Johnny Winter - Highway 61 Revisited Lyrics

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be putting me on"
God say, "No". Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killing done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61".

Well Georgia Sam he had a bloody nose
Welfare Department they wouldn't give him no clothes
He asked poor Howard where can I go
Howard said there's only one place I know
Sam said tell me quick man I got to run
Ol' Howard just pointed with his gun
And said that way down on Highway 61.

Well Mack the Finger said to Louie the King
I got forty red white and blue shoe strings
And a thousand telephones that don't ring
Do you know where I can get rid of these things
And Louie the King said let me think for a minute son
And he said yes I think it can be easily done
Just take everything down to Highway 61.

Now the fifth daughter on the twelfth night
Told the first father that things weren't right
My complexion she said is much too white
He said come here and step into the light he says hmm you're right
Let me tell the second mother this has been done
But the second mother was with the seventh son
And they were both out on Highway 61.

Now the rovin' gambler he was very bored
He was tryin' to create a next world war
He found a promoter who nearly fell off the floor
He said I never engaged in this kind of thing before
But yes I think it can be very easily done
We'll just put some bleachers out in the sun
And have it on Highway 61.

Johnny Winter Highway 61 Revisited Comments
  1. J.... F....

It’s criminal the way Johnny has been overlooked. Johnny could rock with the best. Look at all those pop acts inducted. A crime!

  2. c.... ....

It's in the blood with Johnny. Totally in his blood. I love the chord progression that starts around 6:58 how he drapes those chords like a translucent veil of sound.

  3. J.... K....

"We gotta get out of this place," Blue Oyster Cult; "Sweet Little Sixteen," Ten Years After (Live, at the Isle of Wight) Others?

  21. G.... E....

This is one of the greatests live blues rock guitarist numbers I have ever heard. There are a lot of guys out there and forget trying to pick a #1;2.3etc.They all have their place.just hope I have the good fortune to see the remaining few in my old age.And the young musicians coming up take your heart to where it leads.

    G.... E....

I saw him wipe the floor with Peter when Framton came alive lol

  41. W.... C....

Also a shout out to the drummer. He hung in on the bass drum for 10+ minutes. Johnny really shines at the end. Well sorry guys...the whole damn band is as good as it gets!!!

    W.... C....

    great endurance

  42. J.... G....

On top of all other comments, let's too remember this was LIVE!

  43. C.... C....

I got fan calls from prison when I used to play this on my student radio show back in the 80s.

  44. l.... a....

    UM VERDADEIRO MONSTRO.

  45. J.... F....

I remember hearing this on the radio when it came out in '76. I was 15 at the time and I didn't know who it was. I called the radio station and found out. I said then this guy is great and followed him ever since. Great album, thanks for posting!

  46. h.... ....

My favorite version of this song. The first time I heard this I couldn't believe how tight the band was and how absolutely on fire Johnny was. Along with SRV, Rory Gallagher,Robin Trower,Roy Buchannan and Frank Marino Johnny was among the greatest live guitarists.

  47. M.... H....

RIP Jonny, and thax for what you did.

  48. W.... P....

He is unbelievable on the slide but Rory Gallagher can match him. Together those 2 are the best there is.

    W.... P....

Sorry my friend.Rory is great, but it's like comparing silver with gold. No one touches Johnny Winter.....TJ STRUSKA

    W.... P....

    Sorry, Duane Allman........

    W.... P....

@Thomas Carpenter Yes but Rory was Irish.

    W.... P....

Michael La Morte All good sir! I just didn’t really listen to Rory much I was more of a Duane Allman Johnny Winter fan. No disrespect to Rory .....

    W.... P....

Thomas Carpenter Johnny is still my fav. He’s as mean as they get.

  49. R.... P....

Saw Johnny w Floyd Radford Whadda Amazing SHOW ... "78"

  50. T.... H....

Saw this live at Winterland inSan Francisco he opened for Ted Nugent

    T.... H....

