What a song

The only song that ever made me cry 5 times in a roy. Alecia Keys you are a gift.

This lady is a musical genius. Hope to meet her one day. Ms Keys you are Blessed beyond measure.

I was actually quite amazed that Alicia Keys wrote this song. I really like it, and I'm not a big Keys fan. It sounded like a Randy Newman song to me, and I could imagine his voice making it a lot more believeable. Somehow I find her singing a little insincere. (Sorry Alicia Keys fans, that's just my take). Newman has a way of writing childishly, and purposely not rhyming lyrics which give an edge to his songs. This one does something similar. I feel that singing it in such earnest reduces it, whereas a pinch of salt in the voice might cut the sacharine quality. Anyway, turns out Keys didn't write it alone, but with the help of  Emeli Sandé a British/African/Scotswoman with whom Keys has worked on several projects.
One last comment — in a song about the superiority of love over earthly possessions, it seems a little contradictory to force crappy advertizing on people who want to hear it. Alicia Keys' pile of gold is accruing every time I take a listen, and my trust in the words she sings devalues a little each time…
And, oh yes, please do give Basquiat a little credit for the stolen artwork, which is now making money for those already quite wealthy enough. If he were alive, he'd be turning over in his grave (carefully hidden Randy Newman reference — ha ha).
