Kearney, Mat - Ghost Lyrics
You took the best of me, best of me
That I'll never know
I'm left with the rest of me, rest of me
And I can't let go
It's like a waterfall in my head
Oh won't you tell me why
I keep waiting up at night
Leaving on the lights
Like you never said goodbye?
I hear you at the door
Footsteps on the floor
But you're not here no more
What hurts the most
Sleeping with your ghost (oh)
I still feel you holding me, holding me
But all the warm is gone
I still hear you calling me, calling me
Where I don't belong
How do you take the knife from your heart
When every beat still hurts the same
Oh won't you tell me why
I keep waiting up at night
Leaving on the lights
Like you never said goodbye?
I hear you at the door
Footsteps on the floor
But you're not here no more
What hurts the most
Is sleeping with your ghost (oh)
Sleeping with your ghost (oh)
When we had our baby girl I was scared to death
And the doctor said "darling, you ready to push"
Drove home like we stole the sun
Those kind of memories don't fade, don't run
They're stuck to the back of my mind
I hear you blowing in the trees at night
I'm still sleeping on my own side
Yeah, they said you'd never be prepared for the worst ones
You took your bow, they dropped the curtains
There's no encore, just me on the floor
Waiting here for more
Oh won't you tell me why
I keep waiting up at night
Leaving on the lights
Like you never said goodbye?
I hear you at the door
Footsteps on the floor
But you're not here no more
What hurts the most
Is sleeping with your ghost (oh)
Sleeping with your ghost (oh)
Sleeping with your ghost [x4]

Kearney, Mat Ghost Comments
This song hits home even after 10 years for me. Never gone away. Stings the same. Hope is a dangerous thing. Also a great thing. This song rides that line. Great song Matt

Who is this song written about?
Excerpt from an interview :
JFH (Mark):
A couple of these songs are particularly haunting. I'm thinking "Moving On" and "Ghost."
Whose stories are they telling? Is it important to you to stretch the emotional range of the songs you write?
Mat: Yeah, those are two of the darker songs. "Moving On" is one of my favorite songs on the record.
It was written from a very raw place but ultimately it's about realizing you have to forgive and move on.
"Ghost" is one of the sadder songs I've written. It's a random story about loss. There has been some of that in our family, where we've lost someone dear to us.
So I really tapped into that and it became a gut-wrenching song.
