Khan, Chaka - And The Melody Still Lingers On (Night In Tunisia) Lyrics

A long time ago in the 40's
Dizzy and Bird gave us this song
They called it "A Night In Tunisia"
And the melody still lingers on

It was new and very strange
Blew the squares right off the stage
Few could play along
But the melody still lingers on

Max and Miles to name just two
Together they grew
The music was young and strong
And the melody still lingers on

They paved the way for generations
From Coltrane to Stevie
No one could stop the winds of change
Without them where'd we be?

The Duke and the Prez were there before
The past you can't ignore
The torch is lit, we'll keep the flame
And the melody remains the same

In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia
In the 40's
A night in tunisia

Truly blessed that as a 14 year old Aussie girl I had an older brother who was a magnificent drummer with consummate taste in music and musicians. He insisted that I not destroy his eardrums with pop and instead he opened the door to a world of musical gods and asked me to listen. Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Weather Report, Average White Band, Roberta Flack, The Manhattan Transfer, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Luther Vandross, Little Feat, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and on and on. So blown away.

I can't help but feel sssooo sorry for these poor saps ( kids!! ) that ... " Know Nothing " about the music of the 40's ....! They don't " Research Our Musical Heritage "!!! For back then...,we " Dressed Better " , " Spoke Better ( english!! Not this " Ghetto Vernacular " that makes us sound so .... " Unintelligent " which is why I don't follow others!!! ) . Anyway, ssooo glad to have found this ...!!! Being a drummer myself , I've loved this version since I first heard it!!! So,So Glad I was born a 50's child ... For that'a where most of the greatest music was ever created!!! As for this ... hip-hop slop, just keep it out of My Lane, and I shall stay in Mine.

  22. S.... D....

This is my favorite Chaka vocal 'orgasm', especially between 3:30 and 3:40! What was that?!! It's as if her voice launched and soared toward Pluto, then went into afterburner mode mid-stream. Awesome vocal! Awesome arrangement!!!...Chaka has rare moments like this that keep you drawn in. You just never know when they will occur!

    S.... D....

Cant say it any better than you did. Afterburner? Hell yessssss. Slayed all female sangers.

MY GUESS. the drummer is either Steve Ferrone (ex of AWB) or John Robinson, formerly with Rufus and Michael Jackson (studio work).

    t.... c....

    Casey Scheuerell is on drums.

  38. M.... P....

This is the reason Y the Beyoncé's of this world will B long 4gotten when they retire. They will never B able 2 produce a piece of work like this.

    M.... P....

    B B B B B

    M.... P....

AGREE I DANCED TO THIS IN THE NIGHT CLUBS DURING THE 1970S AND 1980'S

    M.... P....

were gonna look back at Chaka khan like woah

    M.... P....

Nah. There is a reason why Janet Jackson's music and legacy have longevity. Beyonce is an all-around performer/entertainer and is easily one of the best all-around entertainers (combo of vocals AND stage presence) alive. She'll be remembered as one of the best all-around entertainers of our time. Chaka is one of the GOATS and one of the greatest vocalists of all time but like most of my favorite vocalist, she isn't putting on a show like Janet or Beyonce. She is a part of the S4 community. The "Sing in one Spot, Sweat, and SANG) types.lol My favorite type of singers but I respect Beyonce.

  39. g.... d....

Who on this planet can match Chaka Kahn's vocal prowess. Bring it on... This is absolutely one of the great vocal feats ever. Bring back jazz to the forefront and paying tribute to all the greats before her.

  40. H.... B....

Incredible synth solo from Herbi...not from this planet...

    H.... B....

That's why I came here... to revisit Herbie's awesomeness on that solo... one of my favorite parts of this entire album, and that's saying a lot!

    H.... B....

that intro....that tension at 2:07... absolutely brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrilliant

    H.... B....

Herbie is playing over a Charlie Parker’s solo note for note!

  41. m.... s....

    Who's the drummer...o0?

    m.... s....

Casey Scheuerell is the drummer on this track.

  42. V.... C....

    My all time Chaka fave!!!

  43. g.... b....

putting Bird's outstanding solo in was genius.

  44. 1.... ....

Oh my god those keys are brilliant

  45. C.... R....

Chaka Kahn and Herbie Hancock are two of my favorite performers. They are a great match. I love this song as well. Happy to see them back. Thank for bringing these two great perfomers.

  46. J.... B....
