Judy Collins - Song For Marion Lyrics

Dear lord be good to me, the sea is so wide
Dear lord be good to me, my boat is so small

Oh God who lives beyond the place of thunder and rainbows
God who blows the western wind and calms the raging waves
God who shakes the mountains and pours fire on the sea
God who blows the howling wind, take care of me

Show you heart and show your face
Do not let me fall from grace

Dear lord be good to me, the sea is so wide
Dear lord be good to me, my boat is so small

I may not have the clothes of silk, or money of silver
I may not have a home made out of marble or clay
I know I have no armor to protect me from the storm
Oh God whose power burns the sun, please keep me warm

Show you heart and show your face
Do not let me fall from grace

Let me see the radiance of sun upon dark clouds
Let me see the silver dancing stars
Let me see the moon as she dances in your sky
Let me see your face amid the crowds

As the sun can rise at dawn up from the cloudy sea
As the day can break form darkest night
Let me find the rainbows end that follow the thunder
Through my tears against the wind teach me to begin again

Show you heart and show your face
Do not let me fall from grace

Dear lord be good to me, the sea is so wide
Dear lord be good to me, my boat is so small

    Who's listening to this 2020?

  2. S.... S....

I have the album which this cut is from. Living by Judy Collins is where the song can be found. Ry Cooder is featured on the album. A really talented guitar player.

  3. S.... B....

    Such a beautiful song!

  4. R.... V....

Judy Collins really did have a beautiful voice and this song is so moving. I've not heard it before.........thanks for posting.

  5. s.... ....

I have always loved this song. First heard on KLOS FM in Los Angeles in the mid 1970s while in seventh grade. Gorgeous singing and background chorus. I played this as an into song at my mother's memorial service-it so embodied her spirit and attitude. Thank you for posting, and thank you Judy Blue Eyes!

  6. J.... B....

Peut-il y avoir un refrain plus teinté de nostalgie tout en étant joyeux? Vous m'avez fait découvrir cette chanson et je la réécoute souvent ici, merci, mais avant tout merci Judy Collins :)

  8. G.... W....

I remember coming on YouTube years ago, looking for this song and not finding it. Thanks for finally posting it. Such a voice and thought-provoking lyrics.

    G.... W....

Her voice is good to the soul. Thank you.

  9. R.... G....

I was singing back up for Judy on this song, along with a group called the Big Sur Choir. It was great fun recording with her. Haven't listened to it in years. Pretty nice.

Knew of Judy because of " Send in the Clowns". Not heard this song before. Really beautiful, thanks for posting.
Please listen to " 9 Clifton road the writers ". Thank you.

  14. j.... ....

My 4th grade music teacher loaned me her tape of this song (1971) and I started to identify with music - the beginning of a lifelong musical career & love.

  15. C.... ....

Saw her in 1975. Saw her in 2010. Her appeal is simply timeless. What a voice.

  16. s.... ....

I simply love this song! I first heard it on KLOS FM in Los Angeles. Late at nigh in high school (meaning midnight on a special show). One of the most melodic and simply moving songs I have heard. Everyone with whom I shared this song asks me, ..."Who is this?" .... 'Where do I find it?". And these comments are from people half my age. Judy's lilting voice, with a piano and slide guitar, and some fantastic (is it audience?) backup makes this her best effort ever. I played this at my Mother's memorial service as a prelude, and there was both smiles and tears. Just so evocative in its clarity and simple straightforward message. 'We all have stormy weather...The sun shines through and we're together....I''ll be your friend right through to the end."
Lovely. thank you for posting this. I can now send this to friends everywhere.

    s.... ....

Thank you for your comment. Of course while I was reading the song played again. Nice. :-)

    V.... ....

Hello VelvetKate, this is one song that I like to sing along with Judy. :-) You do the same.

  19. D.... ....

Simply put, ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER. One of the few actually written by "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes" Judy Collins! ( Judy doesn't write too many tunes but when she does they are winners, like Joan Baez and Emmylou Harris).LOVE and LOVE and MORE LOVE!!!! FOREVER!!!!!!!

  20. z.... ....

I wish this song was more famous. It's such a beautiful classic folk song.

    z.... ....

@Bislindo Thank you for sharing this so we could all enjoy it. The lyrics are good, but what I really love are the harmonies. :)

    z.... ....

    @deepriver4
That's right! And a guy can easily fall in love with this lovely Judy.  :-)

    z.... ....

I TOTALLY AGREE! The legendary late and great free-form disc jockey from WNEW fm and WFUV.ORG in NYC , Pete Fornatale used to play this SONIC GEM a lot!

    z.... ....

