Josh Ritter - All Some Kind Of Dream Lyrics

I saw my brother in a stranger's face
I saw my sister in a smile
My mother's laughter in a far off place
My father's footsteps in each mile
I thought I knew who my neighbor was
We didn't need to be redeemed
Oh, what could I have been thinking of?
Was it all some kind of dream?

I saw my country in the hungry eyes
Of a million refugees
Between the rocks and the rising tide
As they were tossed across the sea
There was a time when we were them
Just as now they all are we
Was there an hour when we took them in?
Or was it all some kind of dream?

I saw the children in the holding pens
I saw the families ripped apart
And though I try I cannot begin
To know what it did inside their hearts
There was a time when we held them close
And weren't so cruel, low, and mean
And we did good unto the least of those
Or was it all some kind of dream?

I saw justice with a tattered hem
I saw compassion on the run
But I saw dignity in spite of them
I prayed its day would finally come
There was a time when we chose our sides
And we refused to live between
We rose to fight for what we knew was right
Or was it all some kind of dream?

Last night I lay in my true love's bed
And she lay there close beside
And we lay thinking 'bout what lay ahead
And wondering if the sun would rise
For it seems that these are darker days
Than any others that we've seen
Oh, how we wished that we weren't wide awake
And this was all some kind of dream

    Country/Americana music has been saved.

Saw him perform in Ks City tonight. This was his last song and wrapped up the night so well. Great lyrics.

    M.... E....

Same ending in St. Louis tonight. This song is more powerful with just guitar and Josh singing it. The lyrics need to be heard by everyone.

  7. t.... d....

Heard this song at the Ralph Lauren store today! Pretty damn good song!

  8. K.... S....

someone had to place the people from the travelling wilburies
wordy musicians are so rare now days

  9. D.... ....

Heard of Josh through the Jason Isbell fan club. Going to see him tonight. Sure he will get a great Glasgow welcome.

  10. D.... ....

    Send them back! Trump 2020!

    D.... ....

Derek brother, we can secure the border, and still be compassionate decent humans. Don’t let politicians or the media corrupt your heart or mind.

    D.... ....

@James Garrison Let's be compassionate to our fellow Americans first.

I live in LA. All I see is homelessness, drug abuse, and Americans struggling. Our schools are useless. That is the real crisis. How about we fix our own house first before inviting more guests.

  11. D.... ....

Where is your song protesting President Obama's long standing policy of detaining children? Also more illegal immigrants were deported under Obama than Trump, Bush II, or Clinton.

    D.... ....

    Derek What's your point?

  12. W.... C....

if this does not leave a mark on future generations, what will?

  13. J.... S....

This is an amazing song. I love it.

  14. d.... ....

Wow. Soundtrack of what is. Great song. Great singing. Great playing. Wow.

  15. n.... K....

    Excellent song though and through!

This immigrant was brought to an outpouring of tears. It touched my soul. We came here in 1958, so filled with hope, and for the most part it was a marriage made in heaven for this man anyway.Sixty some years later, we find ourselves bewildered and somewhat baffled by what has happened to America. No longer home of the brave, though they are still here. Home of the money, money for nothing. We shared a stage once in high school with Josh Ritter, back when, with the Viola Sound Machine. He, an upcoming star, we, a downward sliding, eye on the prize, teacher. This song brought me face to face, with those hopeful times, back when, so needed to be Now again. Thank you Mr. Ritter, my utmost respect to you and yours, brother Lincoln included.

And when you moved here, I'm sure you completed all the forms, paid the fees, then waited your turn and came in LEGALLY.

  17. T.... K....

Thankfully we have someone singing in his natural voice without the affected pretentious white husky borrowed voice

  18. R.... H....

    Most excellent 👌😎

  19. D.... J....

    Repetitive with lame lyrics, imo.

  20. N.... S....

Got some Willie vibes on that solo!

  21. R.... D....

"Though these are darker days, than any other that we seen" Not a dream! Ask Grand parents about their dark days! Time to wake up! Josh Ritter is the best!

  22. B.... K....

Might this be the next Bob Dylan?

  23. D.... M....

This song strikes me as a naive, lefty lament. I love the activist 60s folk music boom as much as the next guy, but this song just sounds a little outdated. Times are always tough, but not as tough as this lyric makes them sound. At least that's my take. I hope the rest of the album is better.

    D.... M....

Dan MacIntosh we have actual, living Nazis living openly in our country. Shit is as bad as it sounds. Go live under your rock since you're okay with being so unaware.

    D.... M....

@Kurtis Tripp What's an "actual Nazi"? If you're so afraid, there's 194 other countries in the world you can move to and be safe. 😂

    D.... M....

Kurtis Tripp These people would cheer for a genocide right now, they're not unaware of children being torn from their parents' arms, sleeping on concrete floors wrapped in aluminum blankets or drowning in the river. They will do a lot worse before this is over, the longer we wait to do what they did in Puerto Rico the harder it will be to beat fascism back.

  24. P.... P....

Just saw Josh on CBS's Saturday Show. great song.

  25. P.... P....

Just saw Josh on CBS's Saturday Show. great song.