That just sounds so funny......Guitar Monster Johnny Winter opening for a no talent shitstain.

  51. J.... ....

With all due respect to Derringer, Floyd Radford here was perhaps Johnny's Greatest foil. MASSIVE Live Album, among the best for me. Fortunately, got to see JW a few months before he passed, for like the 20th time.............at least

    J.... ....

on johnny winter and studio record derringer is untouchable

  52. E.... L....

    My husband's favorite song

  53. M.... ....

I agree with all the conversation around Johnny's slide playing- he had no equal. But on this particular track, when he swaps out guitars @ 6:50 and commences with the most blistering solo @7:45...omg!....where does that all come from? You just don't make this shit up. Incredible.

    M.... ....

MrKim2288 - absolutely amazing ! I finally got to see him live in 1988 - no words.

  54. R.... S....

The best JW lineup ever. It's a shame it only existed for such a short time. I prefer Floyd Radford over Rick Derringer any day of the week.

    R.... S....

    no way.

  55. A.... P....

The way Bobby D. intended it. No doubt. Classic!

  56. M.... S....

I like Johnny better than Jimi Hendrix. I know Johnny said, "Jimmy is way, way above any other guitartist;" but, he's way above me. Sometimes I'd be bored listening to him, then he'd come out with something brilliant, like, 'I didn't know anybody could get THAT out of the guitar!' But, Johnny keeps it exciting all the way through!

  57. S.... A....

Thanks to you Mike Sullivan from Richard Harrison!!☺

  58. D.... M....

I saw Johnny and his brother Edgar on stage together. in San Antonio in 1985 pure magic, rock as it was meant to be

  59. l.... a....

    MISERICÓRDIA, ESSE CARA TOCA DEMAIS.

  60. E.... M....

Great album have the CD and the LP rock and blues Only Johnny can do it this way

  61. J.... D....

    Super Maravilha..

  62. R.... M....

Johnny's early to mid 70s concerts stadium concerts were insane. People, you have no idea. People were absolutely freaked out.. I've been to probably 10 Johnny Winter concerts maybe more. People left these shows just absolutely shaking their heads. Listen to the crowds at the end of each one of these songs.

  63. z.... ....

9:51 Thrills all along my spine !

  64. S.... ....

Live at the 1976 Texas Barbecue!

  65. J.... J....

"Georgia Sam has a bloody nose", refers to Blind Willie Mctell from Thomson, Ga.(Statesboro Blues).

  66. S.... M....

I SAW JW 1973 IN STOCKHOLM SWEDEN... He Was incredible THE BEST SLIDEGUITAR PLAYER EVER...., I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ENYONE CAN LIKE STEVIE RAY WHEN THEY HAVE LISTEN TO JOHNNY WINTER & JIMI HENDRIX..? J W& J H. R.I.P.

    S.... M....

WHY CANT WE LIKE BOTH?....SRV WAS GREAT TOO

    S.... M....

Exactly. I was always saying,"If you mix Jimi with Johnny you get SRV. Right down to that dirty west Texas sound.

    S.... M....

    JW + JH = SRV

  67. N.... -....

johnny winter an immortal talented person

  68. P.... T....

dalam kesepakatan itu tertulis bahwa saya akan berjalan sendiri

  69. J.... R....

    in my opinion
not too many guitar players can play like he played. he was fuckin awesome. unless it's imagination few guitarists can play like Johnny did. I listened to him starting in 1971. I saw him in concert in 1975 at the boston music hall. yes let's just say I let the .music do .the do the talking
    how rip love ya johnny.

    J.... R....

He was the Shizzle Nizzle Brother😎👍🔥

  70. K.... ....

The riff at 8:17 knocks me out.

    K.... ....

    Koscina51 - Radford’s killer backup to Johnny’s 100 mph triplets - AWESOME !

    K.... ....

    so fast and clean

  71. u.... ....

    thumb pick master...

