Kinks, The - Do It Again Lyrics

Standing in the middle of nowhere,
Wondering how to begin.
Lost between tomorrow and yesterday,
Between now and then.

And now we're back where we started,
Here we go round again.
Day after day I get up and I say
I better do it again.

Where are all the people going?
Round and round till we reach the end.
One day leading to another,
Get up, go out, do it again.

Then it's back where you started,
Here we go round again.
Back where you started,
Come on do it again.

And you think today is going to be better,
Change the world and do it again.
Give it all up and start all over,
You say you will but you don't know when.

Then it's back where you started,
Here we go round again.
Day after day I get up and I say
Come on do it again.

The days go by and you wish you were a different guy,
Different friends and a new set of clothes.
You make alterations and affect a new pose,
A new house, a new car, a new job, a new nose.
But it's superficial and it's only skin deep,
Because the voices in your head keep shouting in your sleep.
Get back, get back.

Back where you started, here we go round again,
Back where you started, come on do it again.

Back where you started, here we go round again,
Day after day I get up and I say, do it again.
Do it again.
Day after day I get up and I say, come on do it again.

This song has been stuck in my head for the last 2 days like some kind of MK-Ultra experiment aimed just at me...then, consider the lyrics. I love this this song though.

  13. Kevin Wilt

Takes me back to listening to KMET and KLOS this song was always on those stations in the winter of 84/85.

  14. James Kendall

Kinks are the greatest band of the '60s. Here we go 'round again.
Except for the Beatles. Whackin' hard like Stonehenge.
Get back. Standin' in the middle of nowhere wonderin' how to begin.
Where are all the people goin? In LA it's only superficial, only skin deep
'cause the voices in your head keep shufflin' in your sleep.
    Here we go 'round again.

  15. Bluestone524

Double beat coming into "but it's superficial and it's only skin deep"...awesome

  16. Bluestone524

Saw them at SUNY Oswego in 1988. Total pros. Dave Davies- as good as any guitarist I've ever seen live. Could play anything.

  17. David Bowman

    One of their greatest songs.

  18. Martin Stelter

Round and round till we reach the end

  19. 11Stucat

1983. My SR yr in HS and Navy Bootcamp 3 months after graduation

  20. Brian S

I'm 59 and am coming to the conclusion that when my times up I'll be ready. The good old days are gone and America is gone. Unless people wake and fight. And I mean blood and life.

  21. Alice in Payne

    Green Day rip off

    cinematic comics channel

Green Day wasn't even around when this song came out and the Kinks are way better-superstars compared to Green Day.

  22. joseph lemko

The Kinks can Do It Again anytime they want to as far as I am concerned. 👍

  23. MegaJyms

Now we´re back where we started.

  24. Pedro Baggins

    Green Day Walking Contradiction

  25. maximillionboi

  27. Stephen Jones

Damn, haven't heard THIS in 30+ years. Why don't I hear this on ANY of the 3 rock stations I listen to?

    Ricky Parker

    Because they SUCK

  28. Ricky Parker

Wish corporate controlled BULLSHIT classic rock radio stations would play "gems" like this instead of SHITTY SHIT SHIT like Bon Jovi and Journey.😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑😑

  29. Charles Cochrane

I saw the Kinks 6-8 times in the early 1980s and they were excellent! This is probably my second favorite song of theirs (fave is All Day and All of the Night). Would be GREAT if they did a reunion tour!!

  30. James Kendall

I'm surprised anyone doesn't love this.
Days go by and you wish you were a different guy,
new house, new job and a new nose.
This is from a few minutes after we beat the nazis to a pile
of bloody shit in '45. Doesn't anyone get this except for a few
of my friends in LA? Affect an new pose. Lost between
tomorrow and yesterday. Voices in my head keep shufflin'
    in my sleep.

  31. Steven Hendry

The kinks started everything for the future of rock when they played really got me

  32. Bob Loblaw

This sounds like the theme song to some cheesy 1995 TV show about cars, featuring mid-50 year old men who wear teal coloured golf shirts, with knee high shorts and white running shoes, who tour around in the 'coolest' sports cars blasting generic 'rock n roll'.

  33. james kesting

    outstanding song

  34. mikedoesseo

If anyone knows a Kinks song that is as good as this one, please let me know. I know of about 4 of their songs and I think they have like 40 albums or something. This song is a masterpiece to me.

    Alex Twist

You should try their 60s hits. This one sounds a lot like their records from that time with an 80s sound. Here are some that i love: "where have all the good times gone" "till the end of the day" "i am not like everybody's else" "you really got me" "all of the day and all of night" "i need you" "tired of waiting for you"

    Alex Twist

BTW you should also try a song by australian band Hoodoo Gurus called "bittersweet". When i hear "do it again" i think about this one too.