  26. N.... ....

Saw him on CBS 2. BORING, BORING, BORING. Band members look like they were forced to play.

  27. C.... L....

Love you Josh- excited to see you and Jason kicking ass together. Looking foward to the new record.

  28. A.... ....

I volunteer to teach English as a Second language to adults and am using this song in class next week.

    A.... ....

Start them on The Beatles or something surely?

    A.... ....

Healthy bit of indoctrination never hurt anybody 😈

    A.... ....

@Nick Thorp This is America now.

  29. A.... ....

Yes it was all some kind of dream. The idea that America used to be better is a fiction. America has always been a better place for the rich straight white male than it has been for the rest.

    A.... ....

@Derek We're NOT going ANYWHERE. YOU and Trump don't belong. YOU leave.

    A.... ....

@Derek Tell us....what flavor is Trump's crusty taint today?

    A.... ....

    @E Cannon fuck off cuck

    A.... ....

    Read Animal Farm, Robespierre...

    A.... ....

    @E Cannon sour grapes

  30. j.... u....

    ♥️🙏😇

  31. M.... W....

Thanks, great lyrics on an Easter Sunday

    M.... W....

nobody knows if you're being sarcastic

  32. M.... G....

Listening on Easter Sunday morning, as good as any ‘Easter’ message I have heard fro a long time. Thank you Josh

  33. G.... I....

    My lord. I wept.

  34. R.... B....

I didn't know much about this artist. But I just heard this song on Live From Here and had to go looking for it. It echoes my current feelings perfectly. I wish everyone in this country would listen to this song.

    R.... B....

Do yourself a huge favour and go back through his catalogue. One of the very best American singer-songwriters of the 21st century.

  35. G.... J....

Nice to see Jason in there. Nice collaboration. Hurray! Real music!😎

  36. J.... P....

Thanks Josh. Good stuff here. Powerful, thoughtful and poignant. Stay great my friend!

  37. B.... S....

Great song, but I much prefer the demo. I think the Nashville treatment, the lilting bass, and the twang all diminish the song. Jason Isbell is very talented, but Josh is not well-served by his production.

    B.... S....

Isbell is one of my very favorite artists, but on this song I agree. The stripped down version is much more powerful.

  38. S.... B....

when is 40% of america going to get on the right side of history

    S.... B....

When we reelect President Trump in 2020. I love watching the Democratic party implode on itself. Send them back!

    S.... B....

When we confront the fact that the American Dream is humanity's nightmare and that America was never great.

    S.... B....

@Tliltictotolotl Macehualli Then stop being a hypocrite and put down your phone (an American invention), go to bed hungry tonight, then tomorrow hop on a boat (because airplanes are another evil American creation) and go back to whatever shíthole country your ancestors came from. Try improving life for them. No. Instead, you'll just complain on the internet like the spoiled, entitled baizuo you really are.

    S.... B....

Derek Or how about you stop being a racist asshole and grow a heart? You probably find that impossible like all the other fascists.

    S.... B....

Spot on.....unfortunately Neanderthals don't get it.....and America has more than their share of neanderthals!.....I think their name is DEREK the dipshit!

  39. K.... F....

These are strange and mournful days, and I pray all the mothers and children are reunited, because your music makes me think of John Prine and Paul Simon, and every other person who cares enough to sing about it.

  40. K.... F....

    thank you Josh.

  41. D.... C....

    Love love love

  42. L.... D....

Wow Josh,so good sound... hope to see you again in Italy 😊

  43. W.... F....

I'm always so happy when I get a notification from your channel. This song blew me away. In a world of crap music thank you for putting out exemplary music.
    Much love.

  44. T.... M....

Obama was worse against immigration...where was this song when he was in office?

    T.... M....

The Masterdebator What's the point when making these comments? We shouldn't ever find our humanity and compassion and continue to go along with horrific ways of treating people because it was happening before?

  45. K.... R....

    This is great.

  46. w.... m....

Wow, that is a very pretty song. Great lyrics, and beautiful guitar from Mr. Isbell. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

  47. J.... R....

Listen to the notes, man. All you get is love and approval.

  48. J.... R....

    Josh,

As a long time fan of you and Jason, as a singer/songwriter myself,
I can only say you've killed the song.

Let the over-production go. It's your wooden leg.

It was heart-rending in the demo. Now it's about some cool slide guitar.

  49. A.... B....

    Beautiful song and lyrics

  50. J.... J....

    Don't believe the hysteria.

We gladly welcome and rescue refugees. We have a process.
There's not a time when 'we' were them. We didn't illegally enter a country. 'We' came in lawfully.
We still do take them in. EVERY DAY! And I'm glad for it.
Holding pens? Really? Have you seen what these people have come from? I've spent time with them in their pallet homes just across from the Toro Factory in Juarez. These "holding pens" are far better than the pallet and cardboard houses they came from.
We separate children everyday from their parents. The parents chose the separation by breaking the law, trying to enter a county illegally. Obama did the same damn thing.
We still do hold them close, and we aren't so cruel low and mean. Do some research instead of destroying the image of America because of this isolated and justified incident.
If you are choosing to fight for what's right, don't cheer for breaking our laws... laws that no one has had a problem with for generations.

