King Crimson - Cat Food Lyrics

Lady Supermarket with an apple in her basket
Knocks in the manager's door;
Grooning to the muzak from a speaker in shoe rack
Lays out her goods on the floor;
Everything she's chosen is conveniently frozen.
"Eat it and come back for more!"

Lady Window Shopper with a new one in the hopper
Whips up a chemical brew;
Croaking to a neighbour while she polishes a sabre
Knows how to flavour a stew.
Never need to worry with a tin of 'Hurri Curri':
"Poisoned especially for you!"

No use to complain
If you're caught out in the rain;
Your mother's quite insane.
Cat food cat food cat food again.

Lady Yellow Stamper with a fillet in a hamper
Dying to finish the course;
Goodies for the table with a fable on the label
Drowning in miracle sauce.
Don't think I am that rude if I tell you that it's cat food,
"Not even fit for a horse!"

Sounds lovely. Tippett's piano rightfully restored.

  3. V.... I....

Fourteen years ago, a NASA Mars probe designer told me, "One day, I tried to eat cat food. That was possible."
I remembered this story two years ago, and I also ate luxry fish cat food. It did not taste but was greasy.

  4. D.... ....

Loved both versions, you guys complain a lot, jesus
    CAT FOOD!

  16. p.... ....

Piano too dominant and vocals from the cellar. Nothing special anyway. Prefer my Catfood in the original tin thanks

  17. H.... R....

How could any KC fan not love this? Thank you to all involved. I first heard this track in the early 80's while I was enlisted in the U.S. Marines! At the time I was collecting any King Crimson vinyl I could get my hands on. Due to my age I'm a late KC adopter, but since the late 70's, King Crimson has been my favorite band.

    H.... R....

Late KC adopter. Haha, then you see all these new people like me just trying to find anything on the internet.
KC has such an extensive discography my wallet wouldn't resuscitate, even if I tried buying second hand CDs. Plus I'm a student...

    H.... R....

@Mounster Chef You've got something I couldn't have dreamed of in 1982. You can listen to most all of the discography on YouTube and become an expert. I went by word of mouth and what I could find at record shops back then.

  18. L.... L....

sadly this is unlistenable. some one should take each channel and do two mono mixes and maybe it would at least be a notch above dreck.

  19. E.... G....

I heard somewhere that Led Zep's John Paul Jones got into the idea of tripping up the dancers from this song (think Black Dog!). Anyone have any JPJ contacts or insights?

  20. k.... h....

I was blown away when the band broke into "Cat Food" at the Toronto September 14,2019 performance.
Back in the 80's I knew a band in Peterborough who covered this song to a T. J.P. Hovercraft, George Bertok were 2 of the members of the band.
I had never heard King Crimson play it.
    What a treat.
Thanks I loved the 50th anniversary tour concert.

  21. R.... F....

    Great Version !!!! : D

  22. D.... A....

Keith Tippet doesn't play the piano like Keith Jarrett but like Cecil Taylor

  23. C.... F....

Never figured it out. But who's laughs is that 3:02 ? Gordon Haskell again ?

Nice mixe for sure! love the piano over the sinister bass line & lovely guitar comps.

  28. 5.... ....

Back from "automatic listening" of a well known piece to "active listening" again. Cat food - again.

  29. J.... B....

this rare gem of a video can at long last be seen on youtube!

  31. J.... P....

This came before Aladdin Sane from Bowie and Mike Garson equally off kilter piano playing, awesome version and I simply love the piano. The acoustic guitar near the end sounds amazing too.

    J.... P....

Good observation, I hadn't put those two together before you mentioned it

  32. M.... F....

Is Keith Tippett the Jamie Muir of the piano or is Jamie Muir the Keith Tippett of percussion? 🤔 Discuss...

    M.... F....

I'm going to say they're the same guy. A monk by day and hitting
the jazz bars to play screwball piano at night.

    M.... F....

    @zen babaloo Exactly 😉✔

    M.... F....

tippet is the tippet of the piano and muir the muir of percussion...

    M.... F....

@El NeGRo De CaNDiMaN You are correct, sir 😎✔ When all is said and done, that is the only possible answer.

  33. j.... a....

    👏👏👏😺😺

  34. N.... K....

Tippett is much more prominent in this edition, which is admittedly pretty cool.

  35. P.... B....

A more involved listening of this song for me. Keith Tippett rules. Glad to see he's back in action after last year's health scare.

Ironically, I'm playing this while eating chicken curry, the very cause of Robert Fripp's illness at the time which spawned the line of "Hurry Curry - not even fit for a horse!"

    P.... B....

    MUIR IS A JINN

  36. G.... P....

Tippett, the madman of the ivories! Thanks again David & Robert.

  37. A.... A....

Ah yes, good old BBC destroying the heritage of British contemporary pop culture because of "poor storage management".

    A.... A....

