loud. Amazing song, but sounds like a demo.

    J.... S....

    Is just a demo!

    J.... S....

@Paul Vulcano well that it explains it then!

  14. P.... V....

    Ray Davies is a genius!

    P.... V....

    Undoubtedly!

  15. A.... ....

    Wow.....just WOW !

  16. 1.... ....

    1.... ....

    19ki68nk October, 1971

  17. M.... L....

Had to replay this one several times over. Wow. You always wish these songs were longer... Bittersweet.

  18. S.... ....

When I'm drunk or sober, the Kinks are what I listen too. I fucking love the sadness when I'm sad. I enjoy feeling worse to be honest rather than happy. Peace and love <3

    S.... ....

+Slightlydelic Me too. Speaking for myself it's like a sort of luxury self pity. Luxury cos everything's ok now (for now). You never know what's round the corner. Do you know what I mean?

  19. v.... ....

    Nice tune.

  20. A.... V....

    Nobody'fool the Kinks: excellent! !

  21. E.... K....

Appalling singing not convinced this is a great song

    E.... K....

@Ellens Key Ray plays the character. It is simply an affectation.

    E.... K....

+sjames1955 Apparently she doesn't get it.

    E.... K....

    appallingly stupid comment

    E.... K....

There are those who get the Kinks the second they hear them for the first time; and those who will never understand them no matter how many times they hear them. Davies was and is not a songwriter like McCartney or Springsteen; he is an astute, canny observer of human nature, who sings passably enough and can set his observations to memorable music. Exquisite talent in two fields, melded together. Will Rogers, who can write unforgettable music. Johann Strauss, who can write unforgettable stories. There are better writers, and better musicians, but no one who does the two better together. Listen to "The Informer" to see what a turn Davies can do at the end to an otherwise innocent story

I wouldn't say her remark was stupid; she just lives in a two-dimensional world and never will see beyond simple things. It was for people such as her that rap music developed, and due to people like her it became popular. Fifty years from now, people will still appreciate the Kinks. Rap will be a wart on the butt of musical history.

If you ever want to stymie a rap "fan," ask them to hum a tune.

    E.... K....

Ray there uses more of a vibrato vocal here which is uncommon for him. Still another tune about one's inability to commit and to lay it all out on the line. Nobody ever did a better job at it.

  22. L.... A....

Another unexplainably obscure masterpice from the great master.

  23. m.... k....

Just love this song since i first heard it as the theme to Budgie.

  24. S.... W....

Makes you wonder how many forgotten tracks are still sitting on the self somewhere.

    S.... W....

Everything they did was a jewel.

    S.... W....

I have never heard a Kinks song I didn't like!

    S.... W....

A very good point. I agree totally and there are very few other acts you can say that about.

  25. P.... T....

"My girlfriend called up and said "come on over, nobody's home." So I went over to her house and sure enough, nobody was home!" - Rodney Dangerfield

  26. K.... K....

    Still Kings=The Kinks + Ray Davies 😇 😈

  27. W.... ....

Ray Davies's original version of the Budgie theme is even better than Cold Turkey's, which was very good. A wonderfully plaintive song with very dark, self-deprecating lyrics. One wonders what turmoil Davies was going through to casually produce such a (forgotten) gem. Reminiscent of Eleanor Rigby but more heartfelt, and in some ways, more uplifting.

    W.... ....

Ray Davies is bipolar and more on the depressive side. He tried to take his life in July 1973 at a show, took a bottle of valium, quite the band, kissed Dave goodbye and walked off. Luckily, his girlfriend noticed something was wrong and he survived. That bipolar really digs in, I know, I live with it, too.
