Kelly, Paul - Deeper Water Lyrics

On a crowded beach in a distant time
At the height of summer see a boy of five
At the water's edge so nimble and free
Jumping over the ripples looking way out to sea

Now a man comes up from amongst the throng
Takes the young boy's hand and his hand is strong
And the child feels safe, yeah the child feels brave
As he's carried in those arms up and over the waves

Deeper water, deeper water, deeper water, calling them on

Let's move forward now and the child's seventeen
With a girl in the back seat tugging at his jeans
And she knows what she wants, she guides with her hand
As a voice cries inside him - I'm a man, I'm a man!

Deeper water, deeper water, deeper water, calling him on
Now the man meets a woman unlike all the rest
He doesn't know it yet but he's out of his depth
And he thinks he can run, it's a matter of pride
But he keeps coming back like a cork on the tide

Well the years hurry by and the woman loves the man
Then one night in the dark she grabs hold of his hand
Says 'There, can you feel it kicking inside!'
And the man gets a shiver right up and down his spine

Deeper water, deeper water, deeper water, calling them on

So the clock moves around and the child is a joy
But Death doesn't care just who it destroys
Now the woman gets sick, thins down to the bone
She says 'Where I'm going next, I'm going alone'

On a distant beach lonely and wild
At a later time see a man and a child
And the man takes the child up into his arms
Takes her over the breakers
To where the water is calm

Deeper water, deeper water,
deeper water, calling them on

Kelly, Paul Deeper Water Comments
  1. O.... J....

This is my favourite of Paul's songs, more-so now that I have my own little boy to take over the waves, to guide, love and protect. There's a wistfulness here that just gets me every time and brings a tear to my eye ... the cycle of wonder, fear, commitment, joy, sorrow, hope. Kinda makes me realise how much my own parents didn't really know what they were doing when they were young either, there's no road-map to being a dad or a mum. All we can do is love, be empathetic, be brave, be compassionate and to seize the small joys and moments life can bring you - they become the memories and fire that keeps you going during the dark times.

Life is fragile, the more we love the more we risk but the more beautiful it becomes.

    "And his hand is strong,
    And the child feels safe
    And the child feels great
    Then the cops come along
And the child finds out that the man isn't straight"

Man I'm 18 Australian on a gap year at the moment been living and working in the UK and travelling Europe when I get time off work. Been an awesome year but I still listen to Paul Kelly to give me a taste of the home land every now and again. Nearly makes me tear up such beautiful songs that remind me of growing up Aussie, parents playing Kelly in the car while driving me and my brother to the beach. Playing beach cricket till the sun no longer lit up the beautiful blue water of Sydney harbour. Driving home shorts still damp from salt water , feet still dusted with sand but yet knowing i couldn't feel more comfortable or lucky. beautiful song writer beautiful country. I may shed a tear when I walk out the gates of the airport to meet my old man as I return to my homeland after a year long adventure. Thank you Paul for giving me a taste of home even when I'm 1000 a miles away.

  8. L.... M....

Saw him play live at Kuranda Ampitheatre back in the late 90's (Atherton tablelands) A beautiful night. Sugar bats flying through the twilight sky...the faint smell of pot rising over the very happy crowd...and Paul Kelly and his muscians playing a night I will remember for the rest of my life.
He is a musical genius - but what I love best is his "yarns" - the stories. It's an integral part of our Australian culture. The Irish have a deep connection to stories and song - and we are very lucky that they immigrated to our land, and passed on this rich literary history to us.

    L.... M....

even the picture, on the album cover here, is so very Aussie....a skinny kid with a cricket bat in the middle of nowhere...

He’s getting some well overdue praise from the Australian mainstream these days, I’m glad to say. My parents have been fans since 1980 nd he’ll always be my favourite lyricist even if his music never fully enchanted me, he is the epitome of great australian storytelling
