Kansas - Curtain Of Iron Lyrics
The streets of the city are barren
All the windows and doors have been closed
As the night draws near
You can feel their fear
Their freedom is just an illusion
Can it all be true
What can one man do
[Chorus]
See the pages as they turn
Never will the children learn
Born as a prisoner in a curtain of iron
Never will the pages turn
The City of Gold's in the distance
Visions slowly fade
In this land of shade
[Chorus]
As the power grows, darkness spreading
Hope is still alive, though we're dreading
What the future holds, no more need to
Fear what all men face
Only good can win the race
Rumors speak of war, all the nations
Turmoil in the streets, tribulations
Now it's plain to see
All the prophecies are taking place
Only good can win the race
There are fragments of truth still remaining
And they bring them the light of the world
To this hope we cling
Till the bells will ring
See the pages as they turn
In their wisdom we will learn
Our bloody history soon will resolve
See the pages as they turn
In their wisdom we will learn
Free from the prison, a Curtain of Iron

In before the JoJo Fandom haha
I love this song and the album it came from! It is one of the albums that made me a dihard Kansas fan! I had the chance to work for Kerry and his band A.D. during the 80's and I can truly say he was a truly humble and talented man with a great personality.I wish I still had the pictures from that concert but they got lost during a move.
Kansas delving into prog metal, wonderful. Kerry Livgren predicted the Berlin wall coming down. Sweet violin outro, just so you know its Kansas. Outstanding, as usual.
Doesn't the back cover's guy's stereo look like a Show N' Tell?
The album's Digital Remaster is in the Classic Albums Collection with the Kirshner Rainbow Ribbon label emblazoned on it proudly!
Remembers the struggles of German Jews and The Nazi fear grip.
omg talk about great composition !
A disappointment from Kerry. He should have stayed away from the politically charged lyrics, as obviously they are not his strength.
You're not a Trump supporter are You? Because that would be what those losers would say.
Has this song every been played live before. If not, I would recommend it for the 2018 tour!! Carry on!!!
Another great overlooked album. Really liked Loner and Anything for You! Never missed a Kansas concert in my town 20+ times and even though Robbie, Steve, and Kerry are no longer there, Phil has done a fantastic job keeping Kansas alive. Highly recommend seeing them live!
this is a great song
A classic!
Steve Crocker Texas to Pomponesset non stop... Over the counter Haysma.
What an amazing intro!!!!!!
Not overlooked by me ... still love this album ... and have it on vinyl ....

ゴーギャン
awesome... happy to hear it again...
It IS a gem!!! Amazing build up to the peak at approx 5:22... Incredible vocal harmony with that powerhouse guitar right after. That part of the song stays in my head over and over...
Wonderful song.
among my favorites
Amazing musicians, great band, unfortunately i don't have time machine to go back in these amazing years.
These are the amazing years. Enjoy them, and see them today!
They sound today like they did back in the day even with only Rich and Phil as originals in the band....saw them Monday and was shocked how good they sound,
after certain incidents This album has been second graded. Stop Listen to this song. aaaawessome
+lukemanify after?!... heh@
amazing album
wow this song kicks ass
I haven't heard this for years. Some of Livgren's less cryptic lyrics, but I always loved that guitar riff at 3:25.
Not a riff is chords
awesomeness as well!!!
You appear to follow your posts, so I decided to "go digging." Do you have the inner sleeve with all the words and the picture on the flip side of the sleeve for this album?
I have the CD which has the lyrics and the back cover but that is all.
@rickyon
How do I get a picture to you?
Thanks for putting the back of the album up. Saved me from going downstairs and digging.
You're welcome!
@rickyon
Kansas most underated song one of my favourite
+evoeightyci The *BACK*!!! hehe! Freedom is just an illusion?!...
5:30 at the introduction of the violins, must be one of those historical musical moments. So perfectly fitting, yet so unexpected.
one of the last best albums that still had heavy rock -after that it was kansas waning years
Underrated is a term applies to many prog rock bands, but not this one!
This is pure liquid silver, awesome music.
I guess you're right that this was the last "true" Kansas album that featured the original lineup (Steve, Kerry, Robbie, Rich, Phil, & Dave). They certainly had a great run through the '70's. Rarely if ever had 6 such tallented musicians come together and produced such beautiful and unique music...

