Karla Bonoff - Lose Again Lyrics

Save me, free me from my heart this time
Train's goin' down the track and I stay behind

Nothin' can free me from this ball and chain
I made up my mind that I would live today
And you're keepin' me goin', I know it's insane
'Cause I love you, and lose again

When the heart calls, the mind obeys
And it knows better than me
Hold on one more day and maybe he'll be true

Nothin' can free me from this ball and chain
I made up my mind that I would live today
And you're keepin' me goin', I know it's insane
'Cause I love you, and I lose again

Save me, free me from my heart this time
Train's goin' down the track and I stay behind

Nothin' can free me from this ball and chain
I made up my mind that I would live today
And you're keepin' me goin', I know it's insane
'Cause I love you, and lose again

Karla Bonoff Lose Again Comments
  1. H.... S....

saw her with James Taylor about 1982 in Rhode island somewhere. what a great show. she sings like an angel. James was his usual fabulous self.

  2. n.... ....

    great songwriter.great singer.

  3. p.... ....

Hey, everybody's entitled to their opinion, it's something to express, not to argue about. I love Linda Ronstadt like no one else. Well, like many others do as well, I would guess..........I also love Karla like no one else. They both have my unbridled admiration. My opinion on Lose Again is that, given the choice, I prefer Karla. When I listen to Linda's version, I think of Karla.......One thing for certain, If we didn't have Karla's version, we wouldn't have Linda's.......

  4. p.... ....

Thank you so much for this, Karla. Such a beautiful voice.

  5. d.... l....

Incredible voice and such a talented writer/composer. Wrote so many great songs, many sung by Linda Ronstadt. I love her voice and how she styles it. Reminds me of the kind of pure voice that James Taylor has. Just haunting.

  6. J.... D....

If you're hearing Karla for the first time, you'd better be ready to be captivated. Her songs about matters of the heart are of the highest order. Don't stop here...........

  7. P.... L....

I get all of the Linda/Karla comparisons and contrasts by everyone. I too find myself comparing these two superb renderings of the same song. Love them both. But I started thinking, whereas Linda is always peerless as a live performer, I bet Karla isn't quite so smooth with this one when she's outside the studio. Wrong wrong wrong. Its just as stunning when she's live. The soft and gentle high notes as she sings, "leave today" and "love you", are musical perfection. So Linda gets a 9 from me. But Karla gets the 10 for interpreting her own work so beautifully. And it's not often that I'm prepared to give Linda less than 10.

  8. R.... C....

For someone who was known primarily as a song writer, no one does justice to her songs as well as she. And that voice.

  9. g.... s....

An absolutely beautiful song. Beautifully composed, sang and played. Heart breaking, poetic lyrics. A real gem.

  10. c.... z....

"When the heart calls, the mind obeys; it knows better than me."

  11. K.... D....

    Linda's better by far!####!!!💕💕💕

    K.... D....

no need to go there-- BOTH did the song, their way

  12. h.... ....

Karla is such an accomplished piano player. Her music lessons, which she makes jokes about, are evident and her teacher taught her well. I could listen to her play piano for hours

  13. f.... ....

    Such an amazing songwriter

  14. m.... m....

magnifique chanson & voix de karla bonoff..... une partie de mon adolescence a m'imaginer une romance avec karla!!!

  15. j.... ....

What a songwriter/composer.!. Thank You Karla.!.

  16. D.... K....

When she says baby...I cream my jeans...

  17. D.... K....

Why don't you rip my foolish heart out of my chest and let the blood run down your arm...

  18. J.... A....

I love her voice. Brings back beautiful memories of a past that never will return.

  19. R.... T....

    Great album!

  20. d.... ....

    I really feel this song.

  21. T.... B....

it's unfortunate to finally meet someone you admire and they end up bring pretty hostile..I simply said I loved her since my teens and she was sarcastic toward me..weird

  22. M.... ....

Amazing voice - never heard her sing.

    M.... ....

...she tours fairly regularly. Unfortunately it's to many of the same places....like Ram's Head in Baltimore...the City Wineries around the country.

  23. K.... K....

    Beautiful song.....

  24. D.... H....

She is going to be at our concert venue for the third time at the end of this month with Nina Gerber backing her up..

This song is PERFECTION, one of the greatest 'resignation of heartbreak' songs of ALL time, and between her voice, the simple/pure arrangement, and that haunting piano work it NEVER fails to not only give me shivers, but bring me to tears every time I hear it!!

  25. K.... B....

She's written so many songs that continue to move my soul each time I hear her sing them.

  26. B.... ....

It was Dusty Springfield's wonderful cover than brought me here and I've very glad she did. Karla has an astounding voice. Think I'll be tracking her albums! Brilliant upload. Cheers.

