Josh Groban - Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) Lyrics

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

I miss the ballads. I miss the shy and unassuming Josh before he became the rock star pop singer and his " sound " changed forever. It all changed when David Foster stopped being his manager. David Foster knew Josh was a balladeer like James Taylor. Not the confusing mix of what he has evolved to today. I never get tired of listening to his first three album. "Illuminations" was the begining of the end of his beautiful baritone voice to the strangling sound he belts out today. " Empty Sky is just awful. Sad.😔💕

    s.... r....

Woow what a comment, I totally agree with every single word you wrote and I feel exactly the same.. I will forever miss the old Josh..from those masterpieces like Closer and Awake, his voice was fitting so much those ballads and romantic songs, his gentle voice... Nowadays it's just too confusing and his voice is diffrent, completely doesn't fit this rock music. 😔I wonder if he ever gets back to his old music..

    s.... r....

    @Anita8891
He wanted to get out of the "geeky" genre of classical ballads and the "crooner" reputation singing to preteen young girls and old moms. More toward a crossover mainstream pop like Ed Sheeran. And if he writes and sings his own music he keeps all of the royalties. He has to pay royalties for every cover song he records. So he moved out of Foster's circle, got a new management company after Awake, eliminated the romantic ballads and foreign language songs that were his trademark sound and now he cuts "Empty Sky" pop songs way out of his baritone range that sounds like he's screeching reaching for the high notes and I'm not the least impressed. He's kept his solid fan base for this long because he is so charming on talk shows and early morning TV and his fans keep holding on that "the next time" he'll put out his signature album and each time he's gotten a little bit worst. His live concert last August at Mcmenamins Edgepark in Portland was a mess. Down right aweful. 45mins late. Only lasted an hour. Filled with his worst Jr. High school humor and ramblings between songs. Very little actual singing. Picked the absolute worst of his foreign language pop song in Portuguese, No encore and I drove 250 miles one way and overnight in Troutdale to sit on the lawn for that mess. I was embarrassed for him as his concerts have always been fabulous. End of tour, tired, he stopped trying.

    s.... r....

@seriously? really? It's really amazing what you write, very similar thoughts to mine on all this. His music used to be so light, effortless..now it's the opposite, heavy and with small effort.... I have been his fan for soooo many years and I have always appreciated his unique classical style, deep voice, sensitivity, the romantic side of his songs...But now it's all gone and it's really sad...I know that everyone changes, can't remain the same but what was so unique about him and so fit for his voice, it's hard to find in his current music these days...I loved his songs in foreign languages, I was always so impressed by them,, how good he was in it....and really he only sand Voce during that concert? And why were they late? that's really disappointing.. I wish he wasn't trying so much to become another Ed Sheeran, cause that's not really him...At least he should stick to musicals, he is good in it, uses his classical voice and he loves acting...Empty sky is like you said, not meant for his voice and i can't unfortunately even finish listening to the whole song, it never happened in the past, he used to be my favorite artist on this planet.....I still hope someone will help him to get back on the track...and that he won't stop trying, as you said, he always used to be fabulous...I am sorry to hear that concert was so bad....Let's hope one day he will still get back to the music is meant for his voice and that we will still enjoy it as much as we did in the past....

You want to hear a great new up and coming singer musician? check out "Josh Turner Guitar" on YouTube first to be introduced. He's Joshua Lee Turner (the pop singer NOT the country gospel singer or the actor). He performs solo and sings lead, with his band "The Other Favorites" or with his best friend Carson McKee as duo. Go to his channel and select his "covers" playlist. 55 or so covers that will knock you over, they are so well done. You'll be enthralled the whole afternoon. He is an incredibly talented NY musician ( guitar acoustic, bass, banjo, mandolin, drums keyboard you name it.) started out on YouTube and the rest is history. His first album "as Good a Place as Any" just came out 2019.( Available on Amazon music.) Hes on a world wide tour right now weaving all over the east coast and midwest before winding up in Europe. I wish he was closer I'd drive 250 miles to hear him. He reminds me of a young John Mayer. Singer songwriter (before fame began focusing on JM's dating life instead of his music.) Turner cuts through the noise of so much mimicry in the era of American Idol and youtube where every self-promoting talented young musician is trying to stand out and by just reviewing his methodically built body of work, you can't help but be impressed that he "earned" your listenership. First he started out doing complex covers of well loved bands to show he had the talent to master the complex musicology of other very successful performers' arrangements. It showed he had the actual musician, (playing), part down. Then the vocal arrangements of those covers proved he had the voice and the ear for doing those iconic covers true to form. His debut album appears to be a body of his own Indie work. If you loved Josh Groban, JoshTurner is to light pop, indie music what Josh Groban was to the classical, balladeer. thanks for subscribing on my channel but I dont post content... sorry. I just have an opinion I like to share...😂😎

