Kamakawiwo'ole, Israel - Hawai'i '78 Lyrics

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawai'i
Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawai'i

[English translation:
"The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness"]

If just for a day our king and queen
Would visit all these islands and saw everything
How would they feel about the changes of our land

Could you just imagine if they were around
And saw highways on their sacred grounds
How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each other's eyes
As they would start to realize
That our people are in great great danger now
How would they feel would their smiles be content then cry

Cry for the gods cry for the people
Cry for the land that was taken away
And then yet you'll find Hawai'i

Could you just imagine if they came back
And saw traffic lights and railroad tracks
How would they feel about this modern city life

Tears would come from each other's eyes
As they would start to realize
That our land is in great great danger now

All the fighting that the king had done
To conquer all these islands now there's condominiums
How would he feel if he saw Hawai'i nei
How would he feel would he smile be content then cry

Cry for the gods cry for the people
Cry for the land that was taken away
And then yet you'll find Hawai'i

Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawai'i
Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono o Hawai'i

I had the honor of living on Oahu in 1957, 58, 59 when I was a child. This was before it was a State. We left in late May 1959 which is when Iz was born. As I was going he was coming. I feel so connected to him. This haunting song is amazingly powerful. We miss you Brother. 😥 Bless you for your legacy of music. 💕💕💕

I was just introduced to this song by my Hawai'i native girlfriend. And it has brought some surprising emotions to the surface.

The "United States of America" decisively ran over numerous First Nations in its drive to expand its influence. As sad as it is to say, Hawai'i got off lightly compared to some on the continent. Driven from all their ancestral lands, forced to change religion upon penalty of death, and more. As the child of those who reaps the benefit of these changes, I am sickened and saddened at what happened. The tears of one man cannot change what has been done, yet I must say this.

I am sorry. From the bottom of my heart, I wish things could have been different. I am sorry.

    O.... ....

Good for you bruddah. Shes got a good one! Make her introduce you to our food. You'll live 10 extra years. I'm not even kidding.

  27. S.... E....

would love to see the hawaiians be given one of the main islands to return to their ancestral way of life and preserve native tongue and culture. Rest in peace Brudda Iz.

    S.... E....

Steven Elms Niihau is technically being used as that, the natives still mostly live like they did in the past in fact the entire island is off limits to everyone except for the Niihau people and the Robinson family who owns it and strives to protect it

    S.... E....

    give em all back

  28. B.... H....

I heard this song in 2005 while staying the the Marriott at Ko olina. Everyday the hotel would play the song in the afternoon. I always though it had a beautiful melody and was such a fitting song for Hawai'i It took me ten years to find the song again, it makes me tear up every time I play it now. It's like an old friend that I have rediscovered.

    B.... H....

yet, this beautiful song is a complaint about Condos and Hotels (such as with the Marriott) saturated on IZ's island of Hawaii

    B.... H....

Yes, I am crying now listening again...we were flying to Kauai the first time we heard his song. Then we took a boat ride around the Napali Coast and they played this same song and again I cried...we all have IZ's CD...we love his music and songs.

    B.... H....

And yet these are the exact kind of people who are responsable for destroying hawaii, but hey they love the music so that makes them forgivable....?....cockroaches

  29. T.... B....

Just returned from Hawaii, this song haunted our trip, no guilt, just haunting. Time does not stand still i'm afraid. God Bless.

  30. A.... W....

Hawaii belongs to the Hawaiians not the damned government. Fuck the government.

    A.... W....

We have all had our land taken by the damned government.

    A.... W....

You guys realize... Hawaii voted into the US gov in 1959 right? meaning even after the fall of the monarchy they didn't simply dominate and forced change. People actually VOTED into the US, we're the 50th state.

    A.... W....

No Tammy, you were the invaders

  31. A.... S....

    this song kills me....very sad

  32. m.... ....
