Kinks, The - Death Of A Clown Lyrics

My makeup is dry and it clags on my chin
I'm drowning my sorrows in whisky and gin
The lion tamer's whip doesn't crack anymore
The lions they won't fight and the tigers won't roar

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
So let's all drink to the death of a clown
Won't someone help me to break up this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown

The old fortune teller lies dead on the floor
Nobody needs fortunes told anymore
The trainer of insects is crouched on his knees
And frantically looking for runaway fleas

La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
So won't someone help me to break up this crown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la

@Kyle Shiflet I can vouch that he was a _TRUE_ gentleman that loved his fans both times I met 'em. A really wonderful person.

    K.... S....

@Captain Brandon Horror Film Lover yes he did I'd rather talk to him instead of some a list actor

    K.... S....

@Kyle Shiflet Same here. Give me somebody that is a legendary character actor or a b-film/escapist entertainment legend over a lot of too ego-stuffed "a-list assholes" as I call 'em!

I think of the Kinks as the best band after the Beatles, and this song was one of their very best, bloody brilliant track! We used to listen to it on a Dansette record player with the volume turned up full, and get our heads as close to the speaker panel on the front of the record player as possible. I still listen to this song today and still get the same powerful feeling of awe as I did when it was first released.

  12. s.... e....

  30. j.... l....

Simply a great song. I have seen The Kinks at least 15 times in my life & it has always amazed me why they never played this song at any of the concerts I have seen. This is just a personal thought about my favorite group.

  31. D.... S....

Kinks should have dedicated this song top Keith Moon. It fits perfectly.

  32. D.... ....

My mum knew my dad as a clown, he was a massive man that laughed all the time. He died in 1992. She followed him this year, they’re finally together. Death of a clown, I’m a clown reborn. Love you mum and dad.

It's funny how music gets imprinted on you when young. I only discovered what this song was in my teens after knowing (and loving) it as a kid when my parents played it. It's still a stunning song.

  48. R.... U....

This will always remind me on Alex de Iglesias' crazy-excellent "Balada Triste de Trompeta" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly-795KnkgA

    Eventually clowns aren't funny anymore.

The sixties and very early seventies was the last time an appreciably large proportion of western society felt free.

The cultural output of a people is directly correlated to the health of the subconscious human mind, that part which picks up on all the little things our "wakened" selves miss as we go about our daily business. The sixties was the last time a wave of the left swept over people and although the vast majority of the masses may have been completely unaware of it and would never have considered themselves politically lefties in a million years it was still powerful enough to engender a groundswell of hope which lodged deep within the psyche and manifested to the conscious mind the belief that somehow in some undefinable way things were changing for the better and humanity was going forward as one, whether or not the individual even cared about that.

It gave hope in burgeoning equality for all parts of the planet not because it was in the national interest but because it was the right thing to do; and with the regards to the "hippy movement", the extreme and ultimately highjacked wing of what the next step for human society could be, it suggested new and not so new ways for our next system of society to function. Those who are of artistic sensitivities will never fail to be moved by such potentially profound changes in the very fabric of our daily lives, and the wave was so strong it caused a change even in the unaware, that consequently the sixties generation was bequeathed a wonderful outpouring of creativity particularly in our most primal joyous endeavour: making noises in pleasant sounding ways and rhythms.

Because of the left; because of it making people feel they were all part of something meaningful and standing at the doors to a new world where people's voices could stop wars when enough of them took to the streets and, with that having been shown to be true, that ultimately those voices could take humanity to a new place. A place where even if you don't care about things like the morality which underlies our world and allows a slim chunk of us, and their descendants, to bask in luxury and privilege from the day they're born until the day they die without doing anything to earn it, while the majority of those who walk the Earth struggle to even meet their daily calorific needs and enough clean water to wash those calories down.

The fact that those things have been banished as a possibility, the fact that we no longer have reasons to send human beings to their deaths to either enhance or protect the national interest because the very notion of a national interest has itself lost meaning because the way of life itself has evolved, the fact that when you walk outside your front door the people you meet catch your eye and smile because they're actually happy to be going to carry out their daily occupation not because they have to but because they want to, and they want to because they're no longer driven to sell their time in order to get a little of what others get by default - be that good food, education, days in the sun, days where you just mostly lie about as our animal cousins do and simply enjoy existence, whatever; the fact that these things exist will again help stir the joy which comes from the belief that what's coming is better than what went before which permeates from the sixties and again widespread cultural output will flourish to the extent that it did then.

We're not there yet, rather than standing at the entrance of something wonderful as your generation did, today we must battle to turn back from the precipice caused by their failing to grasp the next way; or perhaps it was never meant to happen any other way, system changes have never in the entirety of human history been smooth and so there's no reason to believe this one shall be. But it's coming in one form or another.

Force your elected officials to do the things which appease resentment and feelings of injustice between nations and inside nations; force them to do the things which are in all our interests; ignore their words and look at their deeds and think, actually think, of what those deeds prove about whether they're trying to help the mass of humanity or hinder it. Every time one them utters the phrase "national interest" or "boost productivity" just turn off, stop giving them your time and your vote because they've just proved they're only intent on perpetuating the world's divisions; you are not a nation you are part of humanity, force them to work in humanity's interest, because the national interest can only ever lead to lack of unity and breed resentment which somewhere down the line always comes back to bite. They only want to boost productivity because it puts more in the pockets of those you already sell yourself short for, because under our current system we only ever get the chance to obtain what we need if we agree to receive less than what we're worth so that those who already own more than they could ever need can take a cut from what you do.

They steal your right to time spent as you choose, they steal your ability to deeply think so that you will forever be content with a life where you and everyone you will ever meet will never get what you are worth; they will forever seek to deny your subconscious mind the peace and understanding that would come to all if the next system when it comes is based on true egalitarianism. And the systems are changing, for no system we've had has endured longer than a few hundred years before we break through to a new way.

Help make it the system where we are as one and the new way of life has the aim of helping you - of helping us all because it's for the good of you, the right has never been and shall never be working for your good because you're simply not one of the in crowd no matter how much they tell you otherwise- not keeping you locked out of what's rightfully yours because you have sentience. They deny you true existence as it was meant to be; help change the system or we won't see much cultural output of note in the generations to come. Peace.

This was my first Kings album, it led off with Dave Davies song here, and perfect way for a eclectic record, with songs such as Harry rag(about weed) to start...back when they wre in their zone(65-72), but a special zone for them, when they were in between their early 60s power pop and early 70s lola period...just a wonderful couple albums, this and village green preservation society
