Judy Collins - Famous Blue Raincoat Lyrics

It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening.
I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record.
Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?
Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without Lili Marlene
And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.
Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see Jane's awake
She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.
If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.
Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear

Judy Collins Famous Blue Raincoat Comments

I like this better than Cohen's...
The fact that it's a female singing "And Jane came by...."

  2. M.... P....

This version is certainly closer to Cohen's original but I prefer Baez live version with a cello and her guitar both crying out all the pain Cohen put into this so wonderful song.

This is an amazing version of this song. Her voice is like a bell. I was thinking it couldn't be done better than by Cohen, but this is truly something else.

Great rendition, beautiful voice...but Cohen's Live version in London ('Songs from the Road') 2009 is awesome!

Judy Collins has an amazing voice and I love her works, and this performance does have her style. However for this song I like other versions better. Tori Amos has a live and a studio version of it, both on youtube, both intimate and more emotional. The first version of this song I heard was by Jennifer Warnes who has an amazingly powerful voice and a wonderful sax accompaniment.

Yes, Cohen's versions are very different.

This live album made by Judy Collins in the 1970's captures the beauty of her voice better than any other IMO. Thanks again for sharing it!

Ah, Inspector Columbo. Peter Falk. I used to watch that show. He always wore a trench coat (raincoat). I appreciate your comment very much. It's nice to know when someone likes a song I posted. If you haven't come across my upload of Judy Collins' version of Leonard Cohen's song,"Dress Rehearsal Rag" I think you'll enjoy it. Best wishes to you. - Joe

Well, it reminds me of " Inspecteur Columbo's famous raincoat ... ".
Great song so well sung ! It is, of course among Judy's songs from Leonard Cohen on her recent CD.
    *******
    Best wishes
