Kinks, The - A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Lyrics

Hello you, hello me, hello people we used to be
Isn't it strange, we never changed
We've been through it all yet we're still the same
And I know it's a miracle we still go, and for all we know
We might still have a way to go

Hello me, hello you, you say you want out
Want to start anew, throw in your hand
Break up the band, start a new life, be a new man
But for all we know, we might still have a way to go
Before you go, there's something you ought to know

There's a guy in my block, he lives for rock
He plays records day and night
And when he feels down he puts some rock 'n' roll on
And it makes him feel alright
And when he feels the world is closing in
He turns his stereo way up high

He just spends his life living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
He just spends his life living on the edge of reality
He just spends his life in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
He just spends his life living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
He just spends his life living on the edge of reality
He just spends his life in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
He just spends his life living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy

Look at me, look at you
You say we've got nothing left to prove
The King is dead, rock is done
You might be through but I've just begun
I don't know, I feel free and I won't let go
Before you go, there's something you ought to know

Dan is a fan and he lives for our music
It's the only thing that gets him by
He's watched us grow and he's seen all our shows
He's seen us low and he's seen us high
Oh, but you and me keep thinking
That the world's just passing us by

Don't want to spend my life living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy
Don't want to spend my life living on the edge of reality
Don't want to waste my life hiding away anymore
Don't want to spend my life living in a rock 'n' roll fantasy

  8. DARON EKAS

Most Beatles' songs were made about love, girlfriend...etc. Now the Kinks was for us "rock n roll sleepwalking misfits".

  9. DARON EKAS

My second most favorite Kinks song next to Don't Forget to Dance.

  10. matak99

This song gave me a place to be when my world was dark and empty as a young man. It still consoles me.

    As it did for me.

One of the best Kinks songs ever. Ray is talking to his brother Dave but ends up talking to himself. Goddamn so heartfelt.

  19. tvrose2008

Ever since I was kid, I would fantasize playing the acoustic guitar to which ever band had my attention. From The Kinks to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers to REM to U2 and now with our beloved Freddie Mercury and Queen. Talk about reaching for the stars.

  20. michael dillon

This song demonstrates the genius that is Ray Davies.

  21. Michael Kjoege

One of the very best Kinks tunes alongside Waterloo Sunset

  22. James Kendall

Typical Hollywood engineering but it works for me.
At least our tall buildings don't usually tip over in moderate
Richter 7.1 earthquakes. Might still have a way to go with this.
Kinks probably wrote this song about me.

  31. Dan Dunning

The Kinks should be at least, equal compared to the Stones. Now, in studio? How can anything, seriously. Anything, top the Beatles? No. It can't be done. Bowie came close.

"There's a guy on my block who lives for rock..." Perfect description of my friend Randy from high school, to whom I dedicate this song in his memory. Rest in peace, man.

    Ed Campbell

    gootchie Here’s to Randy

    jack mayhoffer

RIP Randy from a fellow Rock n Roll misfit.

  61. Guy Caballero

This song, which has always been touching, is presented in the very cool (and rocking good) "Sunny Afternoon" musical as a response to Pete Quaite's wanting to leave the band. Made me f-ing cry like a baby as it provided more concrete context (sorry for the alliteration) to Ray's pleading lyrics. Given Ray's involvement, I would assume there's some veracity to this.

  62. Colin Sanders

    entered Billboard July 22, 1978 .. reached #30

  63. Quint Hooper

    Great song.

  64. Dave Neighbors

Liked the Kinks over the years off and on but not as much as some of the other more popular groups- like the Stones. Recently bought the double album collection and after listening a few times realized how great the Kinks really are. My 17 year old son loves them, sings their songs and thinks they are better than the Beatles. Outstanding song writing ability. Diverse styles and really good stuff. Thank you Dave and Ray.

