Judy Collins - Sons Of Lyrics

Sons of the sea, sons of the saint
Who is the child with no complaint
Sons of the great or sons unknown
All were children like your own

The same sweet smiles, the same sad tears
The cries at night, the nightmare fears
Sons of the great, sons unknown
All were children like your own

Sons of tycoons, or sons from the farms
All of the children ran from your arms
Through fields of gold, through fields of ruin
All of the children vanished too soon

In towering waves, in walls of flesh
Amid dying birds trembling with death
Sons of tycoons, sons from the farms
All of the children ran from your arms

Sons of your sons, sons passing by
Children were lost in lullaby
Sons of true love, sons of regret
All of your sons you can never forget

Some build the roads, some wrote the poems
Some went to war, some never came home
Sons of your sons, sons passing by
Children were lost in lullaby

Lovely the melody, but she makes child-rearing, and the aftermath, to be a mournful thing. Sometimes it is, but generally, having kids and watching them grow and go their ways is a happy and exciting part of life.

Franklin P. Uroda Remember a) she didn't write the song and b) she lost a son in a tragic death. The pain still lingers for her. We all suffer, that's our human condition but the loss of a son is probably the most painful thing a mother can experience .

DePaul, not just losing a son, but a child in general. Paying tribute to males in this song/poem, and rightly so. Just tears me up 'some went to war some never came home.' All those sons running from their parents arms to life. One second a sweet boy, the next killed in an un-Godly war. Something to remember with this current President in office. He is itching to get us into a war, our sons and daughters can be the victims of his lunacy.

  8. T.... K....

This song was written by Jacques Brel he wanted to explain : Whatever the origin of one child , he is exactly like yours with the same innocent. It's only after longtime after...
This is not about War it's exaclty to avoid the wars....

The melody, however, was all Charles Trenet, from "Coin de Rue."