  27. F.... H....

I'm a huge Karla fan and this song wrecks me.  Beautiful, flawless.  Gives me shivers.  I was lucky enough to see her, with J.D. Souther, at a small venue in Seattle.  I'll never forget it.

    F.... H....

    I'm emerald with envy!

    F.... H....

    Sweet person, too.

    F.... H....

WOW! I would have given anything to have been there!!

  28. m.... ....

This song, like most of Karla's, needs pathos, subtlety and ache ~ all of which are missing from Linda's version ~ and it DOESN'T call for "ballsy" ~ which Linda excels at. Karla's renditions of her own songs always break my heart, you feel them as she must have felt them. No contest.

    m.... ....

Fortunately we don't have to choose. Asking me whether I like Karla or Linda better is like asking which of my children I love more. I love both. This first album of Karla's, I think I just about wore it out in college. The '70s... good times.

    m.... ....

@Susan It's always gotta be a contest to some people. Recently an interviewer was gushing to Linda about how she sang Blue Bayou better than Roy Orbison. She quickly scolded him that nobody sings better than Roy Orbison. If he'd pointed out that hers was more popular, that would have been an apt observation, but like I said, some people....

    m.... ....

    Absolutely.

    m.... ....

@Don Disagree. Karla has wonderful colors, feelings and yes pathos, just not the power. Karla wins here.

    m.... ....

Really! Why the contest? These are two different interpretations and articulations of a poem. Both --happily!-- are well worth the listen...over and over.

  29. g.... ....

For those who love Linda's version better listen up. Karla is the songwriter and Linda is a performer like Tony Bennett. The songwriters version will always be better because she lived it.

    g.... ....

And Willie's "Blue Eyes ....." is second fiddle?

    g.... ....

    @Morning Sky Apples and oranges.

    g.... ....

    Sure Linda lived it, too.

    g.... ....

There's really no need to pit them against each other to begin with.

    g.... ....

If it wasn’t for Linda, Karla would be unknown.

  30. b.... ....

great tune. but I like Linda's version better. it's just way more ballsier

    b.... ....

    bisp25, Lind doesn't have balls...

  31. S.... S....

Nice song and thanks for posting it but you've got the lyrics wrong:

"But nothing can save me from this ball and chain
I've made up my mind I would live today"

    The right lyrics are:

"But nothing can save me from this ball and chain
I've made up my mind I would leave today"

  32. K.... E....

A too much overlooked and possibly, now, forgotten but wonderful artist.

    K.... E....

My aunt just saw her at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. Apparently her voice is still the same, and she's still touring and singing her beautiful songs.

    K.... E....

saw Karla in NYC at the Cultural Society.Splendid.

  33. E.... H....

Still brings tears to my eyes.  This music was a soundtrack of my life at that time.  Fortunately I came out the other side but when I hear this it reminds me of the depths where I dwelled then.  I thank you Lord Jesus for bringing me out, blessing me with all those in my life now.  Anyone listening or reading, just turn to Him and He can and will save you even from the pain of now.

  34. b.... ....

Wow - story of my situation too. 4 plus years going in circles. Tomorrow can be a new day...

  35. J.... S....

One of the great lost songs.

  36. R.... C....

Story of my love life (sigh)

  37. M.... C....

    ♥♥♥

  38. 6.... ....

Every time I listen to this song, I cry.

  39. S.... A....

My first experience hearing Karla Bonoff. No one knows a song better than the writer. Not many have such an amazing voice to go along with their remarkable arrangements.

  40. M.... D....

    She's a great writer , and singer

  41. c.... n....

huge Ronstadt fan, but never heard Ms.Bonoff sing it. so much softer and the piano so beautiful!

    c.... n....

Karla wrote it, and her rendition has a softer, lilting quality than Linda's.  I love Linda's version too, but her voice seems to overpower the lyrics at times.  Just my 2¢

    c.... n....

    yeah Karla B wrote this

    c.... n....

@Fred Goodwin Yup, I love the Ronstadt but, what you say is true. No matter how you feel about Bonoff's singing she a rather unheralded composer, take a listen to her catalog, really excellent.

  42. K.... B....

@duran, love Linda's voice as always, cause I'm a HUGE Rondstadt fan but gotta agree with Glenn, that Karla hits the subtleties so nicely on this one, and that piano, well it just chimes so well.

  43. i.... ....

    THE best version bar none.

    i.... ....

    imee7 ㅜㅏ

  44. d.... ....

Karla is a very talented song writer, but I'm sorry Linda Ronstadt really did the best version of this song on her album "Hasten Down the Wind"

    d.... ....

It depends on what you hear first and most. I listened to Linda's first once and then this before I got too attached to either. I prefer this one. I think Linda overcooks it. This is more subtle and more convincing for me.

    d.... ....

@durangorob Both versions are stand alone classics by themselves...

  45. 1.... ....

    Thank you for posting this.

