Kelsea Ballerini - Secondhand Smoke Lyrics

Sometimes you could hear a pin drop or the ticking of the clock
Between the surface conversation, no matter what they were saying
They never talked

Sometimes I would hear 'em screaming, when they thought that I was sleeping
They'd just fight about whatever, I don't know if they ever had a reason

Am I the product of a problem that I couldn't change?
Got his eyes, got her hair
So do I get their mistakes?

I know that you can't walk across a bridge that's already burned, so
What am I supposed to do?, I can't help that they chose
To breathe it in, but I don't wanna choke
On that secondhand smoke

Sometimes I hear myself saying hand-me-down words
It's so easy to forget that he ain't him and I ain't her

And when I think the fighting has to end in a goodbye,
I wanna prove me wrong, but I'm scared I'll prove me right, 'cause

I know that you can't walk across a bridge that's already burned, so
What am I supposed to do?, I can't help that they chose
To breathe it in, but I don't wanna choke
On that secondhand smoke

Oh, no

Will I be better, find forever, be the one to shake the habit,
Break away from broken things, and rise above the ashes?

I know that you can't walk across a bridge that's already burned, so
What am I supposed to do?, I can't help that they chose
To breathe it in, but I don't wanna choke
No, I ain't gonna choke
On that secondhand smoke

Oh

Kelsea Ballerini Secondhand Smoke Comments
  1. A.... E....

my parents got a divorce recently and it definitely was sad when it happened, but things are so much better now. no more crying and them yelling, no more my mom calling the cops on my dad, no more slamming doors and punching the walls, and no more having to stand up for my sister cuz she’s too young to be going through this. we’re all so much happier. i pray for everyone going through a mess like this, it’ll all get better, i promise. i just hope i don’t make their mistakes.

Oh my gosh wow. This is so vulnerable. Thank you for sharing this Kelsea. I appreciate your story. This could be relatable for so many. I’m reminded of the show ‘This Is Us’.

  9. L.... W....

Wow...I have been listening to this song a lot...you know the feeling when you know something bad is coming, but you don’t want to think about it? I try not to, but I can’t help it. I know that my parents can’t stay together, and know that’s for the best, but can’t help but be torn up. And while I know my mom’s right, but I feel like I am taking sides, and regardless of what happens, a piece of me will always be with both of my parents. It makes me feel worse because my mom has stayed because of my brothers and I. I can’t help but feel like I AM the product of a problem that I couldn’t change. Anyhow, listening to this song has helped me a lot. And while Kelsea may not be a huge star like other people, she has helped me in a way I can’t begin to explain. I hope I can meet her one day, just to thank her, and maybe talk a bit.

  12. S.... C....

This song is so relatable. "Got his eyes, got her hair, so do I get their mistakes?" is probably my favorite line in the song because it's literally me. When I was I think 7, my parents got a divorce. I had spent so long, so many years, for a 7 year old, listening to them argue when they thought that I was sleeping. I spent so long hoping and praying that they would stop and when I was in 2nd grade, they got a divorce and then a few months later, my dad moved from Florida to North Carolina and I didnt see him until about a year later, after my mom had met my now step dad, he came to visit and is now friends with both my mom and step dad and is happily married to my step mom in North Carolina. I hope that in the future when Im old enough to get married and stuff like that, that I don't make the same mistakes that they made.

  17. R.... H....

what an amazing voice she has. she is gonna go far I believe. all her songs are so very beautiful.

  18. K.... i....

This relates to me so much. When my mom was in high school she fell in love with my dad and got married in college. When I was 4 and my brother was 2 they got a divorce because he was abusive and now that my dads gone my life has gone the gutter. I'm the only kid in my class that has a step dad and I get bullied for it everyday. I dont even know why its a big deal but apparently it is. My dumbass father doesn't even come around anymore. The last time I saw him was 3 years ago. I dont want to make the same mistakes my mom did. But I have a feeling I will.

Keep your eyes above the ashes. Meet yourself where you are. Don't try to blame yourself. And if you aren't doing well one day, think back and remember how many days you already were strong.

  43. M.... B....

This is so me Kelsea. I've never heard a song that described exactly what my life was like. I love it

  44. R.... B....

    I love this song

  45. b.... w....

This is the story of my life. I've always felt this way since I was four years old

  46. L.... M....

I don't know what I would do without this song. It really hits home, especially at the moment. My parents have been divorced once, then they got back together and it worked for awhile. Not until recently, actually. The "got his eyes, got her hair" part really gets to me because I actually have basically the same eyes as my dad and look a lot like my mom. What I wouldn't give to have the album though, then I could listen to the song all the time

    L.... M....

I have her eyes and his hair

  47. J.... T....

wow wow wow wow wow lyrics so true

  48. s.... S....

If this song doesn't hit home, I don't know what does. Just saw her live, bought her cd and started playing on the way home. The moment this song came on, it was like someone made a song out of my childhood diary. Every word. She has so much talent.

  49. H.... S....

I love this song, keep up the work

  50. B.... S....

I believe that Kelsea will be world-renowned in the future. Her album is just so awesome.

    B.... S....

agreed. I love her music. she tells stories with her music.

    B.... S....

the words that I think come out of her mouth and I love her music too

  51. F.... L....

The lines "Am I the product of a problem that I couldn't change? Got his eyes, got her her hair, so do I get their mistakes?" hits me rather personally. My parents divorced when I was a toddler, but I still have faint, haunting memories of roaring arguments & uncontrollable rage. I know I'm not my parents, yet I've always had a fear that I'll end up repeating their mistakes. I love my mum, I don't want to end up like her; a single mother raising 2 children on next to nothing, semi-dependent on child support checks that didn't always come. This song kind of scares me, as it verbalizes what I fear. Perhaps one day I'll be able to rise above the ashes of my parent's marriage & find a wholesome love of my own.

    F.... L....

    +anna fehder *two

    F.... L....

Yeah my dad left when I was only in my mom's stomach

    F.... L....

    This song is my life

    F.... L....

Fae Lumb I know how you feel but my parents divorced when I was 10 so I heard a lot of arguments that drove my mom into depression and alcoholism and I'm scared I'll end up like my parents did I hope I'm able break through the wall they built for me and find a live that will overcome the past this song is the story of my life and I break to tears each time I hear it

    F.... L....

So true you just made me want to cry every word that you said is amazing

  52. B.... C....

Luckily I don't have to go through this, but my heart goes out to all who do.

    B.... C....

me too but my parents fight A LOT so sometimes I feel like will get a divorce but they haven't yet

  53. A.... P....

When this song describes your childhood...

  54. C.... W....

You are the best Kelsea, I love so much this song😄😄🎶🎵🎶
