Joni Mitchell - Night Ride Home Lyrics
Once in a while
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this 4th of July
Hula girls
And caterpillar tractors in the sand
The ukulele man
The fireworks
This 4th of July
Night ride home
I love the man beside me
We love the open road
Far from the overkill
Far from the overload
Back at the bar
The band tears down
But out here in the headlight beams
The silver powerlines
Gleam
On this 4th of July
Night ride home
Round the curve
And a big dark horse
Red taillights on his hide
Is keeping right alongside
Rev for stride
4th of July
Night ride home
I love the man beside me
We love the open road
No phones till Friday
Far from the undertow
Far from the overload
Once in awhile
In a big blue moon
There comes a night like this
Like some surrealist
Invented this 4th of July
Night ride home

Joni Mitchell Night Ride Home Comments
Larry Klein, her then husband is a great bass player.
The imagery of the lyrics is beautiful. The poetry, the melody, the crickets are erfection.
Nice song , magic ! 💐
The video is nice, but ignore it. Close your eyes. Listen in darkness. What a lovely piece. Be well, Joni, you and your sweet chords.
Title cut of a terrific album. Not so much as one bad cut on it, and a long-time fave of mine!
How does she do it? - she can sing anything and make it sound perfect
My alarm was set for two hours from now but I just woke up with this guitar intro playing in my head. Best two hours of "wasted" sleep ever.
Thanks for posting it.
How could someone be cooler than her?
at her most sublime, her most perfect. and obviously, stunningly beautiful
My life
Such beauty on so many levels. Aaaah, Joni.
Great lyrics, simple but profound instrumental arrangement.........Joni's the best !
: ) !!!!!
Brilliant.
my daddybear has always told me that Joni is a goddess; he's loved her since 1968
Such a beautiful soul ...
The album is the music version of Art, and it is great Art
fear not. joni mitchell has been happy
Sublime.
This style of her music misses the glory of Jaco.
My sweet heart sings with You
Unfortunately, we have only so many night rides home.
Joni's got soul.
Joni is such a gift.
It's so beautiful... to actually stop and realize the music you're listening quietly in a warm summer night is suddenly in sync with a cricket... that synchronicity is rare, almost like a gift, stop and cherish the performance, which is what I do when I listen to Joni's later work.
This is absolutely heavenly ...........................
2018 <3
masterpiece
Would drift on my boat listening to
Night ride Home. boat named Blue moon. special moment
This is a rare thing============--------------unpretenious
simply magic✨🎶✨🎶✨🎶✨
That cricket sound only perfects Joni's vision and vocals in this gem💖🎸🎶🎶🎶
Meravigliosa...
Davvero!
Another favorite Joni song. Love the album and her.
Great song!
just like an angel.
Joni has aged a lot better than this music video.
I've been loving her music for 46 years
I'm liking this song. . i'm not sure about the crickets. .
They like it too : ]
Passei minha juventude ouvindo isso e tudo indica que caminharei para a velhice ouvindo...
Elisangela Gomes de Araujo obrigado!
Thank you for uploading this video! One of my favorite songs of Joni's.
Love to see nothing but loving positive comments.

How's the Queen?,no comments?
The Queen of singer-songwriters:ever
Anyway,She see's a caterpillar,and a horse i think?she always loved men beside her
How's Joni?:simple and plain:far from the 'overload"?
Her voice is very deep on this album. What a great way to perform in the early 90s. Yet, she sang so highly on her early LPs.
don't hear anything as beautiful as that anymore
This song is Joni's version of Burt Bacharach's 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again'. The tempo is a little different and the words are obviously different, but it's so similar. They're both beautiful tho
Изумительная!
Сегодня 10 февраля, пожалуй, большего мне и не надо, ну, разве что бокальчик вина и теплый плед.
Her cricket guest drummer is explained in her boxed set she finished just before she fell ill this spring. She "sampled" him, & made him her guest drummer on several songs.
I have loved Joni since we used to chat so many years ago.
I lover her so much...
@Jeff Blythe I do also. I hope she's doing well and getting stronger.
You’re not alone
That cricket sound is crazy. bold and nutty and beautiful.
Etel Rosenberg i
Cicada ?
Joni just ROCKS!!
My fave. I prefer her later albums - she softened as a person and her voice became truly beautiful, full of feeling.
I couldn't agree more.
Awesome song. I'm there
Joni is in a class of her own no-one in music is like her and songs like this make her the special artist that she is. Thanks for posting.
That was just beautiful. Thank you.
You're welcome...I'm happy you enjoyed it!
I love her later sound
Yeah that's true. And also, with Joni's tunings I guess I shouldn't necessarily expect it to sound like a regular 12-string guitar anyway! Now that I'm listening to it with that in mind, some parts do actually sound like she is plucking two stings at a time that are tuned identically...do you hear that?
Thanks for the info! Doesn't really sound to me like there's a 12-string being played in the song, although I'm no guitar expert and could most certainly be wrong on that. And given her aptitude on the 6-string and dulcimer, it wouldn't surprise me if she did give a 12-string a try...
Its a 12 string. Open tuning to my ears.
I didn't notice either until you mentioned it...perhaps it's just used as a prop for the video? If anyone has any more info on this, please share!
magic...
