Kinks, The - (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman Lyrics

Woke up this morning, started to sneeze
I had a cigarette and a cup of tea
I looked in the mirror what did I see
A nine stone weakling with knobbly knees
I did my knees bend press ups touch my toes
I had another sneeze and I blew my nose
I looked in the mirror at my pigeon chest
I had to put on my clothes because it made me depressed
Surely there must be a way
For me to change the shape I'm in
Dissatisfied is what I am
I want to be a better man

Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman

Woke up this morning, what did I see
A big black cloud hanging over me
I switched on the radio and nearly dropped dead
The news was so bad that I fell out of bed
There was a gas strike, oil strike, lorry strike, bread strike
Got to be a Superman to survive
Gas bills, rent bills, tax bills, phone bills
I'm such a wreck but I'm staying alive

[Look in the paper, what do I see,
Robbery, violence, insanity.]

Hey girl we've got to get out of this place
There's got to be something better than this
I need you, but I hate to see you this way
If I were Superman then we'd fly away
I'd really like to change the world
And save it from the mess it's in
I'm too weak, I'm so thin
I'd like to fly but I can't even swim

Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman wish I could fly like Superman
Superman Superman I want to be like Superman
Superman Superman I want to fly like Superman

  8. John Gleeson

You're know you're a Grade A wankface when you comment on crap songs from bands with shit like '''the most underated band ever'', ''just as good, if not better, than the Beatles'' and other shite. Get a fucking grip.

  9. Don Blake

Great tune! Superman would be proud!

  10. Phayzyre105

Love it!! I'm just glad we still have the past to listen to because today's music sucks an Everest-sized mountain of ass.
And NO, don't any of you millenial jack offs come at me with that silly "there's good music out there you just have to look for it" bullshit either. Back when this song came out there was ALWAYS something good playing on the radio and you didn't have to look for nothing!

  22. Michael Terrasi

I met Ray Davies by pure chance at Heathrow Airport twenty-five years ago while waiting for a British Airways flight back to Boston.
I was at a news kiosk looking at Terry Gilliam Monty Python postcards and suddenly this song came through my head.
Ray came bopping along in step with this song.
Ray was disheveled and wearing a worn British Army mac.
I totally lost my cool as fanboy because the Kinks had played Boston a few months before.
I threw my arms around him.
I got the pictures to prove it.
Ernie the K using Mike Terrasi's phone.
    True story.

When I was little my dad would play this cd in the car and he gave me the cd when I got old enough to have my own car. I broke it accidentally one day and I was really sad. I totally forgot about them for a while until it came up in a conversation with a friend of mine. I mentioned how sad I felt over breaking the cd and he was like "the internet exists dude." I'm not very smart but at least I have good music taste.

  88. RJ Walls

Had a Dodge Challenger SRT and remember burying the needle once to this song on the AC Expressway. Ahh,, good times.

  89. Brian Sauer

Ok,ok,ok! I'll admit it. I've always had a soft spot for, and loved, some disco tunes. After all, I was 12 in '79 with a 30 year old Mom into disco! I've always liked the songs like this, I Was Made For Loving You by KISS and others with a rock riff to the music. Couple of Stones tunes from that era are the same way. Think that's why I also love Michael Jackson's Beat It with Mr Edward Van Halen on the guitar solo!

    Henry Garnett

so you listerned to this at 12 !!!!dont lie mug

    Brian Sauer

@Henry Garnett I gather you're being sarcastic, but Yep! Whatever was on rock radio at the time. That was the benefit of having young parents. And they were teens when The Kinks first hit the scene in the 60's. There were some songs that didn't get very much airplay, but I seem to have a memory for those kind of songs if I really like them. Not sure how old you are Henry, but back then, with the backlash against the popularity of Disco, the "cool thing" to do was "hate on" Disco (kind of what like you see with Nickelback). You didn't dare tell your friends you liked it! I never understood it because I liked the beats in a lot of Disco. Just thought I'd play it up a little with my first comment.