Is this song about the anti-Christian campaigns behind the iron cutain?
actually robbie didn't bail until 1983 before drastic measures and walsh was with the band until about mid 1981.
Robby left the band at the end of the VC tour, not AV.
That's Robby Steinhardt, the other lead vocalist and violinist of Kansas.
is that supposed to be steve walsh at 3:01?
No, that is Robbie on the lead.
right on
thanks for the info
thanks for info
Steve Walsh was with the band for the entire A/V tour. They did 50 dates, took off 2 months, did 12 dates, took off 3 months and then did the final 11 dates of the tour and final dates of the original 6 line-up. Not long after the end of the tour in late 1981 was when Walsh left the band.
He also did his first solo Schemer Dreamer too during this period as well.
I'm receiving a large number of Kansas shows in the near future and there is no telling what gems might be on these DVD's. One can only hope!
hey rickyon, we could be BLOOD brothers, I thought I was the only person on this planet that knew the song "APERCU"... I know must consider you my blood brother. may the music gods be with you forever!!!!!
@ToujoursLAmour I could not agree more.
Kerry is a very deep writer and composer. This song does double duty. It speaks to Kerry's new, at the time, conversion to Christianity and also the Berlin Wall. They had visited the wall earlier and you just had to know that Livgren would express his thoughts in song on the nsubject.
Actually Steve Walsh wasn't with the band after a few stops on their 1980s tour of this album. There was friction in the band over the musical direction of Livgren and Walsh and also over Kerry's more Christian influence in the song's lyrics. So videos and live recordings of any of these songs are rare if not available at all. Robbie bailed out at the end of this tour, so this was the last true classic Kansas album! I think the name Curtain of Iron was a veiled reference to sin in our lives!
amazing song....... yes yes it is
@Paganguy1 I shouldn't have to tell you how to be sane...
nothing can compare to music like this
Thumb's up if you totally dig this song.
I do totally! lol but I love this song second to relentless
Its my favorite Kansas Album!
@cooldudebailey use google you must find it there XD
I have searched high and low for a live recording of this song (let alone a video) and Apercu as well. So far no luck. But i'm not giving up.
I could see Proto-Kaw the Original line up of Kansas (The name in Kansaa Indian tongue means Original Kansas,BTW) Do this.
i am 13 and this is my music there is never any good music any more only like 4 people in my class of like 200 have heard of kansas LONG LIVE CLASSIC ROCK
this song is so epic that me and my friends named our band after it We are Curtains of Iron we have a facebook paege if you care (note we are still very early on so no songs with music yet)
You're welcome.
Yeah i got the same experience wtih music these days, but after listening a local radio at my country which mostly playing progressive rock, it changes me and my perspective about music, and one of my fav for eternity is Kansas. Thanks alot for the post :)
Jeez this is an epic masterpiece isn't it just? wow....
GREAT! Its always been my favorite from Audio Visions.
This is one of my favorites songs from my favorite band. I love the arrangement, the musicality, the singing, the performance, the outro with Phil and Dave clicking perfectly together, and mostly, I love Rich's "Meatwall" guitar tone at 3:25!
@stringcheese91 Right on! I'm 22 years older than you and I felt the exact same way when I was your age. The problem is you were handed a big bucket of corporate, cookie-cutter shit and you really have to dig to find great music. Don't ever stop searching though. It's so rewarding when you find great music like Kansas recorded.
This is a great classic from one of the best bands ever. The song is similar to Sparks of the Tempest from Point of Know Return.
I had this album on 8-track, and I played it over and over again for months when i first got it. Still one of my favorites. This song especially.
Kansas was the perfect mix of the refined prog rock and the kick-ass hard rock. It's a shame that they are really underrated, especially Livgren and Walsh. Livgren is a genius composer/lyricist, and Steve Walsh is one of the finest singers of his time.
They are FINALLY getting their just due with their new album and 40th Anniversary Leftoverture Tour.
You're not wrong
Was in high school 76-80 and Kansas was always my favorite band, no one else's favorite band in my circle of friends was Kansas, except me. Everyone back thens favorite bands were Floyd, Van Halen, Skynyrd, Purple, Bad Co, Zeppelin, Springsteen, Stones, etc. I always felt alone and kind of felt like an outcast because of this - but as time moved on and in the 2000s began reading the thousands of comments about Kansas on Youtube - I now feel validated and not alone anymore. Seeing all of these great and positive Kansas comments literally brings tears to my eyes. Thanks Youtube and thanks Kansas fans
@rivera0213
That's it! Saved me having to dig out the vinyl ;)
like the gentle giant-ism @ 4:25 ;)
How prophetic that we all got to see the Berlin Wall come down not too many years after this song was written. What made Kansas an even greater band than they already were just based on their musical talent was that they actually had meaningful & admirable messages in their lyrics... not too much of that going on in today's new mainstream music..
Best band ever. home town boy's.
Another prog jam (intro and again 3:56) highlighting the rhythm section. Phil's work on the ride is so sweet. Also, great bass work there.
5* Thank you for the great post
But the wall was very much standing in 1980/81 when the song had been written (if not earlier).
I love Rich Williams's "Meatwall" guitar tone in the middle and the end. Kansas III rules!
When I heard the words, tribulation, prophesy and win the race... I thought he was meaning that God had a hand in the fall of the wall.
It's wonderful that Steve gives 100% even though he didn't agree with the message.
yes, livegren and those boys were true genius- thanks for sharing, this album is not in my collection- greetings from norway
Walsh is GOD!!!
Yes, this is an awesome song!!! I love the lyrics!!! Thanks for sharing!!! Carry On!
Steve Walsh had such an amazing voice.
