Killing Joke - Butcher Lyrics

Watching the decoys of all description
Sparkle of colour creating diversion
The liars are out - they have all the assets
Crawling for oil they were bleeding for gold
Fruit tasting bitter and lead in the air
Butcher the womb and expect her to bear

Forests are falling there's smoke in my throat
Machine over man and the mass over mind
Re-assurance from face on my screen
Appointment with destiny for those who will run
Out of the virus immunity comes
Out of the virus immunity comes

Watching the decoys of all description
Sparkle of colour creating diversion
The liars are out they have all the assets
Crawling for oil they were bleeding for gold
Fruit tasting bitter and the lead in the air
Butcher the womb and expect her to bear

Humanity is the one who will destroy the Earth. Then we move on to another world. How to divert or slow down this process? Extinction Rebellion has tried but I fear it is impossible to stop. "Progress" is mass production and mass rape and mass extraction of Mother Earth. It is going to end.

  19. R.... S....

40 years ago in 1978 when killing joke formed, jaz was a freak in most people's mind on the thoughts going through his mind ,now 40 years latter ,was he just lucky on the world today ,or is he some kind off psychic , I would say the later

  25. T.... D....

I think the lyrics are about butchering mother earth in the name of profit, and the notion that keeping people ignorant to the evils of the world will only last for so long..."Out of the virus, immunity comes" or perhaps the latter is meant as humans as a virus to mother earth, and that she will eventually become immune to our ways.

  26. M.... ....

Ministry was listening to album when they were making Land Of Rape & Honey and Mind Is A Terrible Thing to Taste.

    M.... ....

    So what's your point?
This album is somewhat related to some fag band like ministry. Is ministry so self-indulged that they reject the outside world? No one should reject the outside world. Not musicians, not filmakers, not writers and NOT Politicians. Your 'American' "wars" that you "fight" overseas you cannot imagine the facts of. The burnings and mutilation and murders of innocent humans....even children!
With the bombing "formations" and the continuing press to reinvent and surpass previous machines of murder and their artillery as well.
I am going after power that you would not know the boundaries of...
"ME TOO" Put the judges on trial then...
Or does that rub the military the wrong way?

  27. o.... ....

Nine inch nails can camp out in every mass murderers house for an eternity but they will never write anything as truly intense as this masterpiece

    o.... ....

mumble mumble...i've always thought (since 81) it was an anti-war / anti war crimes piece... i may be totally wrong... indeed ... fuckin' italian here ::)) anyway i agree with you my friend. this track is a real real masterpiece, and yes, a war is a mass murder in the end.

    o.... ....

    oscillated Awesome!

    o.... ....

Brilliant acclamation! You sound like you're involved in Theatre like myself.

    o.... ....

    NIN = corny

  28. P.... L....

Sounds like Nine Inch Nails :P

    Yes, I know. :D

No, Nine Inch Nails sounds like them...

    P.... L....

Trent was still in the womb wimp. He stole from the joke . Idiot.

    P.... L....

Ronald Lauesen Trent used samples from Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey on Pretty Hate Machine.

  29. H.... K....

    echt mijn ding geweldig goed

  30. I.... B....

One of their greatest songs, brilliant album.

  31. c.... ....

Timeless classic thats still so relevant today. Long live the Joke..."You Should Know Why"

  32. .... ....

    We have Joy!!!

  33. S.... G....

Still means something - probably even more?

"Butcher the womb and expect her to bare"  What a lyric!

    S.... G....

+Stuart Graves It's 'bear' as in bear children. Yes, I know...I'm a pedant.

    S.... G....

@Lone Wilf Yeah, i know now (about the whole bear/bare thing, not your pedantry), had cause to google it a year or so back. Nothing quite like committing a grammatical error to history on the internet - I'll probably have a job interview 3 years from now and have some HR bitch will say, "You do know it's spelt "bear" right? I was looking through your comments history..."

    S.... G....

    Expect her to bear.

  34. p.... d....

my favorite album from KJ, and afcourse ''night time''

  35. A.... P....

My son says Dad, Killing Joke songs all sound the same, sorry son but this song doesn`t sound like any other Killing Joke song, best band on the planet, getting Youth back into the fold in 94 was awesome, but getting Big Paul back was even better, seen them 4 times since the original line up re-formed,looking forward to the new album and maybe a tour to go with it

  36. K.... P....

It's an ecological song aboot how we destroy the plant, a womb of our precious Mother Earth. I guess so.

  37. J.... B....

    sparkle of color

  38. P.... P....

I remember being in Kuwait, getting ready to head into Iraq outside the tent smoking a cig and some Brit sounding officer stopped outside our tent and was like, "Didn't realize you yanks had good taste too", I was like, "Sir, damn good music doesn't have boundaries". Damn good memories.

