Jones, George - The Race Is On Lyrics
I feel tears wellin' up cold and deep inside
Like my heart's sprung a big break
And the stab of loneliness, sharp and painful
That I may never shake
Now you might say that I was taking it hard
But don't you wager that I'll hide the sorrow
When I may break right down and bawl
Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are going to the inside
My tears are holding back
They're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
One day I had ventured in love, never once suspecting
What the final results would be
How I lived in fear of waking up each morning
And finding that you'd gone from me
There's aching and pain in my heart
For the day was the one that I hated to face
Somebody new came up to win her
And I came out in second place
Now the race is on and here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are going to the inside
My tears are holding back
They're trying not to fall
My heart's out of the running
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches
And the winner loses all

George Jones. "The Rolls Royce of country music".

They just don't write lyrics this clever anymore. That's what I've always liked and appreciated about older country: the lyrics were always just clever and told a good story.
I don’t think anyone will fill his shoes
I love this song it's so awesome
Jim carrey is the man !
Love playin possum as loud as my speakers will go.
Thanks to the Grateful Dead for introducing me to this song.
Whoever's singing harmony should get some credit, too. What a great sixties song this is!
THIS MAN DOESNT EVEN COMPARE TO HANKWILLIAMS ASS EATERS
who played the guitar solo
Someone needs to make a cartoon music video for this song with him driving his riding lawnmower, while drunk, to the liquor store
George Jones looks like jim Carey when he played in me myself and Irene
Gotta be a Fender Bass VI on the solo...
they asked johnny cash who his favorite singer was; johnny said, you mean after george jones?

My birthday 🤙🥳
Why do I feel like cooking up some moonshine?
I love this song but I could not help but ask why they put jim Carey on the photo for the song lol......😂🤣
George Jones ❤
George is the best. Willie, Waylon, and all those blokes wish they were as good as George Jones.
The lead part would have sounded much better and more complete had he used upstrokes and down strokes in his solo....using only the down stokes made the solo sound choppy..I'm used to hearing much better solos, as far a George goes..Perfect...I've listened to him since 1966 in Chicago with all the southerners that lived with us...
Classic!!!
George Jones ❤
Kelso Herston on bass guitar. Died of dementia.

I feel tears wellin' up cold and deep inside
Like my heart's sprung a big leak
And a stab of loneliness sharp and painful
That I may never shake
You might say that I was taking it hard
Since you wrote me off with a call
But don't you wager that I'll hide in sorrow
When I may lay right down and bawl
Now the race is on
And here comes pride in the backstretch
Heartaches goin' to the inside
My tears are holdin' back, they're tryin' not to fall
My hearts out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches

And how I lived in fear of waking up each morning
Thinking that you gone from me

Well the race is on
And here comes pride in the backstretch
Heartaches goin' to the inside
My tears are holdin' back, they're tryin' not to fall
My hearts out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake

That guitar solo sounds like a wet fish slopping about on the shore. 👍👌
So sad I didn’t get to see him with my son live...
I remember when The Race is On was released in the mid-1960s when I was attending Texas Tech in Lubbock. Each time it came on in the dorm, all the radios on the wing were cranked-up to full flume, the dorm rooms flew open and we all gave off a string of country/cowboy hollers. I think this was the first country country (and Western) song to actually jump the charts to also be a mega hit on the Pop-40 list. STILL great today and really takes me back.
George Sickler Great story!
George we miss ya
I can yodel
500 idiots thumbs down
Had no idea Sawyer Brown did this as a cover. He did it well though.
Dave Edmonds does a decent job with his version.
Love this song
Jim Carrey at his finest
Oh, Wow!!!! This came out in the 1960s while I was at Texas Tech in Lubbock, in the Men’s Carpenter Hall dorm. Each time it came on the radio, just about every radio on the wing was cranked up to full volume, the doors to the hallway swung open and we all sang along with “cowboy yells.”
If fading memory is still kinda correct, this was among the first if not THE FIRST Country (& Western, as we called ‘em) Songs to cross over and actually hit the pop music charts, with Cher, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, and many, many more, including Mantovani for the after-hours group.
My boyfriend just told me he doesnt know who George Jones is...hes now my EX boyfriend
