Julie Fowlis - Dh'èirich Mi Moch, B' Fheàrr Nach Do Dh'èirich Lyrics

Dh'èirich mi moch
Dh'èirich mi moch
B'fheàrr nach d' dh'èirich
Mo chreach lèir na chuir a-mach mi
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

Bha ceò sa bheinn
Bha ceò sa bheinn
Is uisge frasach
'S thachair orms' a' ghruagach thlachdmhor
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

Bheir mi dhut fìon
Bheir mi dhut fìon
'S gach nì a b' ait leat
Ach nach èirinn leat sa mhadainn
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

'Nighean nan gamhna
'Nighean nan gamhna
Bha mi ma' riut
Anns a' chrò is càch nan cadal
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

An daoidh gheal donn
An daoidh gheal donn
Rug i mac dhomh
Ged is fuar a rinn i altram
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

Bha laogh mo laoidh
Bha laogh mo laoidh
Ri taobh cnocan
Gun teine, gun sgàth, gun fhasgadh
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

A Mhòr a ghaoil
A Mhòr, a ghaoil
Till ri d' mhacan
'S bheir mi goidean breagha breac dhut
Hill ò bha hò
Hill ò bha hò

My sister was killed a month ago. I cannot find words to describe the grief. My mate sent me an email 2 weeks ago and today I realised there was an attachment with it. It was a link to Julie Fowlis' "O Sister" You Tube clip. I've just been sitting here mesmerised by this woman's beautiful voice and music in song after song. It is truly music for the spirit and soul. All I can say is thank you so very much.

Thanks for the special moments your music has given me. Usually when I'm driving through the hills of Connemara to get my groceries in Clifden. Even your range has gotten better if that was even possible. As an Irish man I can humbly say that, for me, you are the finest traditional singer alive. Constantly honing your craft. "Put Julie Fowlis on Daddy" ....my wee daughters.

Many of my ancestors (on both sides of my family) came from the Highlands, and this song makes me feel the connection I have to them quite acutely, even though I don't speak any Scots Gaelic beyond a couple of phrases and words I picked up from stuff on Youtube. What a haunting song...

  60. F.... P....

    Art that reflects soul.

    F.... P....

You defined the role of art.

  61. R.... K....

This song would be nice if there wasn’t pitch correction and auto tune in it. It’s overproduced. Fuck that shit.

  62. R.... -....

Simple and wonderful, both singing and string arrangement. Thank you, Julie Fowlis and all who worked with you.

  63. G.... M....

So beautiful and sad. Thank you, Ms. Fowlis. Hearing Gaelic sung always evokes deep feelings in me. My father had lost the Gaelic but was able to remember a few lines when he sang us lullabies. His ancestors were from North Uist. “Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland/ And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.”

The greatest mass migration in our history has taken place.
    The newcomers are lawfully here.
They have the jobs, live in the houses, use the NHS.
Their children are in the schools...

When I was a Revolutionary Marxist, we were all in favour of as much immigration as possible.

It wasn't because we liked immigrants, but because we didn't like Britain. We saw immigrants - from anywhere - as allies against the staid, settled, conservative society that our country still was at the end of the Sixties.

Also, we liked to feel oh, so superior to the bewildered people - usually in the poorest parts of Britain - who found their neighbourhoods suddenly transformed into supposedly 'vibrant communities'.

If they dared to express the mildest objections, we called them bigots...

Julie Fowlis - Dh’èirich mi moch, b' fheàrr nach do dh’èirich

I got up early, it would have been better not to
    I got up early
    I got up early –
it would have been better not to have got up,
it was my pain and distress that sent me out.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

There was mist on the hill
There was mist on the hill
    and showery rain
and a pleasant maid hapened upon me
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

    I’ll give you wine,
    I’ll give you wine
and everything that you'd find pleasing
but I won’t get up with you in the morning.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

    Girl of the stirks1,
    Girl of the stitks
    I was together with you,
in the fold when the others were asleep.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

    The fair brown wicked2 person,
    The fair brown wicked person,
    she bore me a son,
though is was coldly that she nursed him
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

The darling child3 of my song,
The darling child of my song
    was beside a hillock
without fire, without protection, without shelter.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

    Mòr4, my love,
    Mòr, my love,
    return to your little son
and I’ll give you a beautiful speckled band5.
    Hill ò va hò
    Hill ò va hò.

Being only genetically Celtic from Boudica's Iceni was not good enough for me. The more time I spend with the Irish and Scottish the more I regain the beautiful culture our ancestors lost with brother nations on our borders. So powerful! Celts must be resilient. The Saxons tried to wipe us out but they must have failed with the more northern tribes in King's Lyn etc. and there are pockets of Celts left everywhere who have forgotten their Celtic music etc and who think they are English. I wish I could re-educate them on a lost culture that is so enriching when you experience it!!!

    C.... C....

Casey Casey awe fantastic, im more scot gælic and welsh, i find english ppl super rude and patronising 😂 idk why but hay, my family came from skene and pirthshire in scotland the skene family side moved down into northern wales and then moved to the south coast, my mum was origonally gon a be named mafanwæ, me and both my sisters have celtic names, and we try are best to sticl to are roots, we all wear plaid, and love are roots, none of us can talk gælic tho coz we was brought up in england

You are right! I always found the Irish people here more polite! The Saxons were like Mongols in Russia; they only won because they learned Roman tactics from their time working as mercenaries in the Roman army. I would argue that our Celts were more advanced and civilized.

    C.... C....

I love the tartan colours but I think that kilts are Scythian; Scotland is named after Scythia in southern Ukraine. There are also Celts there.

    C.... C....

I am working with the Irish society to get the Gaelic language club moved into central Liverpool. Do you like the Irish Celtic brothers?

  88. G.... M....

I love Gaelic, a pity that we have lost ours after being conquered by Rome.

The Celtic experience has been one of aching. Aching for the traditional life, lived in traditional places, denied by Romans and Britons alike. Celts arise and take back your Culture and Tradition! The Devil's Millenium (Britain's Reign) is almost over and spirituality can displace base materialism once again!

  92. B.... B....

    Breathtaking beauty. Thank you.

    Come back Irish,
l have kept your place warm.
l have kept your name engraved on my heart.
What do you think l forgot you Irish?
    l canna do that !
l love with a heart of gold given to me by St. Patrick ... to love and welcome all Irish children, to fill the empty place you left for me to guard.
My prayer for your return Irish child was heard by God, who watched over you... to bring you home to me... to teach you... there is no place like home.