@seriously? really? oh,thank you so much for recommending, he is really an interesting musician, plays the guitar so well :) thank you for the hint,i like discovering new musicians and talents:)

Got the sad news of my older cousin`s passing just after midnight this morning.
Don McLean`s "Vincent" was the first song comming to my mind that moment.
Listened to the original, lyric, version and to a live cover version by Ed Sheeran and was touched allready!
But, wanting or not, I need to say, Josh Groban`s voice and the virtuous guitar playing of Christopher Parkening got me a kind of "goosebump and shivers down the spine" emotions and feelings I never expected!
    Well done! Chappeau!
    Rest in peace, Klaus-Dieter ;-(
    You are missed.......

  14. E.... B....

Just started watching "Loving Vincent". BTW Guitarist is wonderful.

The movie Loving Vincent is a true masterpiece💜💜

  15. E.... B....

I just love to listen the song in any version. So beautiful.

    E.... B....

Thank you for your kind words, it's also one of my favourites😊

  16. W.... J....

This song was written by Don McLean (American Pie). The song Killing Me Softly With His Song was written about Don McLean.

    W.... J....

    Oh really?

    W.... J....

Anita8891 yes. Killing me softy was about McLean. While Groban’s voice is fantastic, it would have been more impactful with guitar alone. This beautiful lyric needs no embellishment. Josh’s voice would have been enough. He also rushed through it. Listen to McLean’s version with solo guitar.

  17. C.... B....

Oh.mon dieu ce monsieur est magnifique. Merveilleux exceptionnel sublime très très très belle voix enchanteresse. Merci monsieur pour toutes ces merveilles. Un vrai régal un enchantement une voix qui nous berce fait un bien.

Stop being a showoff - seriously what did you say? I am crazy about Josh and I can't believe he was this young - just a baby. As I recall this was on his first album and still remains one of my favorites!

  18. m.... 4....

In the movie "Little Man Tate" about a child genius, he was being interviewed for acceptance in to a school for gifted children, he had never seen Van Gogh's "Irises", he stopped and was fixed on the painting, the interviewer asked him, what do you think of the painting?, he replied, he was lonely.

    m.... 4....

Oh really? That's sooo touching, I need to see this movie 💜

  19. E.... B....

  40. C.... P....

No, Josh, this song did not need to be redone! The original is a Flawless masterpiece. Maybe you are genuine and sincere and humble but it seems like people, like you're good friend Celine Dion, who think their voices are superior have to "improve" upon good or great songs.

    C.... P....

In my opinion he meant by being redone, that he loved this song so much, that he wanted to sing it as well, not improve it, just sing the way he felt it... The original is the original but I don't think there is anything wrong in artists putting their hearts into songs they love and get inspired by... That's what music is about, it keeps inspiring us.. 💜

What a beautiful voice. I watch for him all the time and I am always impressed. He is wonderful. Thank you for the gift u give to us.

  53. l.... ....

There is no doubt that Vincent suffered from a bad case of severe clinical depression. It is also highly unlikely that he killed himself. It is far more likely he died by misadventure, as a result of a drunken party and playing with guns. The perpetrator of his accidental death was probably the son of the mayor of Arles, so it was covered up. He gets a bad rap. It is true he didn't sell many paintings. This is a gorgeous song, and well-done. Just thought I'd post this stuff here. Check it out.

    l.... ....

Thank you for sharing, it's fascinating how we don't know much about Vincent's life, and yet we can discover his soul through his paintings. It's so sad that artists most of the time aren't appreciated.. All we can do now, is forever rememeber his art and how much he suffered... The song represents all so well. 💜

@Anita8891 You're welcome. This song is so beautiful that anyone listening to it has to stop whatever he's doing and often would make you tear up. This song makes us love him more and understand what Vincent Van Gogh had to go through in his short storied life.

@Julito Fernandez oh exactly.. This song has such beautiful deep lyrics and flowing melancholic melody that represents Van gogh so well.. One of my favourite song in this world...
