Keith Whitley - High Steel And Memories Lyrics
The boss man and the boys down at the job
Have been lettin' me slide by
And this old hard hat that I'm wearin'
Can't hide the tears falling from my eyes
Forty floors above Park Avenue
From up here things look just toys
And I realize how much I meant to you
Well I might boom out to Denver
A city that's already one mile high
But then I lie a lot about leaving
And the boys all know I'm not afraid to climb
So I'll just stay here in Dallas
Cause loving you's forever
But having you's a thing that just can't be
Your memory climbs
High steel in the sky
These days I just don't care
If I live or die
Well I just threw down a Winston
Watched it fall 'til it was out of sight
Then your memory hit me in the chest
And I wondered how it would feel to fly

Keith Whitley High Steel And Memories Comments
I’ve heard just about every Keith Whitley song there is, this is very special, sends chills down my spine. Very well written, sung, and lyrical. That steel guitar is unbelievable. Seems as if Keith knew he wouldn’t be on this earth very long, he wraps all his emotions into every song he sings and it’s very heart felt. I’ll never get over the death of him. The greatest ever hands down
Great song
Such mellow, soft tone,Love You Keith,to be this beautiful. NO ONE can ever be expected to best you!!
Listen to this everyday while I'm on the iron. Funny he mentions booming out to Denver. That's where I'm heading now.
I listened to this a lot while connecting when me and the ex split. Keith whitley has a song for everything.
this is a great song what heart
to many times in my life i have felt this way, someday soon.
I believe Keith wrote this song if I remember reading right somewhere
John Stack The fact that he's talking about living in Dallas, it doesn't seem like something he wrote. But he sure could sing any song as if he had written it..
Whitey Shaffer is the writer.
Been hanging steel for 26 yrs now--first time I heard this-and I thought I heard all Keith's music--I can relate to this.
The songs about suicide
I think that haunting steel guitar at the end, tells us how this story ended.. I don't think he has to wonder anymore....
Amazing song! Love it! So much emotion, classic Keith. I miss this guy so much...
Love Love this song I can really feel this song. R.I.P. Keith you are missed
The greatest singer I ever heard hands down.
would someone be a hero and post the chords i cant find them...:(
Hi, Sure, no problem. The chords are A Major, D Major, E Major, C Flat Minor, and C flat Major, also known as B Sharp. Hope this info helps. This was all I was able to make out the entire song. Would love to post a guitar tutorial of this song on my Youtube page if it will help out some people.
Wow country gold...I can't wait to cover this! Rip Keith, what a singer and man you were...
@budmorgan64 This is what mainstream is missin'! REAL heart felt songs. Everything in life ain't peaches. This is what you call heart felt music and sad songs are a part of REAL country or at least use to be.
I can see why this was never released . A country song about suicide ? I like the the song and I love Kieth , huge fan. I Think Kieth as a brother, but to dark of a song for mainstream. I still miss him , after all of this time.
wow ive never heard him sing this its a great song sung by the best singer thanks for posting this
@MAMsMom97 Two questions, I don't know if you would know this or not...but who is the writer of this song? And why didn't Keith ever record this song in the studio?
Jim Ratcliffe Waite shafer
Damn straight,Keith wanted to record this song!
one of the best songs he did!!!!!
love you kieth
Me too ❤️
Oh yeah, I remember that now. Let's see, that wasn't on the "No Stranger to the Rain" radio special from '99, I just listened to that on Saturday. That must've been from the Tribute Album Radio Special where they interviewed people that were close to Keith. I'll have to listen to that again.
This is my all time favorite Keith Whitley song!! This is the song he was singing just before he passed away when he freaked out Don Cook. Refer to the 2 hour Keith Whitley radio special to hear him talk about it. Great job on the video!!
I don't smoke, never have. And my husband smokes Marlboro Lights, so I don't know the difference.
Thank you very much. I wish he had included this on an album. I love the steel guitar at the end, how it makes that sweeping downward note to make one feel like he "flew."
I found where I saved a bunch of my old JKW videos. I'll be posting more when I'm able. Thanks for waiting, Brian.
Thanks, Elin! I've had so many people email me here on the Tube asking me when I was going to repost all my Keith Whitley videos. So that's what I worked on today since we had another snow day. Powerful song, isn't it?
