Judy Collins - Dress Rehearsal Rag Lyrics
Got up sometime in the afternoon
And you didn't feel like much
You said to yourself, "Where are you, golden boy
Where is your famous golden touch?"
All the elephants lie down
I thought you were the crown prince
Of all the wheels in Ivory town
Look at your body now
Where there's nothing much to say
And a bitter voice in the mirror says
"Hey prince, you need a shave"
Now if you can manage to get
Why don't you try unwrapping
A stainless steel razor blade?
That's right, it's come to this
It's come to this
And wasn't it a long way down?
And wasn't it a strange way down?
There's no hot water
And the cold is running thin
Well, what do you expect
From the kind of places you've been living in?
Don't drink from that cup
It's all caked and cracked along the rim
That's not the electric light, my friend
That is your vision that is dim
Cover up your face with soap, there
Now, you're Santa Claus
And you've got an A for anyone
Who will give you his applause
I thought you were a racing man
Ah, but you couldn't take the pace
That's a funeral in the mirror
And it's stopping at your face
That's right, it's come to this
It's come to this
And wasn't it a long way down?
And wasn't it a strange way down?
Once there was a path
And a girl with chestnut hair
And you spent the summers
Picking all the berries that grew there
There were times she was a woman
There were times she was a child
As you held her in the shadows
Where the raspberries grow wild
And you climbed the highest mountains
And you sang about the view
And everywhere you went
Love went along with you
That's a hard one to remember
It makes you clench your fist
And the veins stand out like highways
All along your wrist
And yes, it's come to this
It's come to this
And wasn't it a long way down?
Wasn't it a strange way down?
You can still find a job
Go out and talk to a friend
On the back of every magazine
There are coupons you can send
Why don't you join the Rosicrucians?
They will give you back your hope
You can find your love in diagrams
In a plain, brown envelope
But you've used up all your coupons
Except the one that seems
To be tattooed on your arm
Along with several thousand dreams
Now Santa Claus comes forward
That's a razor in his mitt
And he puts on his dark glasses
And he shows you where to hit
And then the cameras pan
The stand in stuntman's

Judy Collins Dress Rehearsal Rag Comments
Ah ah ah....sigh.
I hear you buddy.
she murders a great song!!
Judy did this at least two years before Leonard Cohen recorded it on his Love and Hate album
Pretty incredible interpretation before Cohen even recorded his version.
She tried to take credit for Cohen's career BUT she can't take this song!! Sorry but it has COHEN written ALL OVER IT!! 👀⚘
Don't what you're talking about asshole. Check out how many covers of Leonard Choen songs she has done, including a whole album of Leonard Choen songs. She was his biggest fan and her version of Suzanne made him soon to be famous
My favorite album-- we wore it out. Suzanne, Sunny Goodge Street, Liverpool Lullabye-- which would you live without? And wasn't it a long way down; and wasn't it a strange way down?
Maybe mine too although that covers a lot of territory. Top 10 for sure. And still is...! Nearly every song. The ones you mentioned plus Marat/Sade and Pirate Jenny, e.g.
RIP Leonard :(
And then the veins stand out like highways,
all along your wrist.
One of my favorite song lyrics.
I'd forgotten what the art of song interpretation was all about.
@Brendan Barry Glad to know you enjoyed this song. There is a recording by Risa Potters from 1972 which I've uploaded, titled "Traveling Man." Anyone who likes songs written by Leonard Cohen should listen to it. Cohen didn't write it, but you would think he did. There are many similarities with this recording.
Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate your comments. There are a few record exchanges on the Net that are the best places to find old vinyl for sale, besides checking on Amazon and to a lesser extent on eBay. These sites are Discogs, Musicstack, and Gemm. Navigate the sites carefully and you may find several copies of this album to choose from. Prices vary and sometimes records in very good condition are surprisingly inexpensive.
Thanks so much for posting.I love this song recording&the entire LP.When I was a teen,my brother had it.Till today,I hadn't heard anything from it in 30+ years, though a year ago tried&failed at finding this song rendition at YT&elsewhere, plus tried DL-ing a torrent file of the album no one was seeding.I agree with the commenter who said the selection(& performance)of songs is impressive.Such an atmosphere to the LP.Now I see the album's at iTunes. I should just break down & buy it, shouldn't I?
I love rock, punk, rhythm & blues. But tthis albumis my favorite of all time, The voice, the choice of of songs. It was all brilliant. Thank you, judy you were in "the zone" when you recorded this.
You got that right, pal.
I have this album, thanks for sharing.
She does sing it better. Thanks for sharing.
Vous êtes très bienvenu. Thank you for sharing.
They say Leonard Cohen never recorded it.
Great ! Super, indeed !
Merci beaucoup.
It is on his Love and hate album
whoever they are, they're wrong
