Jones, Grace - Send In The Clowns Lyrics

Isn't it rich? Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air,
Send in the clowns, send in the clowns,

Isn't it bliss? don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move,
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns,

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted,
Was yours,
Making my entrance again with my,
Usual flair,
Sure of my lines,
No one is there,

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear,
I thought that you'd want what I want,
Sorry my dear,
And where are the clowns?
Quick send in the clowns,
Don't bother, they're here,

Isn't it rich? isn't it queer?
Losing my timing this late,
In my career,
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns,
[?]
Send in the clowns. [x10]

Jones, Grace Send In The Clowns Comments

Love the arrangement! Horns are cool with a nice countermelody seemingly stuck in there.

Como me gustaba escuchar Portfolio cuando hacía mis tareas de universidad todas las noches, en especial esta canción, me recuerda tantas cosas vividas y perdidas.

  3. J.... V....

I 1st heard this in Quebec on senior trip in 1978 ! I was mesmerized by the drums and bass so I bought the LP which I still have. Nice relaxed disco groove nice to see and hear on youtube.

  4. d.... b....

She made this the same time John Gacy/ Pogo The Clown was killing people

  5. P.... F....

Love this version by Grace Jones. Not the usual track sang by her but this is in her early career when she was with Island Records. It's horses for courses whether you like her or not but being a fan of hers I'd support her all the way

  6. k.... c....

What a cool voice, stylized and funktastic. Awesome album!

  7. M.... C....

    I Have & i like this album vinyl !

  8. E.... G....

Me parece una interpretación muy particular y de gran nivel la escuché por primeta vez en 1979 y me gusta aún

The entire album, "Portfolio" was back then and is still today a very enjoyable album. I sometimes put it on and get on my rebounder for a nice half hour jog in place taking my original experiences with Grace Jones from the nighttime disco atmosphere
into this now daytime workout. A flood of memories come back thinking of the 70s, and before I know it my jogging is completed. 8/2018

When a goddess makes a mistake like this one it’s a public shitzer-pants. Whew!

  12. A.... D....

Great performance/vocals. Soulful version. First time I heard her version. Just excellent. Very 70's ish

  13. B.... U....

hard to pick a favorite grace song when you've got jams like THIS

  14. L.... B....

    She makes the 70's fun.

    L.... B....

    and the 80s !!

  15. G.... M....

    spectacular!

  16. F.... ....

taking into account this year's Evil Clown sightings, this song is pretty scary

    F.... ....

Brian The Bold and let's not forget to add the last presidential election completely from start to finish!

  17. C.... M....

The start sounds like Lean On Me by Mud ???

    C.... M....

    Bill Withers?

  18. M.... N....

So bad it's good. Grace as usual sings as flat as a pancake but somehow it works. No one else could get away with it!

    M.... N....

+knockshinnoch1950 "Flat as a pancake"?...get a new hearing aid granny!

    M.... N....

Let s just say the band is way better than the singer. I bought it for the bass and drums not the singing.

    M.... N....

@J VH So right, bass and drums are superb, the other instrumentation on all of Portfolio isn't shabby either.

  19. R.... R....

Grace's is a great singer. The fact that she can sing something other than Funk/Disco/Rock is a testament to her talent. This is the first track on the Portfolio album. When I bought thealbum, I was expecting to hear a waling disco diva version of this song, how surprised I was!

  20. D.... D....

    Wore this vinal out. {MOM DID}

  21. j.... u....

love it Grace, always have, always will

  22. A.... ....

Maybe her arranger is the one to be blamed. Also for beginning with some bars audibly taken from the "lean on me" intro, which thanks to that source are the best-sounding moments of the entire ... um ... patchwork.

  23. A.... ....

Crossovers can be thrilling, and Grace Jones sure is a gifted person, both with own songs and cover versions. But this one ... no! This surprisingly disappointing misuse of her voice sounds weak and boring. I'll rather switch to Sinatra, and then to her "Pull up to the bumper".

  24. M.... d....

this is so bad in terms of taste and so masterful at the same time.

    perfect song to cheer somebody up though.. ;

    M.... d....

I must say I would prefer this without the vocals.

  25. S.... ....

    Love it !
