Just now finding out she put this out recently---I couldn't think of anything she'd put out in the last decade---cool to see she still back in the musical game,with her unique,weir and quirky self.

I have seen many artists do this. Their original material is home made, fresh, has an edge & is kinda rough around the edges. Then they get comfortable in their success..  & that comfort replaces the driving passion & the arrogance of youth. And when they return, all I hear is this super-expensive polished top-end studio sound. The same sound as Daft Punk's last album. Coldplay. The Streets. And many more.
I feel like I'm listening to a product, instead of art. Sorry. It just doesn't do it for me.

+KINDLE I couldn't really disagree more; what I like about Kelis is that she's never really given a shit about sticking to a single genre or sound just for artificial 'constitency', and Food is one long love-letter to classic motown and R&B, it's familiar and intimate; where Fleshtone is a vodka and lemon at the edge of a dancefloor (and your best friend who makes sure you get home again) Food is a big filling carby meal at the end of a long week with some red wine. The sound is lush and layered and folded together for a reason, because it evokes big band numbers and a marriage of pop and instrumental.

I think that concluding that Kelis has wandered away from her artistry misses the thing I like most about Kelis - that each new album is a different aspect of her personality, from Kaleidoscope's brash challenger to Food's reminiscer, who takes comfort and style from the music of her childhood. Food isn't Kaleidoscope or Fleshtone and it shouldn't be.

It wasn't well mixed. That's my point. People fail to recognise how many times Teen Spirit was mixed to take away the clean sterile sound of expensive equipment of a major corporate label. Or how painstakingly long it took to record & mix Bohemian Rhapsody for it's punctuating lofty bass lines & clipped Drum fills. Or the punctilious detail found within Tear Drop for an infinite level of depth.

All the greats are heterogeneous.
This just sounds servile & straight forward.

I've never loved anyone with a terrible voice like I love Kelis.  Her singing voice is atrocious, but I still cannot help but be in her fan club.  Don't know what it is about her, I just love her.

It's not terrible. Just because she's not a powerhouse singer doesn't mean her voice is bad. Her voice is very soulful and unique. Raw & raspy.
