Judy Collins - Morocco Lyrics

I dreamed that I saw you once down in Morocco
Your clothes were so old they were new
You spoke to the Bedouins in their own language
Of silver and crimson and blue
They said that your singing had altered their vision
And yet nothing really had changed
The dust from the desert rose up from your eyelids
You said you had conquered the chains

The white wind around us, as we stood there talking
Was blowing the stars from the sky
I said make all the beauty you did long ago
And the dervishes whirled while you cried
You said ‘Hold me against you, the weather is calling
My mind is the color of stone’
And I wrapped the green silk around your thin body
And knew you would never come home

The wind and the sun and the sky in your eyes
Was driving you mad I could see
And in any language I knew they were saying
The future was cutting us free

We walked in the desert, your hands were like velvet
You told me the reason you’d stayed
All of the women whose hearts had been broken
Stood naked and cool in the shade
The men in the village were called to their worship
Their colors had started to fade
The shelter of heaven had lifted forever
Their eyes turned the color of jade

The wind and the sun and the sky in your eyes
Was driving you mad I could see
And in any language I knew they were saying
The future was cutting us free

I left to fly back to the place I was sleeping
Where all of my dreams had been lost
I wrote your name down on the back of a postcard
And finally I counted the cost
The demons and devils, the saints and the angels
Had gathered to show me the view
And all of the tears that had come when I met you
Were shining and bright as the dew

The wind and the sun and the sky in your eyes
Was driving you mad I could see
And in any language I knew they were saying
The future was cutting us free. Free, free, free, free.

This is quite a beautiful song. I want to sing along with her but it will take quite a while to get the lyrics down. The other song on this cd that is incredibly beautiful is Cactus Tree. This is a great album.

Thank you for your beautiful words! And I understand what you mean. The Adele generation isn't connected to struggle the way our generation was, and so their music doesn't fully describe the human prism the way Judy, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, and the other greats, were able to. Commerce and clothing seem to be used as a drug to prevent political awareness, and tend to create a sense of isolation and fear, reflected in the music which has very bland prose, compared to this.

New singers such as Adele are wonderful...but there is something about a Judy Collins that transcends that greatness. Collins is in a class of her own. A most beautiful supernatural talent. A voice of an angel for certain. Her vocals are ageless. No matter how angry I get Judy Collins' voice calms me like no alcohol or drug could ever do. It is so comforting to hear something new like this track -- it's a journey to listen through headphones. I like Adele, but I hope she learns from this.

I do share your opinion; Judy seems to have got some voice strength back and it reminds me of the " Both Sides Now " period

This is...magnificient. She hasn't lost a trace of her beautiful vocals. She went through some years of lame songs that were always sung well but just didn't produce anything new and exciting. But this...this is the Judy Collins that I remember. It has that magic. Looking forward to actually buying this CD and once again seeing the marvelous and beautiful Ms Collins in NY.

I've had the privilege of seeing Judy Collins in concert so many times I can't count anymore and, strange it may seem, but I've felt her music, her presence in my life since the mid-60's. Judy's music is her gift, to herself and to us. Song after song, show after show, she takes us on her journey and all the time, she "holds the mirror." I've have been following these particular YouTube postings for years and want to thank you taking the time and effort of bringing these concert and intervie