They killed off Reginald Molehusband too. The film wasn't even their property.

  38. m.... k....

    円熟の極み ありがとうございます。

  39. c.... ....

    Very interesting! Thanks, Keith Tippett!

  40. J.... S....

Were the effects in the guitar arpeggios in the refrain always there? I guess I haven't heard the single and album versions in a while because the guitar tone sounds new and much younger than the rest of the instruments. Reminiscent of the 80s stuff. Great version anyway.

    J.... S....

ADMIRABLE CONCEPTS, iAM NOT A MUSICIAN

  41. K.... B....

    Really cool version ❤

  42. G.... P....

waiting for october, KC here in Argentina!!!!!!!!!!

  43. R.... ....

    audio spaziale.

  44. A.... C....

I hope soon release the live version that was played in the Tour 2019, along with Frame by Frame and Elektric

    A.... C....

Try the live album from 2017

    A.... C....

@cookinsdabest Meltdown? I don´t think so, they don´t play Frame by Frame and Elektric in that tour.

  45. D.... C....

    Meat Loaf, again? ;)

  46. L.... -....

This obviously is the piano version. Greg's voice is very low, but this is still interesting.

  47. C.... F....

This version is not even fit for a horse....😎 Some woman even complained about this alternate take. Enter Lady Supermarket, with a apple in her basket, knocked on the manager's door to address it. Fact.

    C.... F....

No use to complain if you're caught out in the rain.

    C.... F....

    @zen babaloo
How Dare You ! (10cc) Take this, buddy: you're Mother's quite insane !!

    C.... F....

Let's just drown it in miracle sauce and be done with it.

  48. J.... B....

I had the extreme pleasure of seeing the band last night at Warner Theatre in Washington DC. The show was, in a word, INCREDIBLE. The play list was off the hook.

Conversation with my brother this morning:
    Did they do Cat Food?
    YES, they did Cat Food.
OK, but did they do Cirkus?
YES! They did Cirkus! Can you believe that?
Wow, they never do those numbers. I bet they didn’t do Moonchild.
Ha! Wrong again, they did Moonchild!
Ive never seen them do Moonchild (Neither had I and Ive seen this band live more times than I can count). How about Ladies Of The Road?
Well no, they did not do Ladies Of The Road. Now you’re getting greedy.

They did, in fact, do almost everything else your little heart could desire. Epitaph was PERFECT. Court Of The Crimson King was awesome, and included the coda, which I and the rest of the audience were not expecting. We started cheering, and they were still going. The coda was beautiful, so don’t blow it like we did. Construction Of Light was sublime. They did Frame By Frame, and it was great. I am not going to list every song they did here, but I think you are getting the picture. For me, the two highest points of the show both came after the intermission. First they did an unbelievable rendition of Indicipline. In that, it was all about the drummers. Oh the drummers. They went on a protracted drum solo at the top of the song that was simply amazing. Alternately in perfect unison, and then perfect counterpoint. They were absolutely seamless and if you closed your eyes you would think there was only one of them. One drummer with six arms. I could have listened to that all night, and I don’t think anyone there would argue with me. Then they did Starless. Oh my. I think this might have been the best Starless I have ever seen them do. It was another one I did not want them to end. Jacko had a real high point when he sang Islands. That was beautiful. It’s a song that really shows him at his best.

All in all it was a memorable show, and if they are coming anywhere near you, you must go see it. If they are not coming near you, well then you need to hop on a plane and catch the show wherever you can. It was that good.

    BRAVO!

    B.... D....

I was also at the show. It was magnificent.

    B.... D....

Dave L Magnificent. Good word to describe it. Cheers.

    B.... D....

Thank you for your show depiction. It gave me the same anticipation as your brother's to know if those incredible pieces actually had been played.

    Bravo!

    B.... D....

Just saw them on Tuesday in Chicago, this song was a surprise for sure. An amazingly great band live.

    B.... D....

Love K C. Glad you had great time Like play liss

  50. C.... M....

and as any true Crimson fan would tell you, the B side (in the UK ) was GROON which was not on any album for many many years

    C.... M....

Groon is a complete classic. Some of Fripp's pinched notes in that one
are howlingly funny. Bob was a serious funhog. Still is.

  51. A.... P....

Saw them this Tuesday. Amazing show.

  52. E.... S....

Only KC can make sound a piano so funny and dark at the same time.
    Such a Genius!👏👏👏

  53. G.... D....

Saw them last night in DC. EPIC ! OMG ! HOLY SHIT ! My first time since the double trio in New Orleans , at the House of blues . now I can die

    G.... D....

    Like hearing good reviews

  54. .... ....

    Great Album
    (*´-`) <3

    .... ....

    Yes, very great Album.

  55. c.... ....

They did an awesome version of this at the Warner Theater in DC last night! Jeremy Stacy is a great keyboardist as well as a drummer!

  56. C.... K....

I CAN'T hear Greg Lake. FAIL!