  21. .... E....

Bislindo thank you so much for this clear song! appreciated! :)

  22. M.... ....

Anyone remember when Judy was a regular on Sesame Street?  She actually performed this song on the show.

  23. A.... M....

I 1st heard this song in 1977. I was a very naive 21 yr old kid.  I'd left an abusive husband, became a single mother, lost my job & felt I'd hit the bottom of the bottom. I stayed with a friend I loved dearly & the last night I was there she picked up her guitar & played me a song that just wrapped itself around my heart & wouldn't let go. She told me things would get better & they did. It was years later that I heard this song & found out that it was Judy Collins. I'm very glad you put it on YouTube & I just happened to find it. I got it on vinyl but vinyl went out. Fortunately, my friend wrote out the music & chords & I've picked up my guitar & am playing it. My friend was "like a rainbow coming around the bend." Thanks Bislindo!  And Joycie...thank-you for being my friend!

    A.... M....

    keep it vinyl is back.

    A.... M....

Andy M I love hearing people's stories from the 70s. Bless ya.

    A.... M....

Thanks...things were so much simpler then...

    A.... M....

That's a fairly common perception, but it's actually wrong. (Trust me, I lived through it.) There was tremendous change going on, and it was being met with violent resistance and also being furthered by violent means--and I mean literally. IIRC, there were more bombings in the US in the 70s than in any other decade, between the Weather Underground, FALN and various freelancers. The authorities also had frequent recourse to violent repression.

Less spectacularly, but more pervasively perhaps, changing gender roles and social norms proved very difficult for many to navigate, with severe stresses on family life resulting.

I know that's not how it necessarily looks in media--"That 70's Show," anyone?--but it was a difficult and turbulent time, even if a lot of us boomers remember it fondly because, well, we were young then!

    A.... M....

    Very very nice!!

  24. T.... L....

  38. W.... B....

This really is a good example of why David Crosby wrote "Suite Judy Blue Eyes " for Judy Collins

  39. i.... ....

ohmygod this song is so relaxing ^_____^

  40. s.... ....

It is so beautiful to see all thumbs up. 92 and counting...

  41. l.... ....

Does this remind anyone of Range Life by Pavement? (except of course, pre-dating it..)

  42. d.... ....

SF in the 80s: we sang the chorus every morning at "morning circle" in a slightly different arrangement as our elementary school anthem - the whole K-5 school in two large concentric circles belting it out! had no idea this was an actual song until my fiancee & i heard it on Girls. gutted me, in the best way! thank you for sharing this - i'm linking the video to all my "old school" friends' facebook pages for their own blast of Morning Circle and the good ol' days ;)

  43. m.... b....

I ordered THE BEST OF JUDY COLLINS cd!!!!

  44. w.... ....

Love this song! Thanks so much for posting!
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:20

  49. P.... ....

    I'm glad you liked it!

  50. P.... ....

That's true, it was (is) quite irritating when some beautiful songs couldn't be found (example: Prince) or were deleted by YouTube a few days after they were posted. What can we do?! Keep fighting and sharing. Thank you for the information about the album "Living". Talking about some old songs you can find "In my life", from The Beatles, in this beautiful voice (Judy) from 1966 here (YouTube). Worth listening to. Bis

  51. D.... C....

Sadly, many of Judy's songs are not available here on YouTube. There are thousands of artists whose music is being lost because the record corporations delete these music posts as fast as people put them up. All most of us are doing is trying to share the music and pass it on. Nobody is making any money off of this. We all do this because we love the songs and the artists who made them.
By the way, this song was first released on Judy's "Living" album which was released in November 1971

  52. S.... S....

    Wow...so beautiful!

  53. P.... ....

You're very welcome. I hope you can listen to this beautiful song with a good sound. It's better if you play it loud and sing it at the same time!
And you can easily find its lyrics if you search the Net.
    Enjoy! Bis

  54. P.... F....

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! I too had searched and searched for this song on YouTube and always left disappointed, no more!

  55. P.... ....

Thank you Mara, I know that. Anyone searching for "Open the door" will get this as a possible choice. For months this song was not on YouTube so I was tired of waiting and... here it is. I sang this song 5 minutes ago. And I'm looking at my brother's guitar. She (Judy) is a good influence.
Now I hope our YouTube does not remove her from here. Bis

  56. M.... K....

Glad you like her. She's a lovely person as well as a great singer. Alternative title is Open the door if you didn't know that. A youTube search for that will yield a result as late as this year.