    David Bowman

20th Century Man, Jukebox Music, Lola, The Hard Way, Celluloid Heros, Sleepwalker, Victoria -- to name a few.

    Richard McCloud

    Destroyer is a good song

  35. PHFATT KCOBRA

Actually, one of my fave Kinks albums.

    mikedoesseo

Can you recommend other Kinks songs that are most similar to this one? I think this song is a masterpiece. Their catalog is so huge and I barely have enough time to listen to this song. :(

    PHFATT KCOBRA

@mikedoesseo 1st. Listen to thia whole album, it is very good. Try ( Destroyer ) good hard song.

    mikedoesseo

Thank you for that tip! Listen to the album this song is on? Word of Mouth?

  36. rich dunlop

    Hard day's night intro note.

  37. Michael Mckinney

1984 I was 14 and was much more optimistic than I am today.

    Kevin Wilt

I was 12 feeling the same way.

  38. Louie Gonzalez

Love the kinks Saw then in 85 at the Greek Theatre. Great show

  39. mellotronage

A great Kinks song is always life affirming. Ray, how you do dat?

    mikedoesseo

Can you recommend other Kinks songs that are as catchy and amazing as this one? More Do It Again than Living On A Thin Line you know? I think this song is a masterpiece I love it! Their catalog is just too big for a busy guy like me to comb through. :(

  40. Simon McCreath

"Well.., the days go by and you wish you were a different guy: different friends and a new set of clothes.
You make alterations that are affecting your pose.
    A new house.
    A new car.
    A new job.
    A new nose!
But it's superficial and it's only skin deep
because the voices in your head,
they'll keep you shouting in your sleep!
    Well.. Get Back!!!"

    Mark D'Aulerio

You make alterations and affect a new pose

  41. Dan Sobczak

    Steven Hendry

Yes it is a great song fully agree

    gringochucha

@mikedoesseo I love all their albums, but if you're looking for stuff like this, check out the whole Word of Mouth album.

The compilation Come Dancing with The Kinks is also really great.

  54. Aimee Davies

My jaw physically dropped as i heard walking contradiction 😞😂

    conditionals

Yeah I read it was similar and waited to hear something. Then Walking Contradiction just started playing 50 seconds in.

    Zach Harman

Yeah, to think that Green Day weren't big Kinks fans is naive at best. You can hear a heavy Kinks influence in a lot of their stuff.

    Nelson Parra Bastías

Green Day are big fans of The Kinks and The Who

  55. Eric

somehow this nugget from the '80s popped into my head while watching a vid on the jfk assassination.

    gary walters

please....what new car did she get? the 80's weren't all that great except for reagan, swatch watches, hyper color shirts, and mullets. (prolly wasn't the NOSE that was new)

  68. kevin lamont lewis

Dave and ray !do it again, please! Put the band back together.

    slide4180

    They hate each other, mate.

    Ken U. Diggitt

Yes, they've hated each other for for most of their existence. Although, Ray has said that he is up for it if they can do new stuff. Dave has come around a bit on the idea recently, but his health has been an issue. Here's hoping for one more!

  69. B Martin

Both of them??LOL...2 thumbs that is....not even worth commenting on. Great classic Kinks!

  70. Carol DaRonch

Love the people who give the thumbs down. Why bother wasting your time coming here. Great song no doubt

    Bob Green

I love the Kinks, but I can understand why anyone might give it the thumbs down, they could well be Kinks fans who don't like this particular song rather than trolls or haters.

    Dr. Rosenrosen

People who hate themselves like to hate things for no reason.

    james kesting

this is a great song! the kinks rock!!

    Roc Johnson

I love the allusion to the Kinks reverting to their early 70's sound in this song with the phrase, "Do it again"

    Brian Morrison

YES...I call it pissing on other people's parade...

  71. Juno

sorta sounds like Island In The Sun from weezer.

    John LaStrada

+Andrew Mesa Gaming - Andrew...Andrew...Andrew....Weezer formed as a band in 1992. "Do It Again," by The Kinks was released in 1985. So how could The Kinks song possibly sound like Weezer's song "Island In the Sun?" If it does, it's obviously a rip-off of "Do It Again," by The Kinks -- since the Kinks tune is seven years older than Weezer itself. (I forgive you Andrew. Happens often here on YouTube -- people don't check the stats or the years something was originally published).

    Juno

+John LaStrada okay sorry about that
