Jones, George - Color Of The Blues Lyrics

Up above me are the sky
Like the twinkle in your eyes
These things are the color of a blue.

In the mail your letter came
Sayin' you can take the looks the same?
Blue must be the color of the blues.

Bluebirds sitting in the tree
Seems to sypathize with me
For he's not singin' like he used to do.

The pretty waters in the sink
Feel as cold as you left me
Yes, blue must be the color of the blues.

There's a rainbow overhead
With more blue than gold and red
Blue must be the color angels chose.

A blue dress you proudly wore
When you left to return no more
Blue must be the color of the blues.

Blue days come and blue days go
How I feel nobody knows
Life is mighty empty without you.

There's a blue note in each song
That I sing since you're gone
Yes blue must be the color of the blues...

Whenever I bring up songs like Color of the Blue supposed, pretend George Jones fans don't know what I'm talking about. Never heard it. I prefer the 50s and 60s sruff.

  3. K.... D....

This is the best country song of all times in my opinion. The instrumentation is exactly what a gret country song should have with fiddle and pedal steel. The vocal though is what puts this song at the top of my list. An absolutely beautiful and emotional voice!!!

  4. R.... ....

This song is my favorite one of his early songs.

  5. M.... C....

This was my big brothers favorite George Jones song i wish he didn't hate me now we had some good times listening to this music

  6. S.... B....

I pulled out Shannon's notes. My the girl has a library on Country Music. She passed away at age 43, in her prime of life from the hospital killing her. I miss her more with each heartbeat. I love you my Shannon Marie Bear. God Bless and comfort you in his cradling arms. Your Denny. Jones and Lawton Williams wrote it. George doing it in grand style. Hal Rugg on this album on pedal steel.

  7. M.... B....

First song I can remember hearing him sing.

  14. E.... D....

He knows how to sing my pain.

  15. I.... H....

Back when country music was great! No matter how good it was it will always be great no matter whar! I ain't like all kids now these days I'm a 19 year old I was born with respect and grew up on old pickups and cars and classic country. They don't make good music and cars like they use too! America now is corrupt!

  16. M.... W....

How could anyone not like George he is one of the best''

    M.... W....

I used to hate Country many years ago. People change. I love it now. Same with jazz and opera. Love almost all music now. But George helped me through a heartbreak. Only Country really does that. Maybe blues.

  17. J.... D....

This is the music that caught my ear years & years ago, Jones at his best

  18. l.... A....

Saw him free at Gilly's in Texas once. The place is huge. I showed up early and no one had started selling tickets. They eventually did but did not clear out the room. Oh well. Thanks George.

    l.... A....

You must've been a skinny child :) Great story!

  19. N.... B....

Penned by both Lawton Williams —Born in Troy, West Tennessee, 1922 (b-day in 10 days, July 24th) best known for ‘My Farewell Party’ (made known by Gene Watson & Waylon Jennings)— and last but certainly not least, the greatest country singer in the history of humankind, the latest, the greatest; George Jones. Haha..
Legends, the both of em’...at least of TRUE country music history, that is.

  43. K.... g....

    love it.

  44. D.... O....

OK, I'm tracing this song back, after wondering about the roots of the Elvis Costello cover version. And the video clips asks me to buy the best of this guy, of whom I have never heard before. And you know what? I am going to do just that, because that performance was great. Greetings from a Brit.

    D.... O....

Hi David. Lots of great compilations. Here are a few I can recommend. The Bear Family recordings are beautifully remastered but are very expensive. For later down the road if you fall in love with the guy.

    D.... O....

The Costello cover of 'Brown to Blue' also is a George Jones song. Costello has a good feeling of what country is!

    D.... O....

You must know by now that you were in for a real treat!
Hope ya enjoyed George’s greatest, but little gems like this one sometimes don’t make the standard “greatest hits” albums, when it comes to old country I definitely suggest ya look around for a lost legend or 3 hiding out amongst the best sellers. With country there’s no better place to start than with George...the greatest.
Big ‘Ellooh from the sweltering jungles of Tennessee as well lol, not only does this country bumpkin absolutely love many of the English legends(Clapton-Zeppelin & all in between), but I’ve always felt a strong affinity for the British people & culture... my idea of “getting out of here”, as it were, would mean going to England to me. Cool place, Churchill, history, musical history..etc..
After all as Roger Miller (country great you’ve probably heard of) sang “England swings like a pendulum do, bobbies on bycicles 2 by 2...etc.” lol.
    Love to visit someday.

