Judy Collins - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues Lyrics

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez
And it's Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs
When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outa you

Now if you see Saint Annie
Please tell her thanks a lot
I cannot move
My fingers are all in a knot
I don't have the strength
To get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor
Won't even say what it is I've got

Sweet Melinda
The peasants call her the goddess of gloom
She speaks good English
And she invites you up into her room
And you're so kind
And careful not to go to her too soon
And she steals your voice
And leaves you howling at the moon

Up on Housing Project Hill
It's either fortune or fame
You must pick up one or the other
Though neither of them are to be what they claim
If you're lookin' to get silly
You better go back to from where you came
Because the cops don't need you here
And man they expect the same

Now all the authorities
They just stand around and boast
How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms
Into getting up and leaving his post
And picking up Angel who
Just arrived down here from the coast
Who looked so fine at first
But left looking just like a ghost

I started out on burgundy
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me
When the game got rough
But it was all a big joke
There was nobody even there to bluff
I'm going back to New York City
I do believe I've had enough

Never heard this version before. It‘s just great. Love it. what a voice.

  2. 1.... ....

Deena Webster does the best cover of this I've heard.

  3. J.... ....

original orchestration and and beautiful voice nostalgic!

  4. M.... i....

Her first 5 albums make me wanna go back in time to that era. I think it was a wonderful time to live, at least every "hippie" I know over 70 years old say so!

  5. C.... C....

One of my favorite Dylan songs and singers from my long lost youth.

  6. J.... B....

    WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 74yo Aussie fan.

  7. C.... C....

Great Dylan song sung by a great artist

  8. e.... f....

Oh Judy Blue Eyes. Nobody did it like you...

  9. L.... ....

Love the song. Always liked Judy Collins. Not a fan of this version. The energy is all wrong.

    L.... ....

My thoughts exactly. Judy's beautiful voice is often so angelically choirgirl pure it makes her delivery soulless.

  10. C.... T....

I haven't heard this in a few years. I had forgotten how great it is. I'm not kidding when I say that this is one of my all time favorite covers.

  11. D.... A....

One of the most versatile singers ever Love you Ms Judy I was in High School
    when this album arrived. 1966

  12. J.... V....

one of the best arranged songs ever.....Listen to judy and this song since I was a little girl...My dream was to sing like her

  13. a.... ....

+Steven Carinci South and West Bronx, but now living in the land of my dreams, Southern California.

+Bronxboy47 Benny Blanco, from the Bronx!

    B.... ....

    +Steven Carinci ???

  15. t.... ....

The sparse arrangement that builds is a rather unique interpretation of this song. In my Dylan covers playlist with versions by Barry McGuire, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry-- and a REALLY bad one by Gordon Lightfoot!

    Try Deena Webster's version...
Agree on Gordon Lightfoot's version, it's not good. Linda Ronstadts version is good as is Neil Youngs. My favourite though is Deena Webster's

    t.... ....

Nina Simone's cover of this is awesome

  16. S.... S....

The whole album is brilliant too - way ahead of its time in terms of interpretation, quality song writing and superb individual arrangements.

  17. c.... ....

One of the best covers of any Dylan song, IMHO; hauntingly lyrical, completely unlike Dylan's own version.

    c.... ....

Well, Nina Simone was pretty good also, but both did a superb job in their own style.

  18. f.... ....

    Enormous eyes.

  19. k.... ....

Great song, thanks for posting it; from the vinyl too, so doesn't hurt your ears: Been looking for this for a while.

  20. J.... ....

Well, I started out on burgundy, but soon hit the harder stuff.....

  21. C.... ....

The Dylan song from Highway 61 Revisited??? Haven't heard his version in... 45 years?!? A different, lighter version here. Many thanks Johnson28316, and the Nate@meltzerboy!

  22. J.... ....

    Love this song!

  23. J.... C....

Amazing Amazing song! It takes me back to the days I was stationed in the Azores feeling tremendously homesick (1967,71)!
