Kansas - Belexes Lyrics

Oh, I cannot tell you to make up your mind
And gather together the best of your kind
The prophets have spoken the words of ill fate
Your childhood has ended you've taken the bait
You've got the power it's there deep inside
Just look around and you'll know what you've tried
So much relies on the course that you take
The fool and the wise man both burn at the stake-ah

Look at the heads buried deep in the sand
Hiding from evil made by their own hand
The prophets have spoken the words of ill fate
Your childhood has ended you've taken the bait
You've got the power it's there deep inside
Just look around and you'll know what you've tried
So much relies on the course that you take
The fool and the wise man both burn at the stake-ah

#magodeoz is a patetic copy of this song.

  2. R.... C....

I remember I was going to see Queen at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, but they cancelled and Kansas took their spot. I had never heard of them. I remember when they got ready to play they made a comment. The singer said," well we drove all night to get here. We don't have satin outfits to wear but I think your going to dig this. Man, they were so good! 1973?

  3. p.... ....

    Killer track!!!

  4. J.... H....

This is possibly Kansas’ hardest song to sing. The ah’s are freaking hard.

  5. F.... N....

Mago de Oz es una mala copia de esta cancion.

  6. L.... ....

    AND...the king of JAM!!!!!

  7. M.... B....

45 years later, it still rocks. What more can you say.

  8. J.... T....

the last guitar solo sounded like as if Kirk Hammett was featured in this song. still pretty cool though :)

It's a shame that this album can never be remastered. The original master copy was recorded over. It was common back then for record companies to reuse studio reel tapes once the vinyl was produced for any first recordings for new unknown bands, so the original unmixed version is lost forever. It was also common for studios to severely limit studio time for said new bands. What you hear on this album therefore, is essentially Kansas all playing together and nailing the entire album in ONE TAKE. From a musical perspective, when you consider the high level of difficulty in the material on this album, it is a real testament to the caliber of musicians they were.

  10. S.... R....

Tasty cut from an excellent album.

  11. T.... h....

    Dude that evil riffs!!! I,,l,

  12. d.... c....

first time I saw them was in 1976, at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago... so much talent...saw them again last year at the Joliet Fest in Illinois...only two original members left, but you wouldn't know it by hearing them...

Growing up it was a tight race between Kansas and Rush. I still believe Kansas is the better of the two. Steve Walsh kicks it in the ass. Great singer, keyboardist, and phenomenal performer. Kansas writing is as good as it gets with Kerry Livgren. He's a genius. Rock on Kansas

    w.... l....

Steve walsh was from st. Joseph missouri, I lived within a couple of miles from him, me at 18th & commercial st. Him near mason rd & south 22nd, many musicians, to many to count around the st Joe area, Steve's vocal ability was top notch to say the least "incredible" a work horse so to speak, can,t say enough good things about the original band "kansas" truely-"a miracle out of no where"!!

By far the most emotional Concert I ever attended, which encompasses about 100 in 8 different states and 4 countries was seeing these guys in the place of my birth, little 'ole Topeka Kansas, they tore paint off the walls!

    B.... B....

I saw them in Philadelphia at the Spectrum, (c.1977). I stole the cushion off the red seat, 12th row, floor. The 6'5" security guard at the door yelled out, "My man took his seat!" He laughed like hell. I just kept goin' and nobody stopped me. Very different world.

  18. P.... ....

Puto mago de oz de aquí se plagio el sonido de violin para su cagada poser de fiesta pagana.

  19. S.... A....

They played this the other night when I saw them. They mixed in a few bars of Lightnings Hand, it was incredible!

  20. B.... B....

when I was 15 in 75 I traded a Beach Boys 8-track for this album. Best trade I ever made.

    B.... B....

Congratulations friend, I would have done the same, Kansas is infinitely better ...

    B.... B....

Wait! Weren't you the putter in Caddyshack?!?

  21. C.... C....

  23. K.... G....

This is metal as fuck. Reminds me so much of Maiden.

    K.... G....

@Jeff Ghendar Glad someone gets me!

    K.... G....

I agree with you. I've been trying to get my band to cover this...the live version on Device-Voice-Drum is insanely awesome, and yes, metal as fuck!

    K.... G....

@Kenny Hensley Nice! If you and your band cover this, definitely message me, 'cause I'd love to hear it!

    K.... G....

This has a lot of metal influence in my opinion!

    K.... G....

