Joni Mitchell - This Flight Tonight Lyrics

Look out the left, the captain said
The lights down there that's where we'll land
I saw a falling star burn up
Above the Las Vegas sands
It wasn't the one that you gave to me
That night down south between the trailers
Not the early one
That you can wish upon
Not the northern one
That guides in the sailors

Oh starbright starbright
You've got the lovin' that I like all right
Turn this crazy bird around
I shouldn't have got on this flight tonight

You got the touch so gentle and sweet
But you've got that look so critical
Now I can't talk to you baby
I get so weak
Sometimes I think love is just mythical
Up there's a heaven
Down there's a town
Blackness everywhere and little lights shine
Oh blackness blackness dragging me down
Come on light the candle in this poor heart of mine

Oh starbright starbright
You've got the lovin' that I like all right
Turn this crazy bird around
I shouldn't have got on this flight tonight

I'm drinking sweet champagne
Got the headphones up high
Can't numb you out
Can't drum you out of my mind
They're playing Goodbye baby
Baby Goodbye
Ooh ooh love is blind

Up go the flaps down go the wheels
I hope you got your heat turned on baby
I hope they finally fixed your automobile
I hope it's better when we meet again baby

Starbright starbright
You got the lovin' that I like all right
Turn this crazy bird around
I shouldn't have got on this flight tonight

    If anybodys still listening

Look out the left the captain said
The lights down there, that's where we'll land
I saw a falling star burn up
    Above the Las Vegas sands
It wasn't the one that you gave to me
That night down south between the trailers
    Not the early one
    That you can wish upon,

    That guides in the sailors

But you've got that look so critical
Now I can't talk to you baby

  3. G.... B....

Who inspired this song? Who did Joni want to return to?

  4. J.... H....

Joni is nothing short o brillant: " I could drink a case of you and still be on my feet"

  5. C.... C....

    this is huge

  6. B.... 6....

    Angels voice

  7. K.... N....

Nazareth won an award for this song, they thanked JM, and she said it was now a Nazareth song

  8. P.... F....

wow i had no idea very kool !!!

  9. T.... B....

She’s the one and only one

  10. S.... C....

Dang dang dang this tune hit. Hearing as many versions. Seems to be helping

  11. L.... G....

Heard Nazareth’s version on the radio yesterday. Had it cranked up in my car. Afterwards the DJ said it was originally written and recorded by Joni Mitchell! I was stunned. I’m Canadian and was born in 1969 so I always thought it was a Nazareth song. So cool! 🇨🇦🎼👍🏽

    L.... G....

    Joni’s Canadian too though...

    L.... G....

Jessica Richards I know she is Canadian but I was too young to remember when Joni wrote that song. I was too young to remember a lot of her songs being born in 1969. By my teens in the 80’s I definitely new the Nazareth version. I didn’t even know Joni Mitchell’s music until I was older. I wasn’t a fan either. Too folky. I have recently started to listen to her some of her music only to discover that I did know a few of her hits and realize now how extremely talented she was. Big Yellow Taxi!! 🚕 OMG I could not believe that was her song. Funny how it goes sometimes eh? 🇨🇦😊🤷🏼‍♂️

  12. F.... ....

Wow. Was just listening to Woodstock by Joni and was blown away by how under appreciated her version is compared to CSNY’s. And for some reason, I got This Flight Tonight in my head (by Nazareth) decided to look it up and unbeknownst to me, Joni Mitchell wrote that too! She is so criminally underrated. Makes me proud to call myself a Canadian.

  13. r.... ....

goosebumps... had just been listening to the nazareth 1977 stadium live version... both insanely good!

  14. P.... W....

Who knew this song would defeat Thanos?

  15. T.... W....

I was a kid when I heard Joni for the first time using the word "fuck." For a kid whose family didn't swear (at the time). she blew my mind.

  16. V.... ....

    In a spiritual, non-religious sense.

  17. V.... ....

    She's a goddess.

  18. H.... H....

This is one of the greatest songs of all time.

  19. b.... h....

Amazing this song eventually morphed into hearts baracuda.

    b.... h....

The Nazareth version did, it had the galloping riff

    b.... h....

@Rik Dusk Nazareth's was a cover of this hence the original becoming Barracuda

  20. J.... A....

Nothing Joni Mitchell does could be bad.

  21. H.... M....

Is 1:55 the only time we hear drums and electric guitar throughout the whole album?

    H.... M....

    There's slide guitar on California.