    D.... O....

Elvis worked with George Jones in the 80's when he did the Almost Blue album...he's big fan.

  45. M.... S....

The actual term for this music was 'Country and Western', I just call it Good!

  46. A.... T....

you are the best George Jones

  47. w.... ....

These early songs were Jones at his best, This one &  I'm Ragged but I'm Right were what made me a fan , The possum had a way with a song

  48. S.... K....

The legends are always better than the pop shit of today. This guy was clearly brilliant...

    S.... K....

    Absofuckenlutly ♡

    S.... K....

    Preach!!!!!!

  49. J.... J....

George Jones u sure knows how to touch someones heart like u have touch mines singing colour of the blues i believe in country music , it tells u everything about love n life and the way u sang it , u express every feelings with true emotions just as loretta lynn has done it "great music from the heart".

  50. P.... C....

Frank Sinatra called him the second best singer in America. I wonder who Frank thought was # 1 - I would say Frank might have been # 2. George is unmatched in emotive signing.Tony Bennett when asked who his 5 favorite singers were, he mentioned jazzers , opera singers and George Jones. When the interviewer asked incredulously "Jones?" Bennett said the man is an opera singer, he has a 3 octave range and suggested the interviewer must not have listened to him.A doctor I had to see was a music aficionado but when I mentioned Jones he said "yeah right", so I sent him links. Next time I saw him he said " what have I missed for the last 35 years".Music is an emotional language and very few can match Jones consistently. You also hear it in his band's playing, the weeping violins and pedal steel and the underrated bass playing in country which is its heartbeat.  This song is a gem.

    P.... C....

That was Lefty's contribution. I couldn't pick 5. Jones might be there, Vaughan for sure. Maybe Bott (Catherine), maybe Haggard, James Brown, maybe Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Amalia.... it starts to get too crowded up top. Great is great. On that mountaintop they're all equals.

    P.... C....

+dangervich - Music is so diverse an art form - I could not pick a top five. But watch Anita Oday at the Newport Jazz festival or Betty Carter live in Hamburg (93 I think)with Dave Holland Jack Dejohnette and Gerry Allen on youtube. There is no end to the talent out there. Why I love Jones though is the form (country music) is so simple. Without  bells and whistles  he singlehandedly drags the listener over with his delivery. The man can make me tear up while singing a lyric that if just read is actually corny. Better is word for sports. Unfortunately that mentality infects music (Grammy's). Certainly there are better  musicians but once you get to certain level different is the only categorical difference.

    P.... C....

Also true of Billie Holiday's version of PS, I Love You. No one's recorded it before or afterward. Why? Lousy lyric. But she could be the kind of person who'd say it. Same as George. Who's sung Why Baby Why? No one. Why? Not that great. But he fills it. Anyway, we're not gonna disagree on anything, is my sense! :)

    P.... C....

+dangervich an interesting article I read in a book about jazz was by a young upcoming jazz musician who landed his first job in a big band. The bandleader handed out the music and the young musician expressed great excitement at the number of songs they were going to do that had been done by Billie holiday. Within a week he realized they were lousy songs. He said it was then he realized her true genius she had altered melodies change keywords and made these otherwise paltry pop songs into masterpieces.you're right about cry baby cry I played in many a band myself and I once thought we'd try that song came to the same conclusion as you have. George's genius no point exposing my weaknesses.

    P.... C....

For sure! She (and he) could perform! "I burnt a hole in the dining room table. Now let me think. I guess that's all." You have to be that person to do a song that bad. And it works 'cause it's a normal person.

  51. B.... M....

    This is country.

  52. W.... H....

    iam subcribed

  53. 2.... 3....

George Jones didn't just have a great voice, he knew how to use it. On top of that he was a great song writer. Better even than the great Hank Williams. Then there was Jimmy Martin and I'd have to rank him up with George though it's oranges and apples if you know what I mean.

    2.... 3....

