Joni Mitchell - Judgement Of The Moon And Stars (Ludwig's Tune) Lyrics

No tongue in the bell
And the fishwives yell
But they might as well be mute
So you get to keep the pictures
That don't seem like much
Cold white keys under your fingers
Now you're thinking
"That's no substitute
It just don't do it
Like the song of a warm warm body
Loving your touch"

In the court they carve your legend
With an apple in its jaw
And the women that you wanted
They get their laughs
Long silk stockings
On the bedposts of refinement
You're too raw
They think you're too raw
It's the judgement of the moon and stars
Your solitary path
Draw yourself a bath
Think what you'd like to have
For supper
Or take a walk
A park
A bridge
A tree
A river
Revoked but not yet cancelled
The gift goes on
In silence
In a bell jar
Still a song

You've got to shake your fists at lightning now
You've got to roar like forest fire
You've got to spread your light like blazes
All across the sky
They're going to aim the hoses on you
Show 'em you won't expire
Not till you burn up every passion
Not even when you die
Come on now
You've got to try
If you're feeling contempt
Well then you tell it
If you're tired of the silent night
Jesus well then you yell it
Condemned to wires and hammers
Strike every chord that you feel
That broken trees
And elephant ivories conceal

Joni Mitchell Judgement Of The Moon And Stars (Ludwig's Tune) Comments

Revoked but not yet cancelled, the gift goes on,
In silence, in a bell jar, still a song...

I'm 67 andI lost count of how many copies of For The Roses I wore out since '72. It is my favorite and most often played album; and together with Ladies of The Canyon and Blue becomes part of my perfect Joni Mitchell trifecta, much like three songs on For The Roses comprise a perfect trilogy that I revisit as often as I may [Lessons in Survival; Let The Wind Carry Me; For The Roses]

I've been in love with a woman I've never even met for abut as long as I care to remember or that really matters. Hard to beleive it's been more than 50 years since Song To a Seagull and she's now 75 herself. And, I'm still in love with Joni Mitchell and I always will be.

The album that hooked me, the piano so suits JM's depth and range-vocally, musically. OMG, who else has written, sung, played and arranged anything this good, ever, One RS reporter wrote that I forget who. The masterpiece, my fav along with the ever so subtle Night Ride Home. For the Roses may have gotten overlooked between Blue and Court and Spark---yet it is the one as much as Blue.......

  4. P.... K....

A big fan of Joni and Beethoven, two geniuses

there was a live version of this song on youtube once upon a time and it seemed like it was recorded in someone's home. I believe there was some banter in the beginning, but the most endearing thing to me was a screen door squeaking and slamming gently throughout the recording; the fact that this genius display of spirit was ... being processed so casually and naturally by her audience was something special that really struck a chord within.

if anyone has this recording or knows of its whereabouts, please let me know. I would be forever grateful to hear it again.

okay is this direct address or second person point of view though.....because she's singing a lot of "you's" but subtle. I'm thinking direct address here.

I have all of her shit

@Tim O' Flea I have always enjoyed reading this kind of comments it makes me understand and perhaps even shows me how it was before, I am young and hearing stories for me is a blessing, still I haven't found someone who makes me feel like Joni Mitchell and her music.

If you're tired of the silent night, Jesus well then you yell it.

Dream interview in Paradise: Glenn Gould interviews Joni Mitchell interviewing Glenn Gould. As filmed by Atom Egoyan. Or is he already booked to do the 'Gord Meets Gord Meeting God' interview [Lightfoot & Downie, kids]. Okay, then, we can get Guy Madden to do it. Damn, it great to be a Canadian - if you're willing to do the work.

    Autostade67 LOL, 'big time,' second-gen canadian-american♡♡

RE: the song 'For the Roses': The best ('popular') song about fame yet written; nothing compares (though 'Ludwig's Tune' - cannily on the same album - is a pretty good counterfoil). An underrated (yes, you heard me, UNDERRATED!) artist who deserves the canonization so freely handed out to her male contemporaries

My heart is full! Have you read those lyrics? No one, not anyone has it over Joni Mitchell. "If you’re tired of the silent night
Jesus, well then you yell it
    Condemned to wires and hammers
Strike every chord that you feel
    That broken trees
    And elephant ivories
    Conceal"
What is that about? Playing the piano and revealing who you are via your emotions and skills at playing. I saw her in person on her 71st birthday. 'Still robust, beautiful and still Joni.

This song gives me chills every time. She's one of the greatest lyricists of all time - all coupled with that amazing music! Genius!

  14. M.... T....

    A beautiful tribute to Beethoven

  15. N.... B....

I first knew this song from Joni's 2002 album "Travelogue" (30 years later with a posse of legendary musicians joining Joni in an orchestral remake of this 1972 original, with Vince Mendoza conducting). But this version is the pure seed material.
In 2007 the "For the Roses" album was chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

  16. r.... ....

I used Joni's lyrics to eulogize my brother's passing....another marginalized genius spirit...

  17. w.... ....

Invariably I find myself returning to this Song when the Soul needs to be brought cathartically back into the Light.

    w.... ....

    Me too. Like today.

  18. d.... ....

Best folk writer/singer, man or woman, of all time- and this is one of her most wonderful songs, about another genius.