Been a huge Kansas freak since 1976 and always considered Kansas the only true American prog rock band - that moniker has also gotten them branded as the red headed step child of bands like Genesis, Yes, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and other British prog bands. Their sound is uniquely American progressive rock with themes of Americana, Native Indigenous People, and the American West. Most of the British prog rock bands are heavy on keyboards but make no mistake about it they all jam with best of any heavy rock band, especially guitarist Steve Howe of Yes - that man can play guitar. As for Kansas I would say overall that they are harder than their British counterparts and I actually think Kansas would take your assessment of them as a hard rock band as a complement. Some Kansas tunes are clearly British style progressive, some are more American style progressive and some are a combination of both. But if you want Kansas's more heavy side, in addition to Belexes, check out these harder edged songs: Child Of Innocence, Stay out of Trouble, Sparks of the Tempest, What's on my Mind, Down the Road (lots of guitar here), Loner, and of course Carry on Wayward Son

  26. T.... V....

I finally got this album for Christmas on original vinyl!!!!!

Question: is it weird that a 14 year old collects and listens to original albums on vinyl?

    T.... V....

@kdragon7 Leftoverture was the first Kansas album that I got, then I found their debut album by looking them up on google to find out if they had made previous albums.

    T.... V....

Leftoverture sucks. First Kansas album is way better

    T.... V....

Yeah totally weird....pack them all up and send them my way !

    T.... V....

    No... not at all.

    T.... V....

No, it's freaking awesome, and it gives us old folks hope! = )

  27. E.... Q....

saw them live yesterday and they played this. sounds so awesome

    E.... Q....

+Erni Vedder saw them live in '95, 0.7 miles from my house.

    E.... Q....

    wow so awesome :-D

  28. G.... B....

I remember back in the early 90's, I bought a few used LP's including this one and Song for america. I had never heard Belexes before and took to it like fish to water. Also loved the Bringing it Back to mexico cover. I had never heard the original version that was written by JJ Cale?

  29. D.... D....

Yeah, I saw Kansas in 1975 qt the Michigan Palace - 200 fans, warm up Hot Tuna. Them were the days. Detroit was rock show Mecca.

    D.... D....

Dee Donner Ramone Yes, Michigan has always been the state of Prog. people.

  30. D.... D....

Haven't heard this in 39 years! Used to listen to a buddy's basement after a tough day at Detroit Redford High! Go Huskies.

Bring back so many memories of my car and a Clarion 8 track stereo w/ 6x9 speakers... Awesome back then... :)

  33. n.... ....

yes, it's called "The Tragic Prelude" and was painted by John Steuart Curry

  34. D.... S....

    @xanomage

Kansas is an amazing band. If you want to hear a guy plan an organ, Rick Wakeman who used to be with Yes. There is this one video up (or at least it used to be) of him playing extremely fast (just him) live. Then there's Ray Manzarek of the Doors.

  35. J.... ....

@Damocules I already googled it and all i got were links to the lyrics of this song and similar videos. THAT'S WHY I'M ASKING HERE. DUH!

  40. k.... ....

    What does "belexes" mean?

    k.... ....

It doesn't have a meaning. They used to make up words for the song names, and this is one example.

    k.... ....

    kattavia92dva
He right. Kerry Livgren up until the second album used to make up words for songs and poems. It was mainly in the pre Kansas days with the band name Proto-kaw. So no meaning what so ever. Sorry

  41. A.... W....

Kansas is classical music you can headbang to!
    Def one of my favorites!!

  42. B.... ....

I wonder why kansas doesn't have more hits, they're so talented and amazing, I'm gonna start listening to them a lot more.

  43. j.... ....

This really brings out some deep emotions for me. Kansas was the band for myself and my closest friends in high school. We used to see them every time we could. The first time was at the Villanova Field house in Feb. 1976 when I was fifteen. I saw a vid of Icarus from that concert listed on Youtube and was afraid to listen to it for fear that it would not be as good as I remembered it. Boy was I wrong! It is fabulous. Kansas was a great band. They never disappointed at a live show in the day.

  44. T.... ....

soooooo underrated, every memeber of Kansas is really

  45. D.... ....

    KANSAS NUMBER ONE

  46. r.... ....

it's a character named John Brown from the Tragic Prelude book by John Steuart Curry.
    checked it on wiki

  47. r.... ....

not really, there were already more powerful albums and even much more complex albums from other earlier prog artists, like Yes, Genesis or ELP, yet i think Kansas has its own niche right up there with them, in any case, they were among the best since the start, it drives me mad these guys are so underrated

  48. p.... ....

This album was the best of all, so unique and raw at the time.

  49. p.... ....

Me too. Finally owned this album at age 16 in 1975 (one year after release). An absolute classic!

  50. t.... ....

    john brown the abolitionist?

    t.... ....

there.. Damn Skippy Brother, the Muriel is in the Capital Building and is like 50 feet high

    t.... ....

Yes. One man's terrorist is another man's hero. You see the A and the O on the pages of that book and you can't deny. Once you know, you can't deny Him.

  51. G.... ....