DARKER DAYS than any other we have seen!!! You can not be serious!

    Good grief.

    J.... J....

The Administration hysteria is hurting our commitments to former translators and interpreters in Afghanistan and Iraq. We are leaving them alone to the wolves now.

We promised to help them, and be a safe harbor if the situation turned worse, and we have, in the past year, virtually cut off that lifeline. From 3K admitted in 2017, to <100 total the next, their new "security checks" are now rejecting 29 out of every 30 people we deemed safe the year before. SOURCE: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-refugees-iraq-exclusi/exclusive-pentagon-raises-alarm-about-sharp-drop-in-iraqi-refugees-coming-to-u-s-idUSKCN1L51N9

How did this happen? Well, partially, we asked them to spy on militants when we were there, and now our new "vetting" says- "they hung out with militants, and should be rejected!".

To claim that we are as welcoming as we were in the past ignores the ethics, values, and morality of our current leaders. Leadership makes a difference. Character matters.

    J.... J....

So you never heard about stowaways in the late 1800s and early 1900s who would come over on steamships?

    J.... J....

    who is "we" Jared?

    J.... J....

Thank you for saying it so I didn't have to. I love Josh Ritter, even when he challenges my own perspectives, but this one just makes me roll my eyes (and it did when I first heard it live in Winston Salem too).
As you pointed out, "Darker days than any other we have seen", whew. Previous generations, civilizations, would beg to differ. We are (collectively) such an entitled, spoiled lot.

    J.... J....

"We didn't illegaly enter a country"? The US has invaded more countries, orchestrated more coups, and dropped more bombs than any other. "We separate children from their parents every day" the fact that you have tens of people who say it's no big deal shows how dark these days really are.

  51. D.... S....

    Wonderful song, perfect sentiment!

  52. M.... M....

Predictable politics, virtue signaling, no subtlety or the wordplay we look forward to. Watered down. No real heart or point to this song. No fun. Get back to your rock and roll roots. Have some fun. Get out of the Brooklyn bubble.

    M.... M....

I mean yeah, his politics are pretty predictable...they've been the same well over a decade.

Lyrically definitely not his best work, but far from bad.

    M.... M....

His politics are his roots. Being a decent human being, and singing about what's in the heart. His roots and politics have been the same since I first saw him live in '03. stop getting all your knowledge from facebook memes and tv news, perhaps you'll learn Josh lives, born and raised in small town Idaho.

  53. A.... H....

Josh, nothing but respect. You are the GOAT of modern songwriters. But, this one seems too on the nose for you. I agree with your politics...but you are at your best when you challenge your listeners with allusions, metaphors, and obscurity. That is what we love about you, make us work for it. Earn it. Bring back the 'lamentations', 'pharaohs', 'myrtle', and the like. Make me Google words. Reread old poetry. Find a painting I have never seen before. Teach me. This song is just preaching to the choir.

    A.... H....

I think he was looking to write a specific kind of song here. Sometimes an artist wants to do something outside their usual style. Not every song he writes needs to be clever. Sometimes simple words and a beautiful melody have a place.

But of course your opinion is valid and I certainly hope we get some classic Josh as well.

    A.... H....

But those who most need to hear the message may be too obtuse to understand allusions, metaphors, and obscurity.

    A.... H....

Clarity and poignancy can be just as poweful a tool. It is okay to be simple and honest, otherwise one runs the risk of becoming insufferably haughty and disconnected with reality. He is singing about basic rights and a basic sense of decency- there's no need to be obscure. It is a lovely message.

    A.... H....

This is a much simpler song with a straight and clear story. No second guessing here. Sometimes there's the need to voice things straight in your face.

  54. K.... C....

I wanted to see more of Isbell picking.

  55. P.... ....

    Love it!

  56. K.... D....

Wow! Brilliant and melodious. This is protest music. And I love it.

  57. D.... B....

    Love it!

  58. G.... ....

    Magnificent! Yes. Thank you, Josh.

  59. J.... C....

Josh, we really needed this right now. Praise to the singer-songwriters... thanks for being our voice.

    J.... C....

    excellent comment!

    J.... C....

Praise to those who virtue signal.

  60. J.... C....

This is a fantastic song, and a very important one. Very grateful that Josh wrote it - but I can't help but feel like the demo version (released on this channel in October) captured the sentiment even better than the official release version. Does anyone else feel that too?

    J.... C....

Yeah, I get that. I really dig the guitar solos in this version though. Both are great! The original version is a bit more mellow though, a bit more captivating of the sentiments it holds.

    J.... C....

I really like them both. I like this one for its folksy, country quality, but I agree with you that the demo version seems to emulate the sentiment more accurately.

  61. M.... R....

Looks like a lot of fun was had down in Nashville at RCA Studio A making this album.

  62. j.... 4....

Yes!!! These are my favorite lyrics of 2019! Beautiful song, Josh!!! You're a master!

  63. M.... R....

A documentary will surely be made about today's times. This song will be its soundtrack.
