Johnny Mathis - When Sunny Gets Blue Lyrics

When Sunny gets blue,
Her eyes get gray and cloudy,
Then the rain begins to fall.
Pitter patter, pitter patter,
Love is gone, so what can matter?
No sweet lover man comes to call.

When Sunny gets blue,
She breathes a sigh of sadness,
Like the wind that stirs the trees.
Wind that sets the leaves to swayin', like some violins are playin'
Weird and haunting melodies.

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile.
That's how she got her name.
Since that sad affair, she's lost her smile, changed her style.
Somehow she's not the same.

But memories will fade,
And pretty dreams will rise up,
Where her other dreams fell through.
Hurry new love, hurry here,
To kiss away each lonely tear,
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue.

Hurry new love, hurry here,
To kiss away each lonely tear,
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue.

Johnny Mathis When Sunny Gets Blue Comments
  1. K.... G....

EVERY Mathis song is his best!!

  2. I.... A....

Johnny Mathis is my all time favorite singer and musical inspiration. This songs reminds me of my mom, and cold winter evenings or any evening night. Such a beautiful haunting song

  3. M.... ....

This music makes me feel nostalgic about a time and a place in history that I was not part of. Well, at least not in this current lifetime. 😏

  4. M.... S....

My first name is Sunny, and yup, my eyes go from green to gray when I'm upset. Who would have thought!

  5. B.... C....

My very favorite Mathis song. Also from his first years of popularity, but unfortunately the tune never seemed to make it big.

  6. D.... F....

Number 1 favorite song of mine. When I was in high school I wore out the grove. I met the lovely man in the early seventies and got to tell him how much I loved it.

  10. c.... g....

Fantastic music and the greatest singers.

  11. z.... ....

This is a great example of a singer making you think that what is merely a good song is really a great song. Blossom Dearie and Johnny Hartman could do that too. I guess most of the great ones from Sinatra on down could too, given the motivation and a good arrangement.

  12. I.... n....

Going through a transition after a 10 year marriage. She was always sunny in my mind but it wasnt so. I will keep her in my "...memories that fade."

    I.... n....

There are a lot of sad people that would be envious of your 10 years. Remember the good times while you start something new.

  13. M.... A....

""Hurry, new love, hurry here" - great lyric

  23. G.... H....

What juxtaposition!: a beautiful song by a great, talented singer, overlain with a vicious political ad.

  24. T.... S....

I've always loved this. My dad use to sing it among many other's of that era. I like to know if Johnny did a remake on this song with Deniece Williams? Seems like I was told this or read it somewhere. If so would you please present it here so that we may enjoy the beautiful vocals of the two again.Thank you very much.

  25. S.... W....

Johnny, along with Andy Williams, and Perry Como, are my fav singers.

  26. R.... S....

I love the voice of Johnny Mathis and his feeling of passion in his music which he brings to this song. Love you Johnny and may God always bless you and your gift.

  27. B.... C....

One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever. This should be a much more widely-recognized hit than it was.

  28. D.... X....

One of the most beautiful records ever made, by one of the greatest voices in music. What a perfect combination!!! We love you, Johnny!!! And would you believe that this is over SIXTY YEARS OLD???

  29. k.... ....

I think my mom owned every recording he did back in the 50's and this song was of course on one of them.

  30. T.... W....

This song always reminds me of my love that lost her battle with depression. Can't help but shed a tear and a smile for the loss and the memories each time I hear it. Best three years of my life...

  45. 1.... ....

Thanks for putting this up, David. I was born in '49 but this was the music my mother listened to; a woman who had never met a man of color, having only seen American black soldiers in WWII when she was a teenager.  So we grew up in a household devoid of racism listening to Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole, etc. And our values are those that she instilled in us. RIP mom and dad.
And damn, this song has such powerful lyrics!

1949clayton A beautiful sentiment for a beautiful song. I salute you and your family!

Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic cuz I grew up listening to Johnny, Andy Williams, Jack Jones & all the Motown soul music in the '60's. But that's ok, glad it was in the house for me to hear.

    Right! I second that!!

  64. R.... ....

For less than three minutes, everything was beautiful in the world!

  65. e.... ....

I was lucky enough to see him in concert (at Wolf Trap) a couple of years ago. It was amazing. His register is lower, but richer and still as smooth as cream.

This has always been my favorite version of the song. I'll probably replay it over and over.

  66. V.... K....

Smooth & breezy - this is a triumph of mellow blues-ish orchestration that makes you sigh. It is a story-song that sets you in a scenario where whatever the sadness . . . there is hope.

  67. J.... E....

  83. M.... B....

I introduced this song to my 14 year old daughter who fell in love with it... she is in high school choir and I wanted to introduce her to some really awesome music my parents introduced to me... and now she wants to learn these songs.... makes me happy that she has found such a love of such songs like this...

    M.... B....

I play in a local (St. Louis area) big band ensemble, and we play this song on occasion in the quartet. I'm an alternate bass player, and I do get quite a few of those gigs, since our regular bass player plays in multiple bands around the St. Louis area.

  84. f.... ....

this is called a velvet voice thanks

  85. w.... ....

OMG this sounds soooooo good. So much soul, so much passion, I can't keep from swaying when I hear it.

  86. S.... M....

This has to be one of his best performances and every time a hear it played on the radio, I think back to my Happy Days. When I was a young man I could imitate Johhny's voice so perfectly that many listeners thought it was the record player with one of his hits playing. I still have a great voice at 71 and I can croon with the best of the ballad singers even at my age. Thanks to Johhny Mathis, I have good memories to carry into old age along with his great music. The Centurion

    S.... M....

Cool! We have a young guy who sings with us in a local (St. Louis area) big band ensemble whom I swear sounds all the world like Frank Sinatra.

    S.... M....

Sal, I didn't know you to be a singer. But you darned sure know "best" when you experience it. "When Sunny Gets Blue" was and remains very special.

  87. M.... M....

There is no black singer today who can even be in the same sentence as this man.

    M.... M....

There were no white singers ever who could compare to him.

  88. T.... ....

@writerjmd Your comment intrigues me. Can you tell more? I love these songs and have often wondered about Mr. Mathis and how he is these days.

  89. d.... ....

@JubalCalif Glad you like it! best, david

  90. L.... A....

I have the same record. :D