  72. J.... V....

my older sister had the" Johnny Winter and live "album ,I was just a little kid listening to it and it got me addicted to slide guitar. there's a lot of comments about who's the best slide guitar player ever. I think it's everyone's Style preference, look at Dwayne or Warren or Derrick ect,ect . the list goes on and on. how do you compare Dwayne to Johnny ,their styles are very different Duane's is just tasty and smooth and Johnny's is just like a freight train and a lightning bolt combined. but I will say I think Johnny's got the fastest fingers in the game

  73. W.... S....

In my humble opinion, the greatest attrocity in music is that this man has not been inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll hall of fame. But at the same time, hes to good for them!!!

    W.... S....

    @Michelle Ducharme 😄👍🔥

    W.... S....

Hall of Fame is so commercialized they aren't worthy of JW.

    W.... S....

I'm so afraid to look at the roster of who has been inducted....probably the likes of Brittany Spears and Lionel Ritchie et al . Being famous should not confirm eligibility to have your name in that book. I wonder if Tiny Tim is in that club ? Wouldn't it be funny/ironic if Santana is but not Greg Rolie ! I would not at all be surprised.

    W.... S....

    smh! unbelievable!

    W.... S....

    assolutamente corretto!

  74. c.... u....

got to see this tour at memorial what a show a baby faced kid looked all of 14 who l never found out was broke a string during his solo n never missed a lick old school at its finest

  75. N.... M....

Saw JW in London in the late 80s. I couldn't hear for three days after. Amazing gig.

  76. D.... ....

    Bad to the bone.

  77. t.... ....

Is there a video of this concert?

  78. l.... a....

    FANTASTICO.

    l.... a....

    softaculous

  79. M.... R....

    Sí delomejor

  80. C.... B....

High energy rock guitar at it's best...only by Johnny Winter...on par with Buck's Boogie by Blue Oyster Cult....ever wonder why no one else tries these?

  81. l.... a....

    Monstro, o melhor.

  82. W.... D....

Great Plenary fkN A+. .Gottam Man..

  83. J.... ....

    q petardo

  84. K.... J....

Love after the Amazing solo, when the band breaks down , and the absolutely unsung hero Floyd Radford comes in with his great solo, Johnny has strapped on the standard tuned firebird to just send us to pentatonic boogie heaven! Did he use the brown firebird for slide , and the white one for standard? Saw him in Australia in 85? He was aaaammmmmaaazzzziiinnng !!! Was using brown bird 🦅 then !!!

    K.... J....

Kevin James l always wondered who that guitarist was

    K.... J....

    What about Alvin Lee?

  85. J.... ....

2;45 oh my wat a stuffff

  86. M.... ....

Glad I got to see this great guitar player in Htown back in the early 80s.  Great stuff.  Saw his brother the other night with Alice Cooper and DP.  Edgar put on an awesome show.  Dedicated to his brother.

  87. b.... r....

I saw Johnny Winter with the group that played on the Captured Live album at the Long Beach Arena in the early 70's.  Floyd Redford was on rhythm and partial lead.  Johnny is the greatest slide and lead guitarist I've heard.  His music catches emotion, such as with Highway 61. His leads are smart, witty and well defined.  I can't believe that Rolling Stone had Prince as well as some other lousy guitarists rated well above Johnny in the "Greatest Guitarist Poll" of the 100 best.  This man was one of a kind and kicked ass on stage, you got more for your money when going to a Johnny Winter concert.

    b.... r....

I saw him in Australia in 85? Was fantastic, 3 piece band, he was using that little Hondo stienberger guitar, but when he strapped on the bird 🦅! Was damn godlike

    b.... r....

I always wonder what's going through those writers Minds when they picked the best guitar players. I think the first prerequisite they have probably from Rolling Stone magazine is they have to start with album sales to put them on the list. I've argued with my friends since I a kid that he's the best guitar player out there. but you never got the air play or record sales that his competitors got back in the 70s and 80s

    b.... r....

    I agree...!

  88. H.... G....

    INDISPENSABLE! WINTER at his Best!!

  89. S.... M....