    cjn6strings

    Your son is right

    LesSmith45

That's Great Dave that your son loves the Kinks!!!. As far as better than the Beatles everyone's opinion is different and i respect that! Its just great he listens to them. IMO they are not better than the Beatles. That being said They are my Favorite British Invasion band. I still have to give the Beatles the top billing because of what they did for music history, there vast library of music in only a 7 year period will NEVER be matched. The Stones has to be there also because of their library and longevity, and the Who is the Who, all great historic bands. But I listen to the Kinks more than i listen to all three bands i mentioned. This song is my favorite song of all the kinks songs. Funny I rate the three above bands ahead of the kinks yet the only band i have seen live is the KINKS in 1979 (i have seen Paul McCartney twice but that is not the Beatles). The Low Budget tour. That tour is all over YouTube. Its a killer concert i will never ever forget seeing four guitarists all lined up at the edge of the stage jamming. I have been to many many concerts in my life and only two of them rate above the kinks concert. One was Roger Waters the Wall (huge Wall freak) the other was AC/DC Back in Black concert in 1980. That is really AWESOME you turned your 17 year old son onto this great music! My 12 year old son wont even give them a chance. He is stuck in today's SHIT Music! Oh well I am pretty sure my mom and neighborhood thought Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever album was shit when i was playing Wang Dang Sweet Poontang and the rest of the album at FULL VOLUME on my Pioneer stereo back in 1977!!!

  65. The Weeping Willow

My fav song by the Kinks~

  66. Thomas R. Skidmore

A very melancholic yet powerful hit.

  67. Gerry Cariou

Thanks for sharing what a great song!

  68. Barry A Rose

The best songwriters in the 20th century were Bob Dlyan, Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards and Ray Davies--and not necessarily in that order.  To me, Dylan and Ray Davies were the best ever.

    John Carbone

+Barry A Rose I always considered Ray Davies and Eddie Vedder to be the two best songwriters  of the last 50 years

    Barry A Rose

+John Carbone I would replace Eddie Vedder, who I like and is a fellow Chicago guy like me, with Bob Dylan.

    Robert Clark

Neil Young is in there somewhere , So is Brian Wilson .

  69. Jammin John Mascaro

I bought the LP when it first came out in 1978. As a long-time Kinks fan (I live in the U.S.) since 1964, I've always followed them, saw them in concert several times. Great album if you don't have it already in your Kinks collection!

    Quint Hooper

    Great post! Love it!

  70. Chip Zigrossi

    God save The Kinks!

  71. joe k

They never got their due credit, It's always the Beatles

    P Andrade

Unlike thieving Zeppelin, The Kinks didnt steal songs from poor American musicians with inferior lawyers. !

    Ralph Reinert

Well, I'd say the Kinks are one of the most famous rock bands in history. Although I think most people would rate the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and The Who as more famous than the Kinks, it would be difficult to say that the Kinks were not superstars of Rock and Roll. YMMV.

    Christin Saltnes

I like this one better ...

    Miki Domeny

Beatles started the real worldwide showbiz.. only one can do something first.. thats how it is

    Michael MD

Ralph Reinert.... Agree totally. In the early to mid 60’s there were 3 superstar British groups that defined the “Invasion”. (Beatles, Stones, and The Kinks) To a lesser degree but still popular were The Dave Clark 5. You couldn’t listen an AM radio station for more than ten minutes without hearing two of these groups. The Who didn’t invade until Live at Leeds and then Tommy later in the decade. LZepp was early 70’s

The Kinks underrated? Not to those of us that grew up in that era.

  72. Holdenon3

About the same time this record came out, Bad Company also had a song called "Rock and Roll Fantasy" .

    I compared the two songs.

It was clear to me, as a 14-year-old, that Bad Company were living in a Rock and Roll fantasy and that the Kinks were trying to tell me something.

    gkctex

I forgot to add that with this song and Juke Box Music, Ray seemed to be somewhat troubled by how much their music meant to some of their fans.

"He just spends his life in a rock and roll fantasy."  "It's only music, only juke box music."  "It's only records playing so you shouldn't take it to heart."

    Jason Cromwell

I think Ray is trying to say obsession of any sort is troubling, not just fans of his songs.  Don't ever get lost in anything, and forget to live.

    Bob Wintersteen

I was just having my girl listen to the story of this song...this after listening to the Bad Company song before it. I said almost the exact thing you wrote. Not from the 14 year old perspective, of course. Just wanted to share.

    gootchie

+Holdenon3 Both great songs, but with completely different meanings.

    Bill Joyce

Bad Company was a few years earlier. Both are good songs.

  73. jtownshend

Thanks for posting. Unfortunately, The Kinks belong to that hall of greatly underrated bands who made great music. I also include 10cc, Damned, Magazine, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Stranglers and more recently Supergrass just to name a few.

  74. Antonio Dias

    This is rock and roll!!!!!
