I think that song was really a little more specific than you think. That song was about people who subject themselves to being sad, the people who act indifferent, dress in black and dye their hair to stand out. Emo as a subculture is a sad case, and a lot of 'emos' are just confused people seeking a level attention - they pretend. Passing Bird is not a song to attack those who are sad but those who pretend to be in my opinion. At any case, I respect Katatonia a lot and they write great music.
