Josh Ritter - Where The Night Goes Lyrics

Heard the word from Brenda Lee
You were coming home she said
Cross my heart I could not believe it
Holy hell you could have struck me dead (but)
Three cheers for the grapevine (what)
Told me you were coming home
Let’s see where the night takes us
Let’s see where the night goes

I admit it’s been slow going
You pay your bills and still they own yo
You know the way with best laid plans
Til this is me and that’s who I am (now)
I make the rounds and pay my dues
Meet up with friends and I dream about you
It isn’t much but it’s still a lot
Sometimes honey I still get lost

In those long nights, old cars
Backroads and the boneyards
You dropped the pedal like a holy roller
Sheriff of hell couldn’t pull you over

Tough girl from the bad town
Brought up not to stay down
Sweet tea, white lightning
Breaking hearts and not minding

Come on in it’s so good to see ya
It’s been so long I know I know I…
Let’s see where the night takes us
Let’s see where the night goes…

Last I saw you was a’greyhound waiting
You said don’t be sad and don’t be blue
LA is not the destination
Still I believe that I must pass through
I saw your face from a time to time
Now you’re coming home
Let’s see where the night takes us
Let’s see where the night goes…

Only the lonely know the way I’m feelin’
Only the living go to the graveyard grieving
Still we’re alive and you’re astounding
Feel the pulse of the world pounding
Feel the pull of the American diverse
The mountains the rivers, the fields at harvest
It’s all we have and that’s a lot
Come on honey let’s get lost

In the long nights, old cars
Backroads and the boneyards
You dropped the pedal like a holy roller
Sheriff of hell couldn’t pull you over

Tough girl from the bad town
Brought up not to stay down
Sweet tea, white lightning
Breaking hearts and not minding

Come on in it’s so good to see ya
It’s been so long I know I know I…
Let’s see where the night takes us
Let’s see where the night goes…

In the long nights, old cars
Backroads and the boneyards
You dropped the pedal like a holy roller
Sheriff of hell couldn’t pull you over

Tough girl from the bad town
Brought up not to stay down
Sweet tea, white lightning
Breaking hearts and not minding

Come on in it’s so good to see ya
It’s been so long I know I know I…
Let’s see where the night takes us
Let’s see where the night goes…

A long night,
The old car
The backroads
And the boneyards

What an incredible artist this man is.

  2. g.... ....

Much better song writer than Mr Bland Sheeran

  3. T.... K....

Nice! Heard this on MVY Martha’s Vineyard 😄

    T.... K....

Me too mossy. They play good shit.

  4. T.... N....

I went to his concert in virgina

  5. j.... a....

Wow, all that packed into 3 minutes and 49 seconds!! Beautiful

It is an intentional paradox, because it is wendigo chilling song in a bright package.

It's a good feeling a bad one, pulling. The real temptation of knowing, but can you ever know if you don't keep on trying to prove yourself right or wrong, indifferently in limitless space of nothingness where anything can be.

You can't see where the night goes, it's dark and if you follow it's only more dark and it goes somewhere you'll never see, so let's see infinity.

I once had a part-time job soliciting door-to-door for a lawncare company. Our driver would drive us around to different neighborhoods in an old van, he'd always have the radio playing. I heard Josh Ritter once in that van, now he's one of my favourite artists! Every time I hear him now I think of my old job & I realize that it wasn't that bad.

Just wanted to update this thread. This song still rocks!!

  9. A.... G....

This song (tempo, melody etc) reminds me of another old song by Eric Clapton (I think). Something about the piano. Not a ripoff or sampling but musically close.

Josh!! This is the song! Thank you for your amazing music! I'm trying to follow in your steps. Support independent music! This is my Kickstarter for my debut album! Could use the support.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/228549494/garrett-randolph-starting-fires-in-the-dark?ref=profile_backed

This guy is constantly amazing, he's a little famous, he's bound to be more so.

  12. m.... ....

    Obsessed.

  13. R.... ....

I can hear some echoes of old Steve Forbert in this. Really enjoyable!

    R.... ....

Yeah, a bit of "Romeo's Tune" in the piano arrangement for sure.

    R.... ....

Everything about it sounds like Romeo's Tune... The beat, piano licks, vocal melody... All strikingly similar... But... That's not a bad thing 😎

  14. W.... R....

What can I say? I just love him!

  15. T.... ....

  16. L.... R....

    Love this!

A variation on Bye Bye American Pie- very well done ,very nice-but it's essentially Bohemian Bubble Gum -Paul Simon sings Jack Kerouac-great sincerity, & he's clearly a warm, beautiful soul-but this is not powerful,or original- so it's not really first rate stuff like Dylan,Waits,Cohen,Springsteen, or Simon

    D.... R....

Pretty much every chord combination has been done (outside of experimental jazz and pretentious "what is art?" type music). Plus he was born like 30yrs after any of those guys. We get it - there's no good music after 1986, he's not original or great, blah blah blah Get over it man, Josh Ritter is one of the best songwriters of the past 10-15yrs.

    D.... R....

    @Jake Chandler Amen!

  18. i.... ....

This is a great song. I had to laugh a little at the opening line, because a girl named Brenda Lee got me into Josh Ritter back in college. This song made me smile :)

  19. G.... A....

This song was born to last.

  21. Z.... B....

    It's final.
This guy can't write a bad song. He's incapable. He's too damn good for it.

    Z.... B....

I saw his name on your shirt in your mushroom video. Being a curious kind of guy I had to check him out. I like what I hear. Good music like this is hard to find. Thanks for wearing the shirt.

    Z.... B....

That's awesome man. Check out the song Thin Blue Flame to really get an idea of his songwriting capabilities.

    Z.... B....

I listened. WOW! That's powerful. I love it because while some of it is so clear you can interpret the rest of it for yourself. Thanks again.

    Z.... B....

No problem man. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Z.... B....

I'm a little new to the party but I came here for the same reason, not a bad song. It's ridiculous, the guy is amazing.

  22. D.... H....

It's great to hear him with an electric sound again! Such a great vibe!

  23. G.... Y....

This is just fantastic. Haven't been so excited for a Josh Ritter album since Historical Conquests.

  24. D.... Q....

Damn, Josh just gets better and better. I haven't been a long, only about ten years or so. His music just lifts me up, and also he makes you listen and think about his lyrics. He also really cares about his fans and it shows when you see him performing, A true treasure to music is Josh.

  25. M.... 5....

Josh Ritter is one of those rare artists whose sounds, both large and small, remind us that this universe can be an exhilarating, confusing and beautiful place - where symmetries and parallels are as surprising as they are poetic. This Irishman, who grew up in Idaho (and now lives near LA) feels that another one of Ritter's songs has hit the mark!

    M.... 5....

Are you saying that you are an Irishman ? ...because Josh is not Irish. He has a huge fan base here and spent some time in Ireland.

    M.... 5....

    +Mrplumpynutt Indeed I am Irish

    maith an fear.

  26. C.... M....

A roaring fire of a song. On a yet uncharted sea, on a holy boat, Jack and Jill throw pales of blessed water over board as they sing along, sinking, to future Josh Ritter songs.

  27. J.... K....

Another great song...can't wait for this album and tour!
