Kate Bush - Heads We're Dancing Lyrics

You talked me into the game of chance.
It was '39, before the music started,
When you walked up to me and you said,
"Hey, heads we dance."
Well, I didn't know who you were
Until I saw the morning paper:
There was a picture of you
A picture of you 'cross the front page.
It looked just like you, just like you in every way.
But it couldn't be true.
It couldn't be true.
You stepped out of a stranger.

They say that the Devil is a charming man.
And just like you I bet he can dance.
And he's coming up behind in his long
Tailed black coat dance,
All tails in the air.
But the penny landed with its head dancing.

A picture of you, a picture of you in uniform,
Standing with your head held high,
Hot down to the floor.
But it couldn't be you.
It couldn't be you.
It's a picture of Hitler.

He go "Do-do-do-do-do"
He go "Do-do-do-do-do"
He go "Do-do-do-do-do--
Do you want to dance?"

Well, I couldn't see what was to be,
So I just stood there laughing.

A picture of you, a picture of you in uniform,
Standing with your head held high,
Hot down to the floor.
But it couldn't be you.
It couldn't be you.
It's a picture of Hitler.

He go "Mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh"
He go "Mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh"
He go "Mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh-mmh--
"Heads we're dancing."

This may be the only time Karn got paid. 0 divided by 4 gets Sylvian bank.

I would have danced with Hitler.

I find it interesting that the song that follows Heads We're Dancing on The Sensual World album is Deeper Understanding with the lyric "As the people here turn colder". The devil might be dangerous and encourage explicit, mean, sadisticness but at least he's fiery with some kind of passion. By comparison, the modern society that Kate talks about are just cold and dead and possibly believe in nothing and everything (remember, "the only thing it takes for evil to flourish is for 'good' people to do nothing"), so much that they even make it infuriatingly impossible to even display anger to them. Most modern devils are implicitly practitioners of evil and compose a great number of the population in some places, not least parts of the UK.

Please take a look at my channel for a magical tour of 55 of Kate Bush's songs, including the masterful Heads We're Dancing. The playlist's meant to tell a story/create a mood rather than being a list of most famous songs although certainly some of those are there.

Only Kate would do a song about dancing with Hitler

    C.... W....

Actually it is Heinrich Himmler she sings about. Listen.

It's actually based from a story Bush heard from a family friend after meeting Oppenheimer. Not knowing it was him, the friend was so engaged and charmed by Oppenheimer prior but later disgusted upon finding out. Bush would write 'Heads...' from the "what if" perspective of a woman dancing with this devilish, charismatic man one evening only to find out later it was Hitler.

My favorite kind of song. Beautifully orchestral but also dark and menacing as hell

    t.... ....

    Like some Strawbs

  15. C.... S....

    Mick Karn RIP

  16. R.... R....

I always think the implicit threat is 'tails you die'. And I love the sinuous, slightly menacing string arrangement that comes in at the end. Unsettling yet addictive.

    R.... R....

Fuck, that's brilliant. Never thought about this.

Definitely the same school of sound.

With the great Mick Karn on bass. Doesn't get any better. Kate is an Angel.