    C.... K....

    I can't hear dead people.

    C.... K....

Greg Lake's vocals are entirely in the right channel. So if you can't hear him you haven't hooked up your speakers properly and the only failure is yours. The good news is that now that you have been made aware, you can fix this and finally hear things in stereo.

    C.... K....

ELP. KC. Great bans great times

  57. G.... M....

I saw the show in DC last night. Simply amazing. They played this one!

  58. K.... S....

Clear as a bell! Great sounds, all of them almost disconnected and separate in the mix, yet make up this great track. Piano is an absolute treat.

    K.... S....

Gives me a goose rush every time I hear it.

  59. J.... F....

Only 14 to go and still no FALLEN ANGEL FOR FRIPP SAKE PLESE PLEASE DO FALLEN ANGEL....

    J.... F....

    Totaly agree

  60. T.... F....

Will this track be on the 50th Anniversary Editon 3 CD / Blu Ray of ITWOP? Also, Why Not All of KC Catalog including The ProjeKcts as 50th Anniversary 3 CD / Blu Ray Combos. Love that ITCOTCK is getting it as a new 50th Set.

  69. J.... S....

Damn I'm going to feel bad for this comments section because in about a few weeks it's going to be flooded with JoJokes and JoJo memes

    J.... S....

I wouldn't be too worried, while there WILL be some, not as many as anything from ITCOTCK. Anything after that would require actually investing time into learning about the music, and jojofags aren't capable of that if all they can do is spout memes without including anything about the song they're posting on.

    J.... S....

    @Hallstatt Saxon still

  70. A.... L....

Wow... That piano sound great... But the bright sound of the acoustic guitar on this mix is amazing!!

  71. G.... ....

Love cat food, though a bit too much hurry-curry for me. This is a great mix from a classic line-up.

  72. D.... N....

    Catfood ! ... Again !!!

  73. .... ....

    VERY GOOD !!
    I LIKE MY BEST SONG.
    THANKYOU !!

  74. 2.... ....

Everyone loves Cat Food! KC’s demented take on a pop song.

    2.... ....

King Crimson were insane last night. Mind-melting. They did play this song!

    2.... ....

It's insanely catchy... Gets stuck in my head for days every time...

  75. A.... D....

Gotta love Cat Food! Hope they play it in NYC.

    A.... D....

Alex D. - The people of the Chicago show were lucky. They got Cat Food, Larks 4, Frame by Frame, and Elektrik.

    A.... D....

2003Cpayne damn! I saw the setlist and it looks excellent. (Although, I’m really hoping for Sheltering Sky.)

    A.... D....

I'd love to hear Jeremy hammering the piano on this. He's an amazing musician.

    A.... D....

    Andrew Bradley - That’s what I’m expecting!

  78. A.... B....

I'd love to see a KC's Greatest Hits - a 7 inch single with this and Heartbeat, nicely confusing for casual listeners. 😀 Thanks again to the team. This one ought to go viral, the internet loves cats.

    A.... B....

Thinking about this... Imagine buying the single after seeing them on Top of the Pops, and then flipping it over and hearing Groon... A make or break experience for many.

Silly me, it's still here! On 2 different channels,no less.

    KING CRIMSON IS KING 👑
    Good time for you

    B.... F....

1970. K C. Bag of weed. Need I say more

    B.... F....

    @john Kulpowich okay, thank you

  85. A.... ....

I think Keith Tippet would make an excellent addition to the current line up. Although it's getting pretty crowded, he might have to come in off the bench...

    A.... ....

Brilliant - Have a subs bench, just in case it goes to extra time/somebody gets injured or maybe a penalty shoot-out or just to try-out some new players. We could even have match Day programs - I think you are on to something here!! :)

    A.... ....

Not only that, they could play for longer as people can have a rest!

  86. R.... T....

Ha ha! I‘d love to see the Top of the Pops video of the dancers struggling to dance along… I’ll have to look for that. 🤗

I think _In the Wake of Poseidon_ may’ve been the sixth or seventh King Crimson album I discovered? The first was _Discipline_ and the next several were also more accessible to me than _Poseidon,_ so I’ve held a special fondness in my heart for “Cat Food” ever since hearing it, since… ahhh, no offense, I *do* like King Crimson’s second album, but… this was in the mid-‘80s days of LP vinyl, and I’d find a record at 2nd Hand Tunes four blocks north from my place and run home with it, breathlessly place it on the turntable, drop the needle, and just sit cross-legged next to the speakers and actively listen to it, beginning to end, so… it was kind of a relief to hear at least one _Poseidon_ track that wasn’t super-esoteric!!

    (Again, though: great album!)

Boy, I don’t know what I’m going to do once this stream of 50th anniversary riches ends — these are now the highlight of my week! Can someone please make sure Robert is being fed and watered and properly taken care of? Maybe we can make it to 100… 🙏🏼
