Legend has it that El DeBarge was suppose the have recorded this song but it just didn’t happen. Then the producers of Kenny Roger heard it and thought it would be a perfect filler song with a potential to get picked up by easy listening and pop lite stations to showcase the album “They don’t make them like they use to,”. That is exactly what happened as pop radio starting playing this song. I love Prince’s music because it can be so unexpected in any wide range of genre and styles.

A fantastic Prince tune, he could write for anyone......anyone! Even his original tracks for specific artists are sung like those artists, singing towards their strengths vocally, so when they hear it, they can immediately resonate with it. There will never be another like Prince. The song he did for Celine Dion called With This Tear, hopefully that one makes the Originals part 2 album, what a gem.

Prince did a version of This ?? Thats news to me. I'm not a big KR fan, but his voice is legendary. (listen to Lady, or other hits).
The problem is that this is a pretty 'average' song. Nothing special. And the music (electric piano, etc.) is truly Awful!

He did more than that. He gifted him a gorgeous hand crafted chair configured of huge natural tree branches that look like Lebanon cedar. Of course, Prince retained songwriter credits. So he gets paid every time the song is played me in concert or listed in album tracks or streamed.

Not so much. The demo sounds nothing like this. This is the magic of Jay Graydon (the producer) more than it's the magic of Prince in this case. Jay is the one who added the "expensive chords". Prince didn't write them into the tune.

Prince was the master of jazz improvisation, he learnt this My the music master Miles Davis a famous jazz trumpeter. Prince took Miles famous Venus de Milo and using jazz improvisation, and using the same chords, he completely changed the melody, therefore creating Prince’s own fantastically awesome version of Venus de Milo.

Weirdly quaint. The simple 80's-ballad orchestration with electric piano is so NON-Prince. This had to have been in his transition from his 70's influenced sound.

Supposedly originally recorded by Prince in 1982, but indeed could be an earlier version. Sounds like something that could have been his 1979 album.

Original demo versions of songs are often much different from what is produced. The instrumentation here is solely the decision of the producer of this album, irrespective of the songwriter. Additional tidbit: that's El DeBarge on background vocals near the end.

Prince wrote many songs under different names. The best known maybe is Manic Monday under the name "Chistopher" ;)

Prince was tired of WB trying to hold rights to his music. Remember when Prince had slave shaved on his face. His was of standing up to them. Also when he became the Love symbol. He wrote under many aliases so he could retain rights to all his music after his big fall out with WB. So smart on his part & having others record it, " Even more brilliant". I feel its criminal when record labels take full control of rights to music. It's stealing someone's art imho.