  46. B.... ....

This is such a gorgeous song. The wonderful Dusty Springfield also did an equally amazing version on stage at The Royal Albert Hall in 1979.

  47. P.... G....

    You, CHILD are Blessed.

  48. s.... j....

And nuthin' can free me from this ball & chain....

  49. G.... L....

Thanks so much for sharing Karla Bonoff. She is my all time favorite songwriter & singer. She has truly inspired me for many years.

  50. m.... h....

linda brought a lot of talented singer/songwriters into the light...some vintage, some extreme country....and Karla Bonoff...just wonderful

  51. P.... G....

    Linda WHO???????

  52. J.... B....

I believe the correct lyrics are "I made up my mind I would leave today" not live today.

  53. F.... ....

Karla Bonoff is the mistress of the songwriting craft...I dont know of anyone who writes more beautiful melodies, or evokes such emotion with her lyrics....Now I have to say I prefer Linda Ronstadt(who has made a career out of covering Ms. Bonoff's songs)vocals, but I do enjoy listening to these songs as they were originally crafted.

  54. B.... ....

    oh songwriters like this...

  55. t.... g....

Linda made us aware of Karla back in `76, and Karla should have had a bigger career. But Linda`s version is sooo good!!!

  56. A.... ....

    My heart is broken

  57. B.... D....

It's no wonder this is the best recording of this song, after all, she wrote it.
I just found that out . Please, no "well DUH"s

  58. G.... B....

Wish I could see her on YouTube, performing Never Stop Her Heart..one of my favorites..maybe it's up here, but I can't find it..

  59. J.... F....

I wore this album out, literally, when I was a teen. Saw her tour with Jackson Browne in 1978, and bought the album the next day at Finders. Then we saw her solo in Toledo in 1979, when she had her second album out. What a great voice. Thank you, Linda Ronstadt, for singing her songs for the rest of us to enjoy -- and for helping to launch her career.

  60. J.... S....

what a beautiful song....was researching lyrics and I found this.....a band called The Kentucky Cow Tippers are playing our place this month and they play this song......nice

  61. d.... ....

Wouldn't it be "mind up my mind I would leave today"?

  62. s.... ....

    Beautiful! Listen to Bryndle too!

  63. K.... 4....

    Nice...
    With you eyes closed especially.

  64. s.... r....

@spinozareader lov lov lov this album, i mean cd.

  65. J.... L....

beautiful song, but i was introduced to this song with the alison krauss version so i enjoy that one more

  66. H.... Q....

    listen dusty singing the song

  67. B.... K....

She is a masterpiece in and of herself. I think she is truly the best love ballad songwriter ever. And of all the people who sing songs she's written, she sings them best. (I guess that makes me a pretty big fan, eh?)

  68. j.... ....

Such a talented songwriter. Karla has so many great singable songs. Always beautiful melodies and full of emotion. Love this classic 1977 album to bits!

  69. j.... ....

A great song and by far the best version!!! I heard with James Taylor and solo- a great and gifted lady!!!

  70. g.... ....

wish i'd gone to the show with her and James Taylor. Karla can do no wrong.

  71. H.... Q....

i perfer dusty springfield singing the song

  72. c.... ....

I first heard this song at a Ronstadt concert. Linda was plugging Karla big time! She told everybody they had to go out and buy Karla's record. She was right. I've been hooked on Karla ever since.

  73. J.... P....

I am 'of the 60's and learned of her when her first album came out. later saw her in Portland, OR in about 99. I believe no one speaks to the heart more than this wonderful lady, with a voice that says more than words and notes.

  74. s.... ....

I wish I'd heard this version before the more up-beat.
    Beautiful...
Will have to listen to it a few times before I get the other one out of my head.
    Thanks

  75. t.... ....

@cvte2 oops, my bad! she is alive and well -)

  76. t.... ....

what a fantastic song! she does it so well. after all, it is her song. rondstadt's version is very good, but not as vulnerable. may karla rest in peace.

  77. a.... ....

thank for your comment!! i can because i did like you^^

  78. s.... ....

    Akira

  80. b.... ....

I 1st heard Linda Ronstadt sing this. Didn't pick up a Karla Bonoff Lp till many years later. Then got all her LP's at used record stores, and the best of CD at my Library. Then the 1st Bryndle CD, which is fantastic!

  89. a.... ....

Ok I see. Thank you for your advice!!

  90. C.... R....

I love this song and appreciate that you put this up here. However, you have one line incorrect, I believe. It's "I made up my mind I would LEAVE today," not "live." Right?

  91. a.... ....

Thank you fror your nice comment!! akira

  92. s.... ....

Thank you for posting this hauntingly beautiful song, akira. So many times I listened to this album back in the 1970s, and this was the most powerful song on it. I am amazed and grateful to see it on youtube.