  22. J.... S....

    yikes..I love Joni..but no.

  23. D.... W....

Thank God Nazareth rescued this song.

    D.... W....

He didn't rescue it, no Joni Mitchell song needs rescuing

    D.... W....

    You mean ruined it?

  24. T.... E....

Joni Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod AB Canada and then she moved with her family to Saskatoon SK Canada when she was still a little girl she contracted polio when she was in the hospital she was singing to other kids and after she graduated high school she moved to Los Angeles CA USA where she got her career in popular music in success and she came to the world stage

  25. c.... ....

The version of this song by Nazareth is incredible. Better than Joni's original.

  26. L.... M....

I never knew it was a Joni song until later in life and I mean when I was 24. I grew up thinking it was a Nazareth song all this time

    L.... M....

I just found out and was born in 1960. Seen Nazareth twice live. Even got the chance to say hi to the lead singer in a bar after the show. The bouncers were giving him a hard time to get in the bar and I was like THIS IS THE HEAD GUY FROM NAZARETH. I never did like bouncers. Most were all assholes I found in a meat head sort of way.

    L.... M....

Are you kidding? Nazareth has a cover?! I've only ever known this as a Joni Mitchell song? Is it worth checking out the cover? On a scale of Counting Crows covering Joni Mitchell to Judy Collins covering Joni Mitchell, where does the Nazareth cover fall?

    L.... M....

    @MrRUKnight it's pretty awesome!

    L.... M....

Richard Harris 100%. Waitin for ac dc to do big yellow parking lot

    L.... M....

Hey, if Judas Priest can cover Joan Baez...

  27. Z.... M....

I do like Nazareth's take on this tune.....

    Z.... M....

    Me too!

But what about the version by Zimmer's Hole?

    https://youtu.be/bG4QbrksJ2U

    Enjoy and Crank it Up!

  28. s.... ....

Joni Mitchell clearly doesn't know how flaps work. But that's ok. Good song..

  29. D.... ....

the six people that thumed this down obviously didnt even hear it, what with their heads clear up that ass of theirs. they be needin a plexiglassectomy I do know that! thank you Joni without you so many bands would have just been fading away without ever getting that love you brought to the industry. I love you I truly do.

    D.... ....

Joni is a great lyricist, but her voice is irritating as all get out to me. Kinda like Bob Dylan. Not denying the talent, but not my cup of tea.

  30. L.... U....

I discovered this song through a sample that Mister Lies used in the song 'False Astronony' and I absolutely love it!

  31. S.... B....

In my opinion the Nazareth version is much better

  32. C.... L....

How the frack do you give Joni Mitchell a thumbs down? Are you a robot? Tip

    C.... L....

    They think rap is music

  33. C.... W....

one of the best songs EVER

  34. C.... C....

My daughter just landed in Reykjavik, after seeing the northern lights through the window of the red-eye. Can’t imagine what’s going on with the five people who don’t like this song...

  35. O.... G....

Happy Birthday today(November 7) to Joni Mitchell. Cheers!

  36. K.... M....

Turn, this crazy bird around. Shouldn't got on this flight tonight.

  37. g.... ....

I love they kept the distortion at 2:22...so real.

  38. D.... S....

the Nazareth version is much better

    D.... S....

I agree I prefer Nazareth's version, just musically I prefer Nazareth , tho I do like the original, without which there would be no Nazareth version!!!

    D.... S....

    Whoa!

For years, I've loved the Zimmer's Hole version, and had no idea that Joni did it originally!

I love her version almost as much as the ZH version!!!

    https://youtu.be/bG4QbrksJ2U

Check it out and Enjoy !

    D.... S....

I agree Nazareth's version is better this sucks

    D.... S....

    Dell Sherman
I also love the Nazareth version too but I’ll tell you where Joni Mitchell is from she’s from where I am from Saskatoon SK

    D.... S....

Joni's a one-of-a-kind original who was making music history before most of you were born. Of course everyone has a right to their own opinion but as the saying goes, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything.

  39. l.... ....

She's just a towering talent. Very, very few musicians in the entire history of popular music can even compare with her. She wrote all her own material, performed it in the studio and live with consummate skill, and created a new style of pop that was uniquely her own. Most think this is the best album of her early period, before she became so successful that she basically abandoned pop in favor of more jazz-oriented material that was far less accessible.

    l.... ....

and on top of that she's a wonderful painter

    l.... ....

    I'm with you 100%

  40. j.... ....

    Thanks for posting!