+Porter C You can't be serious. How can you get better than having to go out and pay people to mourn at your own funeral? Let's not compare the giants. They can be equally great. It certainly is apples and oranges. Don't forget Kristofferson. Here Comes That Rainbow unfolds from a single scene.

  54. m.... g....

I SAW HIM SEVERAL TIMES AND HE ALWAYS INTERACTED WITH THE AUDIENCE SO DOWN TO EARTH

    m.... g....

+mary gee You couldn't be luckier! I envy you.

    m.... g....

+mary gee And with his band too. Such camaraderie!

  55. K.... ....

George singing this song will always remind me of my mother-in-law who's gone on to heaven.  She sure could sing this pretty.....  thanks for the memories

  56. D.... S....

How could anyone dislike this? 5 people must be Luke Bryan fans.

    D.... S....

+Don Scott Actually they're white hating rappers.

    D.... S....

    Can't stand cRap...I mean Rap.

    D.... S....

+Don Scott I used to dislike Country. Also Jazz, also Opera. Then I came to like all music. I found GJ on YouTube: "She's Lonesome Again" converted me. Only thing I won't listen to is gansta rap. Because it's BS.

  57. P.... F....

  77. L.... R....

George jone will always be the best..

  78. D.... S....

George is the most "COUNTRY" of them all!--The best too..

  79. p.... ....

Haggard is above Cash IMO. I love Johnny but he's also Folk and Rockabilly, not straight, traditional Country.

  80. c.... ....

Tremendous song by an extraordinary singer

  81. d.... ....

Yeah, I'd add a couple more periods after the period... :) "The great is the enemy of the good." I love Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn too. Kris Kristofferson too.

    d.... ....

I got that wrong. "The best is the enemy of the good."

  82. T.... B....

    God bless George Jones

  83. d.... ....

    huh? No Merle Haggard?

  84. d.... ....

@Jas4u2 I'm glad that I was able to spread the word.

  85. d.... ....

Do not use swearwords on my posts please, not even with blanks and asterisks. I will remove and block.

  86. J.... W....

I just downloaded it from iTunes , thank you for sharing.

  87. d.... ....

@pgcb33 well, thanks, i've just posted a few to get people interested. i don't want to step on the copyright toes too much and i think they appreciate my annotations, asking people to buy the music. otherwise stuff gets thrown off pretty quick. some artists and their labels are smarter... they allow way more content and they get more record sales and more sellouts in shows.... alison krauss comes to mind for a sensible marketing plan. give and they'll give back.

  88. d.... ....

Do not post where you can get the audio for free here: All such notices will be deleted and all such posters will be blocked from all my videos: If you love the song buy it legally.

  89. d.... ....

@LTandDS Oh wait! It was Kris Kristoferson first... I forgot... I love Buck Owens and Hank Williams but have still to investigate Carl Smith (a guy I know who has 106 GJ LPs recommended him too) and the other guys... don't like the newer guys much though Jackson and Paisley are good on occasion as is, sometimes, Travis... I like Alison Krauss and Emmylou Harris. That's sure true about the heart and county...

  90. L.... ....

@dangervich That's another great song.....George seems to have an endless supply of them. Merle is great too. Nothing better for a broken heart than hurtin' country music. :)

Other early country artists who I LOVE include Webb Pierce, Buck Owens, Hank Williams Sr., Hank Locklin, Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Carl Smith.......just amazing stuff.

  91. d.... ....

@LTandDS For me it was a YouTube video (yup, that recent) or "She's Lonesome Again." I couldn't believe the vocal control. I'm a singer myself and listened to jazz all the time: Betty Carter, Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Joe Williams, Jimmy Rushing, Nat Cole - everybody... then my heart got broke and this is the balm for me I guess... I love Merle Haggard too.

  92. d.... ....

    @boudreauxjacques sorry jacques, no idea

  93. b.... ....

what is this fiddle player's name???

  94. d.... ....

@kodaxrose50 thanks too... love it when people call people hon.

  95. d.... ....

    @LTandDS I agree: It's a towering song. Thanks.

  96. T.... D....

@LTandDS - but your so young Grandpa?

  97. L.... ....

This is the song that got me into George about 25 years ago. Epic.

  98. D.... ....

    That's a sad 'un!!

  99. d.... ....

they didn't get better than this one... thanks for stoppin' by!