    P.... P....

you realise that KJ stands for anything against warmongering and killing?

    P.... P....

    Marcel Duchamp fuck off hippie

  40. w.... ....

there is no god ... there is only Killing Joke ....

  41. b.... ....

Every time is the first time. Masterpiece.

  42. B.... ....

Geordie Walker is easily one of the best players ever. The things he did were normally super different and the tone he managed from his equipment was one of a kind! Check out "Pleasures of the Flesh", "Fun and Games", "Inside the Termite Mound", and "We have joy". Those songs are in my mind the epitome of Geordie's sonic and harmonic brilliance.

  43. B.... ....

I was a wee bit lad punk rocker in Southern California when this came out. I was 13 when this came out.

  44. M.... A....

this is a band greater than the individual parts. Rhythm, melody and words. But listen to the guitar in the chorus.....it screams.....dissonance.

  45. J.... G....

    This whole song is epic!!!

  46. B.... ....

"Forests are falling, there's smoke in my throat
Machine over man and the mass over mind"

Those lyrics aren't too shabby either!

  47. p.... g....

31 yrs old !!...jeeesus i am old. This album is what got me into K.J. when it was 1st released. Doing overtime at amstrad hi fi somone bought it in to play LOUD and today i still think its beautifull..

    p.... g....

....... And now i'm 55 and this is still beautiful
    And relevant

  48. N.... N....

this is 31 years old! amazing.

  49. B.... ....

I remember how much this song blew my mind when it first came out. And its still EPIC!!!!

  50. K.... M....

"Fruit tasting bitter and lead in the air, butcher the womb and expect her to bear." What a line. That and, "Out of the virus, immunity comes."

  51. f.... ....

Killing Joke is simply the greatest band in the world.

  52. p.... g....

i am a also an E.L.P fan as much as K.J. .... i never thought of a comparison though!!

  53. n.... ....

@bingsy100 Thank you kindly for your comment. My awful music varies from mildly irritating right through to damn right annoying. Search for the Separation Circle if you can be bothered ;-)

  54. g.... ....

@xane3 fucking where? don't be a cocktease like that!!! what contemporary bands are this good?

  55. K.... T....

OMG, these guys were SO far ahead of their time. As someone noted below, this is still challenging circa 2011. Still fresh, still brilliant. Amazing stuff.

  56. t.... ....

Been listening to Killing joke since 1980. Sadly, they don't make tracks like this anymore...............

  57. n.... ....

    @bingsy100
Thanks for your kind comment. You could Google for Separation Circle- or you could search here for Separation Circle or Where Brick Fields Lay or Glass Bubble Home perhaps.

  58. s.... ....

    @Funkussionist Still pretty rad now

  59. s.... ....

The first side of this LP is probably too much to bear even for 2011. Amazing

  60. b.... i....

@nickfloodban you clearly have good taste and if this floats your boat then you have a great stepping stone to move on from and would love to hear your music if this is a reflection onto you. lets go!!

  61. n.... ....

Although not one of KJ's most famous or obviously 'big' songs, this particular song had a big effect on me as a songwriter. I've always loved contrasts of ugliness with glimpses of beauty (the latter occuring in the instrumental 'chorus' of "Butcher", giving a feeling of hope.......)

  62. S.... E....

@typejunky I agree, its the kj album i play most often, strong all the way through.

  63. c.... s....

John Peel session (27-4-81) version of this better. Less hiss; and it's got a brilliant vocal take.

  64. H.... C....

@Loobs666 So I drug all my friends up so they like my music? Sounds like a plan.

  65. H.... C....

I was a little dissapointed by 'Democracy' but listening to this has convinced me to get more Killing Joke :P

  66. H.... C....

@Loobs666 I always bring music to parties and no one ever plays them :(

  67. F.... ....

Hey, I bought this album when I was 18. Someone stole it at a party.
I haven't heard this song since then. It was pretty rad. at the time,

  68. S.... ....

    How relevant this still is!! ... "The liars are out, they have all the assets;
Crawling for oil, they were bleeding for gold."...

  69. J.... B....

This song as a fashionable glitter creepiness quality. One of my faves from the album.

How lucky you were when you were young !! This band is indeed completely amazing, and if I am not a big fan of the album What's THIS for...!, this song is totally awesome :P

  73. B.... d....

this song and its the album is just super young, my father listened to Killing Joke when he was a few years he gave me a CD of them and even I found it great because usually I only hear the heavy metal only that I like and I wanted to Just to say that this band is just amazing
